She was going to do it.
Mae trembled as she held the stake above her head. She stared down at the vampire and lost her nerve. She couldn't do this.
No. She had to. Everyone counted on her to kill the evil vampire who's terrorized and killed a lot of werewolves. He was evil. He didn't deserve to live.
She had to do this. She closed her eyes and started to count. Her thighs braced around his chest as she balanced herself.
One, two, three… four...now. She brought the stake down, but made the mistake of looking down. He was staring at her. His red eyes were blazing with rage. He moved so fast, pushing her off him. Mae fell to the bed, and gasped as he lay on top of her, wrenching the stake out of her hand. He threw it across the room.
Mae heard it hit the wall with a thud, the sound echoing all around them. She stared up at him shaking. Was he going to kill her? He looked angry enough to kill her. His gleaming fangs touched his bottom lip, ready to bite into her. Mae opened her mouth to say something, but he started to touch her. His hands caressed her skin as he ripped through her clothes with his claws.
"No." Mae gasped out as she lay naked in front of him. "Get off me!"
"You were on top of me first," he said. He stared down at her, his eyes crawled over her skin. Her n*****s tightened, causing her p***y to spasm. She was getting turned on.
"No." She tried to shove him off.
But he didn't move. His lips grazed her neck, he was going to bite her, Mae thought, fear coursing through his veins.
“No one ever told you not to wake up a sleeping vampire?” he growled out, as his fangs prickled her skin. Mae gasped as lust slammed into her. “I guess you didn't know that. Or wouldn't have tried to kill me. So they sent you in to kill me. I should drink dry.”
“Please, no. I…”
He leaned close. Mae gasped as she came to.
Where am I? She blinked rapidly, gasping for air. For a moment she thought she was back there....with him...with the vicious vampire who was her mate.
No.
She looked around her, at the room and its bright decorations. She was safe. She hated it when the memories of that time just drifted into her mind, scaring her. She sighed as she shoved them away.
She was safe, she told herself again. She was with her sister and her fairy king mate. The vampire won't hurt her again.
Mae stared down at the sleeping baby in the crib. He was wrapped in white fluffy blankets that made him look like he was drifting on a cloud. A soft light illuminated the baby room, creating a calming atmosphere. Mae sighed as she stared at her nephew. He was a beautiful little thing. Kalan and Mystic really created something special. Mae touched his cheek softly. His white hair made him look like he had a halo on top of his head.
She heard the door to the room open, and Mystic walked inside.
“He looks like an angel,” she said caressing his soft cheek as her sister came to stand next to her. Mystic beamed at her like the proud mother she was.
“He’s the spitting image of his father,” she said looking lovingly at the baby. Yes, he was, Mae thought. “You don’t have to check on him all the time, you know?” Mystic said after a beat. She touched her back in a soothing touch.
Mae knew that. But she liked looking at the baby. He was so precious, and innocent in a way that she once was. Sometimes she wished she could go back there – even though their time in Lanarrie’s house were tough but they were the only good memories she had.
She wanted that Mae back. But she was gone, no matter how hard she tried to hold on to her. She blinked away the tears that suddenly filled her eyes.
She gave Mystic a nod, and remained standing where she was. Mystic stared at her for a few seconds, and then sighed as she continued to stand there. She moved around the room, doing whatever it was that she came to do. After a few minutes she came to stand next to her again. Mae felt her concerned stare, but didn’t look up. She’d been looking at her like that for months now. And Mae hated it. It made her feel abnormal. Maybe she was. She sighed, and turned to her sister.
“It’s late. I should go and rest,” Mae said giving her sister’s hand a squeeze.
“Mae?” Mystic begun, but Mae shook her head.
“I’m fine,” she said forcing a smile to her lips. She been smiling and laughing even though she didn’t feel any joy in her heart. She wondered if she would ever feel joy again – be innocent and care free.
She touched her chest as she made her way out of her room. She closed the door behind her and leaned against it. A tear trickled down her face.
She quickly wiped it away and walked down the hallway to her own room. She entered the room, and closed the door behind her.
“It’s late. I should go and rest.” The words she said to Mystic ran in her mind. She didn’t exactly lie to her sister about resting. But for her it wasn’t that simple.
Maybe tonight she will sleep. She thought as she stared at the bed as if it was her biggest enemy. The white sheets and fluffy pillows were inviting. She should lie down and close her eyes. It wasn’t that hard.
