7. Zombies!

2661 Words
One by one the zombies began emerging from the ground like insects, the smell emanating from their rotten corpses had clogged that air of the entire clearing. For the first few seconds after they had dug themselves out of the ground they didn't open their eyes, but once they had their white eyes were focused on us. Sebastian and I stood there with our swords in our hands, ready to defend ourselves, but I just couldn't seem to understand why their eyes were white. “Do not make any noise at all, the zombies are blind. We can use that to our advantage,” Sebastian whispered to me. I noticed that each of the zombie’s eyes looked glassy and fogged over, the iris and pupil were both filmed over with a thick cataract. I was confused, did they have any sight or were they only looking at a field of white? That meant that they were blind zombies. Sebastian and I were slowly stepping backwards, it was a good thing that we could get out of here without having to fight. “I didn't know that zombies could be blind,” I murmured and Sebastian nodded. “Actually, most zombies aren't blind here, but the ground we are standing on is cursed. Not just the land but the water flowing from the land. The water from that river is cursed, if you had drunk the water from it you would have been turned into one of these people,” Sebastian replied as I looked at the river in surprise. “Do you mean that all those people were normal once, but after drinking the water from that river they turned into zombies and became blind?” I asked, as we walked away from the river area. “Half of what you said is true. These people were normal before they became zombies, all of them were members of the higher clans who went to help the lower clans. After losing a battle to the Draug, he took the irises from the eyes of the corpses then turned them into zombies by forcing them to drink the water of this cursed river. “These people became blind, but due to being trained during their lives in the higher clan their strength is greater than a typical zombie. All of them had been turned into soldiers for the Draug since they became zombies. They are not in their right minds and those people may not be able to see, but their ability to hear has been so heightened that they don't need eyes. Of course a person bitten by one of these zombies transforms into a zombie in less than five seconds,” Sebastian explained. After listening to him I decided it was best not to fight them because Sebastian would be fighting them alone, he was a goblin and I was a human, how could I help him? “Let's get out of here,” Sebastian suggested and I nodded. We were both inside the forest the moment we turned around more than one hundred zombies were standing in front of us. “OH s**t!!” Sebastian angrily yelled. They must have sensed our presence which meant that we were now trapped, even though we hadn't wanted to fight them. “Now what?” I asked as he gave me a look. “We need to run,” he advised seconds before we took off running back towards the river. They had blocked our way into the forest, so we couldn't escape that way. But the zombies near the river heard the sound of our footsteps as we ran up to the river. I watched as the zombies turned their heads left and right, in an incredibly creepy manner as they tracked which direction we had come from. The zombies were moving towards us, while running I chanced a look back and saw that they had sandwiched us between the two groups of them one in front one behind. We kept running straight into the zombies ahead of us. “WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO NOW?!” I yelled. “DON'T STOP!!” Sebastian shouted back as he raised his right hand towards the sky a light was being emitted from the sword in his hand. The whole sky shone with the same light. There were no signs of darkness anywhere around us. What was he doing? “I, Sebastian, the crown Prince of the World of the Undead, evoke the vindicator in the name of the destroyer of the world," Sebastian called. I noticed that he was now running behind me and had placed the shining sword in my hand. "Do it!" He said, but I didn’t understand. "Do what?" I asked and he smirked, looking at the zombie. "Evoke the vindicator!" Sebastian exclaimed, grabbing my hand as he turned the sword so that it faced the ground and buried it with full force. We did it together. A shining light radiated from the sword. I realized that due to that light all the zombies stopped in their tracks and that something strange was happening in the sky. "How did all this happen? What is going on?” I asked him. "You evoked the Vindicator," Sebastian replied. Now I understood that without me he would not have been able to wake them up. I had been the one to evoke them. I was looking up at the sky as lightning struck around the two of us. There wasn't just one lightning bolt, but so many lightning blasts that I had lost count that had surrounded us. The moment the lightning stopped I saw at least fifteen humanoid beings around us and there was a lot of light emanating from them. Their entire bodies were made of light, they were so beautiful that I couldn’t tear my eyes away from them. I moved away from Sebastian to walk towards them, there were eight women and seven men all of them had their eyes closed. “What are they?” I asked Sebastian, admiring them. “We are vindicators,” one of them answered, opening her eyes. I immediately backed away from them as I watched all of them open their eyes and begin kneeling down in front of me and Sebastian. “Crowned Prince, Destroyer,” they all said together, bowing their heads. I looked at Sebastian, who accepted their acknowledgements. How had they known that I was a destroyer? Suddenly the zombies that had been frozen in place were moving, they were about to attack us. “What are your orders for us?” They asked again, I had been thinking about how to get out of this tight situation. I glanced over at Sebastian as he looked at the zombies. “Sebastian, do you have a place where we can stop these zombies?” I asked him and he nodded. “About five kilometers from here, we have to travel continuously without stopping. At that location we can stop this hoard of zombies.” Sebastian replied and I looked at the vindicators. The number of zombies far outnumbered our small group even though I had a sword in my hand didn't mean that I actually knew how to fight. I was just a regular person, I had never held a sword until today, but everyone was still standing there waiting for my order. "I order you guys to destroy the zombies on the way for us. Clear a path. We have to make our way east to a location about 5 km from here. Kill them all!” I ordered upon hearing it, all of them bowed their heads to me then stood up from the ground, turning towards the zombies. A bright weapon that emitted a similar light to them appeared in the hands of each of them that looked very dangerous. The length, width, and edge of these weapons were enough to break anyone's