Maverick's jaw clenched coldly, and his fingers stopped their furious typing on his keyboard to hover on it. His heart suddenly felt as if it were suffocating, causing him to tug and pull the tie loose a bit.
Repeatedly recalling the woman's infuriating words and her smooth, soft call for Corbyn almost drove him crazy due to infuriation.
If Maverick didn't pull himself to leave, he knew he would end up f*****g that infuriating woman to death right there and then!
Valencia.
Back then, that woman had always put him first—Maverick this, Maverick that—with her doe eyes shining brightly in intense adoration. But now she doesn't even want to see his face!
It can't be that Valencia simply tossed all the care and adoration she had for him to that Corbyn madman, can it?
Maverick gnashed his teeth in anger, and his hand unconsciously pressed down on a key. “Very good, Valencia…”
Ring
The sudden ringing of Maverick's phone snapped him out of his thoughts.
Maverick elegantly picked up the phone next to him and slightly lowered his head to view the caller.
Seeing Tatiana written on it, his cold expression softened, and he picked up the call immediately.
"Boo-hoo, Maverick, it's scary. The nurse says I have to be in the hospital for a week. How can I visit aunt and uncle? How can I have fun? It's all my fault; if I had listened to you, I wouldn't have been such a trouble. I'm sorry, Maverick. Please forgive me.” Tatiana's sobs and fragile voice drifted into Maverick's ear from the other side of the phone.
Maverick's black eyes softened, and his anger dissipated. Hearing her cries, his heart inevitably ached on Tatiana's behalf.
Although Tatiana was sick, she was determined not to trouble Maverick, and all she wanted was to visit Maverick's parents.
For years, Tatiana had never changed. It had always been like that, with Tatiana docile-ly taking the blame for everything that happened.
She would even feel guilty for such a simple thing as getting her stomach upset, even though she wasn't the reason she had a poor stomach. If it wasn't for that accident... “No need to cry and blame yourself, Tatiana. I'll be there.”
“No. No. Maverick.” Tatiana interrupted in a dainty, panicking tone. “You. You have a job; it's my fault. I shouldn't have called you. But when I heard the news, I couldn't...” Tatiana bit her lips, and her voice trailed lower.
She quickly shook her hands in the air and hurriedly spoke up. “Maverick, never mind. You can't keep coming to the hospital every time; it'll make me feel bad. I'm used to staying in the hospital.” Tatiana argued softly, her voice laced with worries.
Maverick's expression changed into a firm one. “Don't say anymore. I'll be there in a few minutes,” he uttered domineeringly and cut off the call.
For years, Tatiana had silently gone through all the torture because of him. The least Maverick can do is take care of her and give her the best.
_____
The room was large and decorated in an exquisite, fluffy style that'll definitely pull any child's heartstrings. In the room, there were four large bunk beds.
“Orson, Hudson, and Iris, have you gotten mom yet?” Iverson pursed his thin lips and gloomily asked in his childish voice.
Suddenly, he stretched out his hand and tossed his phone on the bed before lowering his head dejectedly—blame swiveling in his black orbs.
Iris shook her head and balled her little dainty fist, her blue eyes teary and her little body trembling. “No. Mom's phone is still switched off, just like last night.” Iris responded and sniffed gently.
Last night, Valencia left the mansion for a business meeting after informing the quadruplet.
Although the quadruplet vehemently refused to let Valencia go, Valencia coaxed them and promised to make it back for the quadruplet’s bedtime and their midnight stories.
However, even after the quadruplet fell asleep and woke up in the morning, they didn't hear from Mom at all. Even Mom's phone was switched off, which was totally unlike Mom!
“Did mom go missing?” Hudson suddenly susurrated in a trembling voice, his black eyes filled with fear at the word. Quadruplet’s mom is Quadruplet's everything! The quadruplet doesn't even want to think about Mom going missing!
As soon as the words spilled past Hudson's lips, a sharp gasp befell the room.
Iverson's small lips pursed, and he quickly interjected in an argument, his little fist clenched. “Mom is an adult; how can mom be missing…”
Before Iverson could complete his words, Orson coldly raised his phone slightly, making everyone see the browsed content on his phone.
Currently on Orson's screen were search results for missing adults for the past hours, days, weeks, months, and years.
Seeing the search results, Iris’s little heart thrummed against her chest at the thought that it might be likely that Mom had gone missing.
Tears pooled in Iris’s eyes, and her clenched, dainty little fist tightened. “Adults can also get missing; does that mean mom... Boohoo!” Before Iris could complete her words, she broke into a loud sob.
The boys quickly got down from their bunk bed and quickly went to join Iris in her lower bunk.
“Iris, don't cry. Mom will be back soon.” The boys quickly crowded Iris and wrapped their hands around her to gently comfort her.
Iris is the princess among them, so the boys believe that their responsibility is to protect her and prevent her from being in harm’s reach.
They all knew how sensitive Iris was. Whenever anything happens, regardless of whether it is good or bad, Iris tends to have the strongest reaction.
“Hm, don't cry. Mom will be fine. Let's ask godmother, godfather, grandma, and grandpa about mom, okay?” Orson’s cold voice softened, and he gently coaxed Iris.
Iris blinks her long eyelashes. She wiped the tears away with her dainty hands and nodded her head solemnly. “En. Let's go to ask about mom.”
Immediately, the quadruplet got down from Iris’s bed and walked out of the room, with Hudson holding Iris's right hand and Orson holding Iris's left hand protectively.
Familiarly, they all maneuver their way around the big mansion without a hitch.
With a solemn expression on their faces, they bypassed guards and maids, who kept greeting them respectfully until they arrived in the living room.
(A/N: I'm so sorry, I had to shuffle between states. Officially back!)
