XANDER
“Lana is the woman for you. I don’t know why you’ve refused to bond well with her.”
My father uttered with an edge of finality as He stood gazing at the garden through the window with his hands clasped behind his back. His voice deep and commanding.
I've always known my father to be a man of his words. He never stopped at meddling into my affairs but choosing a woman for me was a decision I think I was entitled to take.
“Father, shes not my type of woman and moreover, I don’t seem to have any connection or am I attracted to her.” I replied sitting on the uniquely crafted wooden chair, designed and polished with fine mehagony that gleamed under the bright white light in his room.
The armrests were wide and adorned with detailed carving of two fierce wolves as if it was protecting his from anyone who dared to challenge him.
“You must understand son, your coronation is just by the corner. It's your duty to marry a woman to strengthen the pack. It might not be for love but it has to be for the good of the pack.”
“But father………” I argued my voice tight with restrained emotion.
“No no……no no…..” he interrupted shaking his head to the sides while raising his his two index fingers.
“You have no choice my son.”
I stood tensed with a mixture of sorrow and anger. My fists clenched, my jaw line set in defiance as I let out a primal scream.
“I don’t love Lana. How can I rule with someone who means nothing to me. A woman I feel absolutely nothing for. It's such a pity that she doesn’t realise how much I detest her presence around me.”
My father turned, fixing his gaze at me, his eyes hard as steel.
“You will speak no further. The decision has been made. Even if she's not your fated mate. You will be coronated alongside with her as your luna. Period!”
His words cutting through the air like a knife. I heaved and swallowed hard with the weight of unspoken words caught in my throat as I stood up.
“And what about my happiness father? Does that mean anyting to you at all?”
My fathers expression softened a little. Letting out a half smile and placing his right hand on my shoulders.
“Look son, Happiness comes in different forms my dear. Sometimes you have to let go of your happiness for the sake of packs affairs. Duty always comes first. In due time you will understand perfectly.”
Thick silence fell between us for a moment before I spoke up.
“Thanks father. I beg to take my leave.” I said with tight lips as I walked out of his room.
********
Later that day.
I sat at the garden, inhaling the sweet scent of daisy flowers beautifully growing in the garden. I was trying to cool my head and clear my thoughts.
“Greetings Xander.”
“My Alpha. The most powerful.” He said in a teasing tone trying to ease the tension around us.
“You seem to be deep in thoughts. What could be bothering you so much?”
Hollio frowned, a dark brow shooting up.
“What is the matter?”
“Do you think Lana is the woman for me? Do you think marrying her would be the best decision to make?” I questioned almost not giving room for him to answer.
“I need your honest answers Hollio.”
Hollio paused for a while and sighed.
“My alpha, you know how you feel about these and its not in my place to tell whom you should marry or…….”
“My father doesn’t seem to understand any of these things” I snapped, interrupting Hollio immediately with anger in my tone.
“My father is insisting.”
“Did you both have a conversation about this again?” He asked.
“Of course. I left his room a while ago and I came here to clear my thoughts.”
“You don’t need to get yourself worked up over nothing. Just give it time and everything will definitely fall into place.” He uttered with a smile.
I looked up at the night sky sprinkled with stars. A cold breeze blew by. I sighed.
“You're right hollio I just need to give it time.”
Hollio broke the silence between us. His voice low while he leaned forward.
“Speaking about your coronation Xander, do you sense the change in the air? Everyone is looking up to you now more than ever. Are you sure you're ready for the weight of the Alpha's mantle?”
I gaced into the sky as I carefully processed my thougts while trying to answer his question.
“Ready or not Hollio, its mine to bear. my father has trained me for the journey ahead. It feels different though.” I paused and looked at hollio.
“It feels different as the responsibilies will soon be mine alone.”
For a moment I had mixed feelings, I signed heavily and ran my hand through my hair.
“What if I'm not ready for whats ahead? I mean, the rival packs, the threats beyond the boarders………”
Hollio replied firmly. “That’s why you have me. We've faced this threat before and we conquered. As your beta, I will stand by you through it all.”
I smiled slightly. The tension easing from my shoulders. We should go have a drink.