Mae turned away from the bed, and made her way to the bathroom. She pulled her clothes off and stepped into the shower. She turned the taps on and stood there for a few minutes before she scrubbed her body clean. It felt good to do this on her own. Memories of her past flooded her mind and she pushed them away. She quickly stepped out of the shower, and almost slipped on the tiled floor in her rush.
A startled whimper slipped out of her lips, as she righted herself. Water dripped on the floor making another memory flash in her mind.
Fuck, she hated this. It felt like she was caught between the past and the present. She wondered if there was a way to erase her memories, and start anew.
God, she wanted that…Mae thought gritting her teeth as her heart squeezed from the ache that seemed to be permanently etched into her.
She reached for a towel and used it to dry her body. She went back into the bedroom, and went through her closet. She stared at the clothes that Jade bought for her. The closet was close to bursting with colorful clothes.
They were so many.
She wondered when did he think she would wear them all. Mae smiled at the thought of Jade. He was sweet, and he didn’t treat her with kid gloves the way her sister and Kalan were doing. He saw her as she was. And Mae liked him for it.
She reached for sweat pants and a matching top, and put them on. She made her way to the bed, and forced herself to lie down. She closed her eyes and counted to ten. Sleeping was becoming hard to do, especially now that the vampire was in the house. She could feel him breathe. His heavy presence followed her everywhere like he was forcing her to acknowledge him, to know that he was there… and she couldn’t get away from him even if she tried. Mae sighed and turned to her side.
Her exhausted body sank into the mattress.
Just this once let me sleep, she begged him tiredly, even though he couldn't hear her. She was tired of him calling her to him. She has endured nine months of him dragging her to some room in her dreams, though Mae wouldn’t call it a dream because she was aware of her body and everything else around her. It was more like he pulled her into an alternative universe. She didn’t even know if those even existed. But he somehow managed to do it. As soon as she fell asleep he dragged her to this room, where his coffin was. She knew it belonged to him even though she hadn’t been there when Oren and the guards carried them into the basement. She hadn’t wanted to be there, because she knew what seeing him did to her. But it seemed he was going to force her to see him. He was going to make her acknowledge him even though she didn’t want to.
But by some miracle she always woke up before she could see him rise from the coffin.
Mae was grateful for that. But she knew that one day she won’t wake up. She won't be able to escape him. And that scared her. It made her avoid sleep by all means necessary. For nine months, she hardly slept afraid of what might happen.
But tonight she was too tired to not sleep.
She groaned as she pulled the covers close to her chin. Her heavy lips flatter as she felt the heaviness of sleep drag her mind into oblivion. And then…
The door to the room opened as if he’d been waiting for her to fall asleep. Mae gasped as she stared at the coffin in the middle of the room. It was where it had always been every time he dragged her there. The wood of the coffin glistened from the light of the candles that were set few paces from it. She looked around the room. Ceiling to floor windows took up one side of the room, and black curtains were hung on the window, creating a somber atmosphere that reminded her so much of the room he'd been kept in at the vampire's next. All that was missing was the massive bed. But there was nothing else in the room except the coffin. Mae felt his presence in the room heavy and oppressive. It tugged at her senses, her memories.
She stood just inside the door, waiting to wake up. She always woke up at this point, but she felt something pull at her. Mae screamed as she was pulled into the room by an invisible force. Mae tried to resist, but it was strong. She saw herself glide across the floor to come to a stop in the middle of the room.
Oh no, she said fighting to pull herself free. Please wake up…please wake up, she begged herself. But she couldn’t wake up. The coffin groaned as the lid slid open.
Mae screamed.
She gasped as her eyes flew open. She quickly sat up, and bend over at the waist trying to catch her breath. After a few minutes she could breathe normally. She got out of bed unable to stay in it any longer. She walked to the large window and stared outside at the dark forest. She could see fireflies flying all around the forest. The fairy kingdom was so amazing – it was enchanted and breathtaking. She wished she and Mystic had come here when Kalan asked her. But fate had other ideas.
Mae bit the inside of her mouth until she tasted blood. She pushed away from the window and made her way out of the room. She made her way to the garden. She pushed through the door, and took a deep breath. The garden always managed to calm her down when she felt like she was coming out of her skin. She walked around the garden, touching the flowers and plucking some to stick into her hair. She smiled a little as memories of her and Mystic playing in the meadow flooded her mind.
