The prom night went great, and it was a great change, after Zeenia's stint in the hospital, and then the exams. Nothing unusual happened after the prom night.
It was time now for her to leave, her protected nest, her home. Her parents were satisfied, thinking that her hospitalization was just a freak accident, they thus sanctioned her freedom to become an adult, and move out.
Zeenia now had to complete her internship at the lawyers firm, where she had been selected, based on her grades. Besides her, two other girls from all over Canada were chosen to work there. She was waiting anxiously for the final call. She was a bit apprehensive, suppose they would come to know that she had been admitted to a Psychiatric hospital some time back. She would in that case not receive the final call.
Zeenia had decided to move to the rented flat with Tina. She had packed her clothes, and boxes containing things her mother said she needed. She then shifted out of her parent's place, to the rented flat she was now sharing with Tina.
Finally, Zeenia received a call from someone who had a very compelling voice. That person did not say much, except that "Ms. Zeenia Steven, you have been selected as an assistant to Adv. Theodore Jackson. You will receive your instructions very soon by email. Please read all the instructions in the mail. Goodbye."
Now her worry was that she was not smart enough, would she be able to handle the job. Very soon she received the email. She was overjoyed.
But then the job was not worrying Zeenia, it was sitting and working in the same room as Adv. Theodore Jackson. She rushed over to the closet to decide what to wear. She had nothing impressive, and she did not want to wear the same dress, which she had worn for the interview. Finally, she selected black trousers and a white shirt.
It had been a week at the office, and Zeenia had not met her boss Theodore. The girls were being given training, in the meantime.
Adv. Theodore Jackson made an appearance while a PowerPoint presentation was going on by a presenter. They all noticed that the presenter was giving a nervous smile to somebody at the back of the room. They all turned to look behind in the partial dim-lit room. A tall young man with a well developed muscular body was leaning against the door. His dark hair was a contrast to his pale but white skin.
His dark hair and blue eyes seemed as if they were taking in all the young women present in the room. He had a sexy smile that Zeenia had noticed. He was very handsome. But then his eyes rested on her, and she noticed that it was not a warm expression. When his eyes locked hers, he gave her a cold hard look.
Zeenia's thought was that he looked too young, to be a reputed and experienced Advocate, which he actually was.
After the presentation, was a long session of question and answers. Finally, the announcement was made that, our assignments, as well as duty hours, would be sent to our email accounts. We were instructed to check our mails. "Also check for your work timings" the presenter announced. "Some of you would be working late. So do make your travel arrangements accordingly. If you'll do not have car's then make arrangements with your car service, otherwise, you'll be replaced with someone else."
Zeenia raised her hand and asked her how much late? The presenter replied that she was not aware that, Zeenia could not work late. She would otherwise have selected someone else. She said that "You were selected, by the boss personally."
Zeenia replied that it was not a problem, she said she was asking so as to inform her roommate, that she would be late.
When Zeenia walked out of the conference hall into the light, her eyes settled on the handsome Advocate, standing at his office door. His cold stare seemed to unsettle her. He did not utter a word, but his eyes kept on following her. She was wondering where she had seen those eyes before? While she questioned herself, she was feeling nervous. The girls had been dismissed for the day, to go home and come back tomorrow. With her head lowered Zeenia passed by her boss. She felt his gaze wandering from her face, hair, chest, and then her legs. She felt like he had an X-Ray machine in his eyes, and she had passed through that machine.
Outside on the street, it was dark. Zeenia called up for an Uber cab, and within some time she reached safely at her flat.
After six months
When Zeenia Steven told people, that she had joined as an assistant to Advocate Theodore Jackson, in his firm Jackson and associates, their reaction used to be raised eyebrows, with eyes full of respect. But then people used to also have words of deep sympathy for her. People kept on asking her, you are just nineteen, poor you. They would ask her, what is it like, working for Theodore Jackson? Is it true that he is a complete bastard?
Zeenia found it hard to believe them. She wanted to find the b***h who had labeled Theodore as a woman-hater and slap her hard. She was an absolute loyalist. She didn't find it hard working for Theodore. She found it exciting, stimulating, challenging, and probably at times exhausting. On days like today, she thought that she deserved a pay raise.
She lifted her chin to look up into the gorgeous face of the men, whose expression was probably carved from solid rock. He was very tall. He was about six feet four in height. He was dressed in a tailor-made wool suit. The jacket hugged him, revealing the shape of his wide shoulders. He was wearing dark glasses, behind which his eyes were deep blue, like the blue sea. Right now those blue eyes were staring unblinkingly into hers. Zeenia felt as if he could see right into her soul. While she used to shiver with a curious charge.
Zeenia had been working with him for the last six months. She told herself that she should be used to it by now. But instead of getting better, the sensation had been worsening.
Zeenia never ever lied to herself. She knew deep down, that the reason Theodore drove her crazy most of the time was that, in spite of her giving a stern talking to herself, deep down she adored him. But Zeenia could not understand why, Theodore not only intimidated her but he sort of scared her. Zeenia had never been afraid of anyone. Her parents especially her mother had always taught her, that women were equal. Her father had taught her to ignore gender, race, color. He had taught her to treat everyone with respect.
Zeenia knew one thing for sure, and that was Theodore's faith in her capabilities when she was hired by him. She had just finished high school and was planning to search for a job when she met Theodore at the school campus. He had turned up at an event in the school, as he was on the school board of trustees. The rest as they say is history. She had been handpicked by him for an internship, at his firm.
