Outside the clinic, she let out a long sigh, as if the world that was suddenly dropped on her shoulders was suddenly. Although she liked Eric, he sometimes made her feel the compulsion to spill her secret to him. Lyall followed beside her without uttering a word, acting as if he had not heard everything that went on. Even if he had, which he did, it was absolutely none of his business.
At that moment the only thing that was his business was Due.
He followed closely as she led the way, pointing out some shops and other places to him.
“What do you think?”
As per her earlier words, he could make his decision after having a look at the pack.
Lyall stopped in his tracks, causing her to do so too. They stood facing each other in the street, clearly paying no mind to the handful of people who would pass by from time to time on a busy day.
“You… There is no need to go so far. I helped you only because I could get something in return. I’m by no means heroic nor do I want to be.”
Lyall’s words were said with an indifferent look as if all of it had absolutely no meaning to him. And it certainly didn’t. Everything was to be used by him to achieve his goal. Everything he came by was to him, simply a means to an end.
Gently tapping her thighs with her lean fingers, Due stared at him for a moment. She couldn’t figure him out and it made her feel uneasy. Maybe it was because of the seemingly everlasting indifference on his handsome face as if it was glued on it, but she somehow felt a surge of pity for him.
A feeling she could not understand.
She similarly met his unwavering eyes as her words came out with the same confidence she exuded,
“I think you are thinking too much into things.” She started pointing between herself and him with her slender fingers, her brows knitting together in a frown when a tinge of displeasure invaded her heart.
“I don’t know you and neither do you know me. I simply hate feeling like I owe you something and that is the only reason I’m going this far. I would usually care a rat's ass what really happens to you. But unfortunately, I owe you this. The relationship between the packs is as frail as a strand of hair. And this is my way of helping you back. You can choose to take it or leave it. If you take it, I’ll help you settle in. And if you don’t, I’ll get new sets of clothes for you and see you out.”
Her words were said in almost a single breath and Lyall could make out the annoyance in it. Her cheeks were tinged red and he could hear her heart drumming in her chest as her hands her clenched in a fist by her side with a frown on her lips.
He almost wanted to click his tongue, but he held himself back, not wanting to put to waste years of effort, preparation, and holding back his emotions.
“Thank you. If the offer is available, I would like to stay here.” He said with a slight smile after getting himself together.
Due nodded her head at his words, the tension that had her strung up completely dissipated and she led him whilst asking, “Most people choose to stay in the apartments with others, but if you like, you can get your own house. It won’t be too big but it should be enough for a single person to live in comfortably.”
Without giving it a second thought, he chose to have his own house, “I don’t do too well with so many people around.”
Due almost snorted and blurted out how he should live outside a pack if he doesn’t like people, her temperament revealing her slight annoyance.
They walked for about 15 minutes without either saying a word.
Soon, they reached a relatively small house with huge trees behind it. There were a few other houses by it but they were not too close or too far and there was the privacy he desired.
Lyall nodded in satisfaction.
Glancing at her phone, Due winced and then let out a sigh, letting him know that her father wanted to see her. She left him there without a glance back at him.
Lyall watched her run off with his hands by his side. When he was the only one left, a bolt of bottled-up anger and unwillingness flashed across his eyes. His hands trembled by his side. Drops of blood tainted the ground beneath him as he fisted his hands holding himself back with everything he had. And a restrained tyrannical aura ruptured from him, lasting but a second before it was held back.
He clenched his eyes shut, gritting his teeth as he took in deep calming breaths, slowing down his heartbeat.
Years. He had waited for years to get to the point that he was. There was no way that he was going to make a mess out of everything he worked so hard for.
Although it was much more difficult than he thought it would be, Lyall held back. He would bid his time. There was no need to rush.
Having calmed himself, he turned around and stepped into the house. The door opened smoothly. It was much more spacious than he thought it would be.
There was a small living room, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a single bedroom. Everywhere was dusty, but that was it. Nothing looked spoilt. It seemed that everything was maintained well. Although the place was dusty, it wasn’t something he couldn’t take care of.
He placed his backpack down, took off his shirt, and got to work on making the place habitable.