confidence. I smiled staring out at the zombies, this should be enough to face the zombies right now. "Let's go." I told them and immediately one of the Vindicators slammed his sword on the ground and cleared our path towards the east by burning zombies. I did not know their swords could burn them in a few seconds. It was great! Both of us were moving in the same direction and all the Vindicators were clearing the way for us. The sword in the hands of all of them was not only dangerous in appearance, but they were so swiftly attacking the zombies that each of them had destroyed at least 20 zombies at once. At the same time, Sebastian was also destroying the zombies that got in our way. He had not been allowing any zombies to come near me, but I kept the sword in my hand for protection. While running, we all reached a clan where some kind of ceremony was taking place. But within a matter of seconds I realized that it was not a ceremony, they were practicing funeral rites after someone's death. Sebastian and I were soaked in sweat and the Vindicators were still fighting the zombies. This clan had not even known that zombies were coming. "We should tell them about the zombies," I told Sebastian, but he had his mouth clenched shut. "What's wrong?" I asked him, but I got the answer to my question on my own as I felt a strange sense of peace. The sounds of zombies’ screaming and growling had completely stopped. The whole forest had become quiet, the only sounds that could be heard were those of the clans members who were crying. "Something is wrong!” Sebastian claimed, I had noticed that we were not standing on any common ground but in a crematorium. "We are in trouble,” I warned Sebastian and as I spoke he looked down at the ground. The sound of zombies screaming echoed in our ears as we looked towards the direction of the forest. The Vindicators were still fighting, those zombies were now moving twice as fast towards us. The ground under our feet began to tremble like an earthquake was coming. "Oh my god," I blutered as all the dead bodies buried in the ground started to surge to the surface one by one. The people of the clan were attempting to run away in fear while others were trying to fight them. There was no way to escape from this clan and there was no time to find a different way because we were so badly trapped here. "Now we can't run away, we need to fight!” Sebastian told me. His sword reappeared in his hand as he started attacking the zombies. The entire clan, the Vindicators, and Sebastian were fighting the zombies. The Vindicators and Sebastian were doing everything possible to protect me. They hadn't let a single zombie get close to me. They were rising out of the ground in dizing quantities like a more disgusting version of a cicada. I noticed that no one from the clan was able to defend themselves from the zombies. The zombies were biting their feet as they tried to eat their flesh. Sebastian and I were trying to drive the people of the clan out of the battle area. "This clan is the weakest clan in this world. These people will not be able to put up a fight against these zombies. You have to do something!" Sebastian told me, while striking at a zombie's head. I looked around and realized that the zombies were over running us. I didn’t know why I had a strange feeling after listening to him, I glanced down at the sword in my hand. These people kept telling me that I was the Destroyer. That was when I remembered the Draug's words. He had cursed me in my dream when I had come here to the World of the Undead. "This is the boon that I give to you that will turn into a curse for you. See you soon... Destroyer" Those had been his words. There was a rush of anger and hatred in my blood, I felt my blood growing hotter than the fires of hell. The weapon in my hands turned into a very large sword. Sebastian had noticed that the sword was glowing in my hand and there was a smile on his face. "Finally you are ready," Sebastian said and I nodded. A group of zombies came running towards me. Sebastian was about to move forward to defend me, but before he could I swung my sword in the air in one swift motion sepating all of their heads from their torso with one swing. Sebastian’s jaw dropped as he watched me doing it. I hadn’t known that I could do this, but it was really cool. It felt like I had turned into someone else. The shining sword in my hand was proof of that. "Yes I am ready for this," I replied as he smiled at me. "Then let's go," Sebastian prompted as we began to kill zombies. We spotted an opening where we could escape from this clan. As we were running Sebastian and I had been clearing so many zombies that had been coming to eat us. Just as we were about to exit the clan a big zombie appeared in front of me. His height, condition, and strength could not be considered normal when compared to the other zombies. Sebastian and the others were busy and I understood that I needed to take care of this mess myself. I tried to attack him many times, but like we were also of a different kind. I kept stabbing his torso and even cut off his hands, but he just kept getting back up again and again like it had no effect on him. I was breathing hard as I thought about other ways to defeat him. Sebastian noticed me with this big ugly zombie. "He was the commander of that high clan. He has only ever lost once due to his physical structure. His only loss was to the Draug when he turned him into a zombie,” Sebastian shouted the information to me from afar. He was trying to make his way to the gate from a different direction. I took a deep breath as the zombie drew closer to me. Despite having been converted into a zombie, I could still see the pride of being a general in him. He sprinted towards me at a rapid speed, I was about to fall into his grip when I saw an opening and slide between his legs so that I was now outside the clan gate. Sebastian had also made it out of the gate having killed two zombies. "Let's get out of here. Now we just have to cover another kilometer to get to the location,” Sebastian clarified as he started running east, but I had not followed him. I was still watching the Vindicators and the tribes people who were facing off against the zombies. They could all die at the hands of the zombie commander. No one had defeated him. "What happened? We have to get out of here soon or else...'' Sebastian began talking, but I had been ignoring his point. I moved closer to the giant zombie and re-entered the clan territory. "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING? LET’S GO!" Sebastian screamed at me as I glared at the zombie. "Didn't anyone tell you that if you grow too tall, that you should not think of someone smaller than you, as weak?" I taunted as he ran towards me. I tricked him and reached his back. I used my sword to slice through the back of his knees causing him to fall to the ground. I used my advantage to jab my sword into his skull, finishing him off forever.
