She was surprised to hear from him but texted him back.
No, it's cool. Hey!
Her phone chimed shortly after her reply. So, I was thinking about you after the party since you left so soon. Would you want to get some pizza with me today? He asked.
He must have been somewhere else when the whole ordeal with James happened. Nora was relieved. At least one person didn't see her be humiliated. Normally, she wouldn't be interested in going out with a guy she hardly knew, but this time she felt like she needed a distraction from everything that was happening to her. Besides, why shouldn't she go out and have some fun? It's time to break out of her shell, Nora decided.
I would love to... She replied.
After a couple of minutes, she heard another chime.
Sweet! Meet me at Pizza Bella at 6? Mason texted.
That sounds great. She quickly replied.
Nora put her phone down and thought about what she was going to wear. She wondered if this was a date and hoped Mason wasn't trying to pull a mean trick on her. Growing up as an outcast and being ridiculed by her classmates throughout her life, Nora had difficulty trusting anyone besides Sarah. Mason was a popular kid with lots of friends and a couple of girlfriends in the past. So what did he want with her?
What if this was a prank. Someone must've dared him to ask her out, and now they are laughing at her expanse.
Stop it, Nora. You are too negative. She scolded herself.
Nora decided to stop worrying so much and focus on the positive.
She looked inside the closet and settled on a pair of white shorts and a floral sleeveless top to wear on her pizza date. She never liked to wear too much makeup, so she lightly glossed her lips and put on some eyeliners. She pulled her hair up on a messy bun and inspected herself in the mirror.
Not bad, she thought to herself. She can't be as gorgeous as Sarah or as sexy as Lucy, but she wasn't exactly ugly either. If anything, Mason's interest in her gave her a slight boost of confidence.
This is going to be a nice date. I finally get to go out with a cute boy. Nora thought to herself and smiled.
Around 5:45 pm, she drove her Honda to the pizza place. She went inside and sat on one of the booths. It was almost 6:15 pm, and there was no sign of Mason. She ordered a coke with the server and looked around, slightly worried. I hope I am not being stood up...she thought to herself. She imagined Mason at his house laughing at her with his friends because she was dumb enough to think she had a chance with a guy like him. She started to feel discouraged but was relieved when she spotted Mason walking inside.
"Hey, sorry I am late," Mason said while sitting down in front of her. " I was helping my friend with his truck and lost track of time. Will you forgive me?" He gave her his best charming smile.
"It's okay, really." Nora smiled back. " I wasn't expecting your text but glad you asked me out."
"I am glad to hear that. You look great, by the way." Mason winked at her.
"Thanks," Nora said shyly. She felt slightly uncomfortable sitting here with Mason. She never went out with anyone other than her friends and didn't know what to say. She wished she wasn't so awkward when it came to socializing.
"Are you okay?" Mason asked, interrupting her thought.
"Um..yeah! I am sorry I was just thinking about something." Nora said awkwardly.
"Well, I hope it wasn't about another guy." Mason teased.
"I'm just a little nervous, that's all," she said and offered him another smile.
"What's there to be nervous about? Am I really that scary?" Mason chuckled.
"No...I was just....." before she could finish her sentence, she heard a deep voice behind her,
"Well, well, well, look what we have here? If it isn't the dogface and the pretty boy!"
Nora spun around to see who was talking even though she could recognize that voice anywhere. James was standing with his arms crossed, and behind him were his usual followers, Ryan and Bruce. His eyes were cool and menacing.
Great...another one of my nights is about to be ruined, Nora thought.
