2 “Was he your mate?”

1830 Words
….But living him wasn’t easy. We didn’t have much, and we moved a lot. Mystic was angry all the time, because of what happened between her and Kalan. She was moody and hardly spent time with me like she used to. I had to deal with a lot on my own. I had to learn not to be scared off my nightmares. To ignore the monster that visited my dreams every night because my sister wasn’t there to hold my hand. I turned into my wolf form for the first time alone. I was so happy, but I couldn’t share that moment with her because she was sad, and I kind of irritated her a bit at that time with my need for attention. Not that I blame her for what happened I after I left her and Mason. She was only trying to cope with what happened to her. She felt like her mate betrayed her, and to an extend I understood. She was hurting. And she didn’t trust me to help her through her pain. She spent all her days searching for ways to remove her mating mark. She asked Mason questions incessantly about how to do it. And Mason refused to answer her. They fought a lot. It was unbearable to live with them. The day I left, I woke up in the morning and went into the forest. That was a habit of mine. I would take off and give myself to my wolf. And Nayla understood what I needed. She would just run for hours so that I could avoid Mystic’s sad face or their arguments. For hours I would be free. And it was perfect because this time we lived not far from a human town in a cabin that Mason somehow found. Mason refused to take us to a pack no matter how much I begged him. He was paranoid about living elsewhere but in hiding. The cabin was nice though. It was old and looked abandoned. And it had a thick forest at the back of it that my wolf would get lost in. I liked it there. It was peaceful in the forest and I actually had a place to go, and didn’t have to endure their loud shouting matches. I returned home that day, after running for hours. And they were fighting again. I stood at the edge of the forest. And stared at the human town, just a few pace away, wishing I was somewhere else than there. I wanted something different for myself. Something that could bring back the joy and laughter I had once had. And I knew I wouldn’t get it if I stayed with Mystic. She was broken, and she needed her mate to fix her. But I knew she will never go back to Lanarrie in order to find Kalan. She walked away from her mate and just like that. She didn't even bother to try to understand what happened between him and Aria. That b***h… if there was anyone I hated with all my heart it was Aria. And I blamed her for everything that happened to us. If it wasn’t for her Mystic would have been with Kalan, and we would have come here a long time ago. But I guess fate had other ideas. And it was urging me to take my first step towards my happiness. I didn’t even know where I would find it. But it wasn’t there. I looked back at the cabin. Mystic was crying by then. The sound of her sobs worked through my body, and squeezed my heart. I couldn’t stand her tears anymore. It was too much. I looked back at the human town and took my first step, away from my sister. My heart hammered so hard in my chest as the distance between me and the cabin increased. Nayla whimpered inside me because we were leaving her sister behind. But she understood that I couldn’t stay there. I had to find my own way. I made my way back into the forest. I changed back into my wolf and ran for days. By the time Nayla stopped she was so exhausted she could barely move. She dropped to the forest floor, gasping for air. She had pushed herself so hard because she was trying to get me away from what was hurting me. I changed back to my human form, to give her a moment to rest. But to this day I regret allowing my emotions to rule me, because I was too tired to sense the three rogues that had followed me. They appeared out of nowhere. They looked vicious and out of their minds with bloodlust as they circled around me. Their growls filled the silence rough and scary. Their claws ripped through the ground as they moved towards me, getting closer. Fear froze me in place and I watched them unable to move or think of what to do. Nayla pushed through me taking over my body as the need to protect me overwhelmed her. She staggered to her feet, pushing away her exhaustion. She snarled at them moving in a circle as she kept each rogue in her sight. She was acting all brave and strong. But I knew she couldn’t fight all of them at once. “No, you have to run,” I said deep inside her. But she shook her head, pushing me deeper inside her. “If we die, we die fighting,” she told me as she crotched low, and waited for the rogues to attack first. The whole forest fell silent as anticipation went through her. The rogues didn’t attack. They stopped suddenly. Their ears moved as if they caught something that Nayla couldn’t hear. One of them turned around to look around the forest. Time seemed to stop, as he stared into the distance. Nayla sniffed the air, but she caught nothing. Satisfied that there was nothing there, the rogue turned to toward Nayla. He bared his teeth and came at her. Nayla jumped out of his way, but the other rogues slammed into her. She dropped to the ground with a hard thud, I felt deep inside her. She lay on the ground for a few minutes, and then she stumbled to her feet shaking off the pain and exhaustion that radiated through her. But it was too late. The rogues were already coming down on her….” Jade’s fingers squeezed her hand. “It’s alright. You don’t have to tell me if it’s hard for you.” Mae smiled at him. He was so kind. She never met anyone who cared about her feelings. Mystic used to, but then…Mae shook her head. She didn’t blame her sister. So much has happened to them. “It's fine. That wasn’t the worst thing, that’s ever happened to me. And besides, that’s when he came to me…” she said pointing to the mating mark. “He saved you,” Jade asked in excitement. Mae nodded. “He appeared out of nowhere. Well now that I think of it, he didn’t exactly appear out of nowhere. I guess the rogues sensed his presence nearby. But to me it was like he appeared out of nowhere. His fearsome growl filled the silence before he appeared himself. The rogues jumped off Nayla as a flash of white came barreling down on them. The white wolf was massive, and lethal. He moved like the wind as he went through them like they were nothing. Blood splattered everywhere, painting his coat red. He was strong and formidable. Nayla stared at him impressed and wary at the same time. She’d never seen such viciousness and brutality from another wolf. Since I was young when we left our pack, I didn’t know how an alpha could be. The white wolf killed off the rogues and turned to Nayla. She staggered to her feet as he came closer. Deep inside her, I stared at him with awe and a deep yearning in my that I changed into my human form right there before him. I couldn’t help it. He was so amazing. “Thank you,” I said. He stepped closer to me and licked my face. “And then what happened,” Jade asked. “I fainted.” “Was he your mate?” Mae nodded. “But I didn’t feel it when we first met.” Jade narrowed his eyes as he stared at her. “Why not? Don’t werewolves sense their mates the first time they meet them?” “They do. But I guess some don’t, because I didn’t sense he was my mate at first. It only happened the next day when I woke up in his pack house. The minute I opened my eyes and I saw him I knew that he was my mate,” Mae said. She yawned and rubbed her eyes. Jade got to his feet, and offered her his hand. “What?” “It’s time to go to sleep,” he said. Mae was about to refuse when he shook his head. “I’ve watched you for the past months in this garden and this is the first time you yawned and rubbed your eyes because you can’t keep them open anymore. Let’s go to sleep, you need to rest.” He pulled her to her feet and walked out of the garden. They made their way to her room. The house was silent and peaceful. Mae yawned again as they came to a stop in front of her room. “To be continued,” Jade said. “I hope talking about it help you reduce the load on your shoulders.” “It did,” Mae said. She opened the door, and walked into her room. “Goodnight, Jade.” “Goodnight,” he said and walked back down the hallway. Mae closed the door. She walked to the large window avoiding the bed. Maybe the vampire won’t bother you again tonight, she said silently to herself. But she didn’t trust that he wouldn’t try to drag her back into that room. Mae sighed. She turned away from the window, and dragged the only chair in the room in front of the window. Mae sat down and stared out of the window. The sky was lighting up, the sun will be rising soon. Another day will come and go, and she will be stuck between the vampire and her werewolf mate. Mae touched the mating mark as she thought of Larson. Where are you? She asked herself. There was one person who knew where he was, and what happened to him. Vicker…and there was no way she was going to ask him. Mae closed her eyes as tears ran down her cheek. She wiped them away as her thought shifted to the moment she woke up in his pack. And he was right there…staring down at her…
