Chapter 7 When they had awakened the next morning, there was little chance to talk. They had taken time to hold each other and reiterate their love. Nathaniel knew he had to be on his way, lest he put Jonathan in jeopardy if he were to be discovered at the school. They spoke briefly while they dressed and then took leave of each other with a tender kiss. As Nathaniel walked back toward town and the wharf, he thought about the impossible situation they found themselves in. Puritan law was harsh enough in the lives of those who had ordinary appetites and desires. It was cruel to the extreme to those who had any proclivities such as those Jonathan and Nathaniel shared. What a shock it must have been, Nathaniel thought, as he walked toward the cooperage in the mist of that October morning,