I can’t go back in time, she thought as she continued to walk around. She came to a bench and sat.
“You can’t sleep?”
Mae turned to find Jade standing a few paces from her. Her smile grew a little wider.
“I should be asking you,” she said. Jade came to the bench and sat down next to her.
“No, actually. I noticed that you’ve been spending your nights in her and I felt…” he shrugged looking anywhere but at her. “I thought you might need some company or I don’t know ...want to talk about whatever is bothering you.” The last part was said so softly Mae wasn’t sure he meant for her to hear it. She grimaced. “Or not,” Jade said staring at her awkwardly.
“How did you notice that I wasn’t sleeping? I thought the servant’s rooms are all the way on the other side of the house,” she asked avoiding the subject.
“They are,” Jade said with a sigh. “I saw you here, because I couldn’t sleep too and I love walking around the garden at night. That’s when the magical creatures come out.”
Mae looked around her. “Magical creatures? I haven’t seen any.”
Jade laughed. “You look like a zombie whenever you’re walking around the garden. I doubt you would have noticed even if they came and sat on your shoulder,” he said and then sobered up. He stared at her with assessing eyes that made her nervous. “Okay, I’ll start. I can’t sleep because I keep seeing the vampire attack. I managed to hide, but I can still hear the other servants’ screams as they were bitten to death. Shot of finding some magical pill to help me sleep, I am stuck to wonder this beautiful place. Or obsess over what happened. And the fact that there are two vampires sleeping in the basement as we speak. doesn’t help, especially that other one – Vicker.”
Mae jerked at the mention of his name. Jade nodded as he noticed.
“He’s scary, isn’t he?” He closed his eyes and shivered. “While I was hiding the other vampires talked about him as they searched for more of us. They called him a demon, and laughed as if that was funny.” Jade shook his head. Mae bit the inside of her cheek as she remembered what he’d just put her through. He dragged her into that room, maybe he was a demon. How did he even do that? Was it because they were linked that he could easily connect wit her?
Mae didnt know.
“I don’t understand why the king allowed him and his brother back into the house.”
Mae froze. She knew why Kalan was doing it. He was doing it for her. To give her time to come to terms with the fact that she was…she shook her head. She couldn’t even bring herself to say it in her own mind. She stared at Jade. He looked shaken by the fact that the vampires were in the house. Mae felt guilty.
“He did it for me,” the words jumped out of her mouth before she could think about it.
“What?” he asked his eyes going wide.
“It’s complicated,” Mae said pulling air through her teeth. It was worse than complicated. It was…she couldn’t even think of a word to explain it.
“Complicated?” Jade asked. His eyes landed on her and they narrowed as if they were assessing her. He looked down at his hands, and she thought that he wasn’t going to say anything. But he lifted his head, and took her hand. “I hope it’s not what I’m thinking,” he said.
“I don’t know what you’re thinking,” Mae laughed out loud. Jade did too. His fingers tightened around hers, stopping her laughter. She knew what he was silently asking her. “I…”
“Is he your…”
“Unfortunately,” Mae interrupted him. She took a deep breath feeling like she was drowning. She looked around her, because the garden beauty of the garden washed away the darkness that tended to linger in her mind whenever she thought of him.
“And this?” Jade asked touching the spot where her mating mark was over the sweater. She wondered when Jade had noticed it. She tried her best to conceal it with clothes, because Mystic tended to stare at it and look sad as she looked away. “I thought…” he trailed off as if he couldn’t find the words to say.
Mae sucked her lips into her mouth, and held her breath. Jade waited for her to say something, but she didn’t know where to begin. She pulled her hand from his, getting to her feet, but he held on. And pulled her down.
“No, don't run. You have to give me something. You can’t go silent after saying something like that. I swear I won’t able to sleep after this if you don’t tell me what is going on,” Jade said. He stared at Mae waiting for her to say something. Mae opened her mouth and closed it. “Start from the beginning,” he encouraged her, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze.
Mae smiled slightly. He was really trying hard to comfort her. “My sister and I are kind of orphans. We found ourselves living with a fairy called Mason after we ha to leave another family. He was a seer with great power. He took us in and lived with us…” Mae said. She felt a little lighter as started to speak.
