Amber

Amber sat at her desk, she'd just finished reading the report from Mya regarding the previous night. She appreciated the fact that Mya tried to be tactful in her descriptions. But Amber knew Sam, or rather, she knew of Sam. She heard everything, knew most of what happened in their small town, and had tabs on almost everyone. She would pin down the newcomer soon, evasive as he may be. She picked up the report and read it again:  The pompous ass, sorry, the subject entered the bar, had two beers, broke up a fight, tried to start one with me, and then asked about you. After I assured her I was more afraid of you than her she told me in no uncertain terms that we would see about that. The subject then left for a 'run'. I stayed with her until she retired for the night then I did the same after ensuring all security measures were in place. PS: Expect a visit from said ass. Amber laughed again. She did say tried to be tactful. Well if Miss Alpha wanted a meeting she could, like all the other clients, make an appointment, Amber would see if she had time, or the inclination to meet with Sam sooner or later. At the moment later would suit her just fine. She picked up the next report and read through all sixty before she took a break. Amber was glad that there were only minor issues to be sorted out and that most of those could and would be sorted out by her second, Ash. Ash knew her and also how she would handle most of them, and she felt more than comfortable leaving all the minor issues to her. But Sam, Sam she wanted to deal with herself. Miss Alpha would get nothing but the best from Amber Security. Amber would bet her company on the fact that Sam didn't even know who she was. They swam together at the gym, did yoga together in the park and they cycled together every Saturday. Sure they had never said more than a casual hello, but as Alpha, she would think that Sam knew who the owner of the company in charge of her safety was. But Sam never acknowledged her, never asked about her agents or said thank you. Not that she would. Everyone in town knew how the Alpha felt about the mere mortals of Amber Security, Amber thought. "Pompous ass was right." She mumbled and stood. Her phone rang just as she reached the door. "Shit." She turned and picked up the receiver. "Yes?"  "Sorry, I know it's break time, but I have the Alpha on line 1."  "Really?" Amber asked, a smile in her voice.  "Yes, and she insists on speaking with you." Amber could almost hear Ash's eyes roll. "You know, a second like me could never help the almighty Miss Alpha." Amber laughed.  "We really should call her Sam, one of these days a rookie is going to slip up and call her Miss Alpha." She sighed. "Put her through. But FYI, my schedule is booked solid all through this week."  "Of course! I will let Taylor at reception know."  "Thanks, Ash. And you go ahead and take our break alone today, I think I'm going to take the rest of the day off. You can handle everything for the rest of the day. Put Miss Al... Sam through." Amber sat down behind her desk and relaxed back in her chair. She took a deep breath and settled herself.  "Miss Rivers?" A throaty voice spoke into her ear. "Are you there?" "Yes, I'm here. What can I do for you, Alpha?" Sam felt a shiver run down her spine her wolf stirring from her deep slumber. "Alpha?" "Ah yes, I would like to make an appointment to see you, tomorrow, if possible." "I'm sorry, but my week is solidly booked. The soonest I can see you is next week Tuesday. And even then, I'm only available for half an hour or so." Amber could hear the irritation in Sam's voice when she answered.  "That's unacceptable, I am the Alpha and I have pressing business to discuss with you! You can't just push me aside, I am your most important client. Am I not?" Sam felt anger rise inside her. Who did this woman think she was? "What business would that be? Proving to my agents and your council that my employees are not fit to protect you? " Amber took a deep breath. Reigning in her building frustration.  "I merely want the chance to talk to you about something your agent said to me. I want to make you a proposition. And maybe in the process of doing that, I will prove a point that I have been trying to make for a while now?"  "Let me ask you this?" Amber sat forward and leaned her head in her hands. "Why do you think we are not capable?" "I..." "I'm not done. For centuries now we have been in charge of the safety of this town and its leaders. Centuries Alpha. We fought wars alongside your father. Lost men and women, just like your pack. Have given our lives to protect a woman, who from the time she could talk, looked down on us. You have humans in your pack. Why is it that only the people trained and dedicated to protecting you, get treated like s**t?" The silence stretched for a full minute.  "Am I allowed to speak now?" Sam asked.  "Sure." "Well, honestly, if you were capable of doing your job, then maybe those wars would not have cost us so many wolves. How many of those wolves were protecting the humans fighting alongside them?" Sam sighed. "I don't want to have this argument over the phone. Maybe if we sit and discuss this rationally we can get on more common ground." "Fine. Tomorrow morning, seven. We can discuss it over a cup of coffee after yoga." "Yoga?" Sam asked surprised.  "Yes, the class in the park that we have been going to since it started." Amber stood. "Goodbye Alpha." "Wait..." But the only answer she got was the dial tone. Who the f**k was this woman?
