Merrick and I are seated on a sofa seat for two people. Directly opposite us are our mom's seating each on a different sofa. They can't stand being in the same house, I don't want to know what would happen if they sat on one sofa.
It's been five great year's since Merrick and I got married. His family's business was not doing well due to some transaction his mother did. Our family had to help them.
The two companies were merged in order to work together, hence our marriage, since we are the heirs to the two companies.
My grandfather was the one running it until we would be ready which will be very soon. A lot had happened within the cause of those five years.
I am surprised I am still seated here, waiting for my mom to open the letter on her hands. It may change our lives for the better or worse than worst.
Trust me you don't want to know what is there.
My instincts are already telling me, but I am in denial. I don't how I would be able to move on from it.
"Cara, open the damn letter already. Delaying is not going to change what is written there."
"She is saying the truth mom. Delaying won't change anything." I found myself saying. I don't even know why I said that because whatever is in there is going to change my life.
I should have kept my mouth shut because my words gave her the courage the open the damn letter. I could not read the expression on her face. My eyes were trained on her begging to be given some good news. She went through the letter for several minutes.
I know it was not that long but it felt like hours. She lifted her eyes from the piece of paper and looked directly at me. They gave it all, her eyes gave it all.
"No, it can't be true mom, there has to be a misunderstanding."
"DNA does not lie Alina."
"Shut up," I shouted at her.
Who does she think she is to tell me that DNA does not lie. The doctors could have switched the blood test or the results.
Yes. It has to be that.
Merrick has not said a word since we got here and starting to piss me off. Am I the only one willing to fight for us or what? He is okay with whatever his mom says.
"Merrick, please say something."
"What do you want him to say?"
"I told you to keep quiet. All of this is your fault."
"Are you going to let her talk to your mother like that, Merrick? And how is this my fault? Your dad is at fault here."
"Alina, you need to calm down." Those are the first words he has said to me since this morning.
"I need to see for myself. I don't believe it."
I snatch the letter from my mom and go through it.
'Based on the testing results analyses conducted the probability of half-siblings is 99.999999%...'
Merrick and I are half-siblings.
What's the difference?
Shut up, stupid mind.
The front door opened and closed revealing a very happy Megan. Her relationship and I went downhill two years ago due to some misunderstanding. The news about the three of us being siblings have made her very happy.
In short, she doesn't want to see me happy with her brother. I mean our brother.
The s**t sucks, so much.
"So I see the truth is already out," she says with a smug look of her face.
I swear she hates me. She has a lot of bitterness and her mission is to spread it to everyone around her.
"What should I call you. Bestie like before, or sister. Oh, wait, Rick and I are older than you so that means you are our baby sister."
I know you are wondering how our lives turned into a rollercoaster. While we were in a senior year back in high school, the Pinault's found someone was draining money from their company.
His mother was the one doing it. So instead of sending to jail, they forced her to move away. She has not been in this country for the past five years and things were going well, at least that's what I thought.
We all were in the after the party wedding for Lexi and Andres. I am glad they had left for their honeymoon before this woman ruined their day.
She was so angry at us screaming and calling us an abomination. At first, we didn't understand what she was saying until she uttered the unimaginable.
No one believed her. I mean, who could? She nothing but a liar and a manipulative b***h. Four days after the wedding here we are. No wonder she hated me.
Speaking of?
"Is that why you always hated me?" I finally asked.
"Wow, you are a genius."
"Then why didn't you say anything back then?"
"I didn't know you were planning in getting married. I did try to tell you but you never listened."
"You are lying Amy, if you knew from the beginning, you would not Have kept quite."
"I had my reasons as to why I kept quiet and to reveal it now."
"We didn't know that we were related, that's is if were are."
"Ali, just let it go."
"Are you really going to give up on us because of some s**t you don't believe in. What we have is real and you know it."
"Sweetie, what you feel for each other is the sibling bond. Not love. Merrick would know that since he is in love with someone else, right?"
"Not now mom." He said sternly.
"Don't deny it. That friend of yours, the brunette..."
"Mom I said enough."
"Oops, another secret is out." Megan and Merrick said at the same time.
Merrick doesn't have a brunette friend. Apart from Steph? No, it can't be, I know she had a little crush on him when she transferred to our school but she told me she was over it.
Or she lied.
He lied to me too.
I know what I feel and it's not a sibling bond. Yes, I don't have any siblings but I would be able to differentiate the two. While now I have two of them.
Right now my heart is breaking, I feel as if I can't survive this. It's too much.
I love him, I know that I love him so much but he was taking me for a fool all this time. They all were.
Megan knew about them, Steph and Merrick.
"Like father, like son. An apple doesn't fall away from the tree."
"I knew Alex very well. He would never cheat on me, Amelia."
"Are you trying to convince yourself or your daughter?"
"So you and Steph?"
"I was going to tell you."
"For how long have you been fooling me? Six years, or more."
"Let's not do this here Alina."
"No, we will do it here. Where you will not lie to me."
"It was one time I was drunk."
"What happened?"
"We hooked up, we were drunk and..."
"Stop, please stop."
My fists were balled as my nails dug in my flesh. I wanted to feel some physical pain maybe it would help reduce the emotional one.
Who am I kidding? Nothing changed. I felt like my heart was being ripped out of my body. And you tell me this is a sibling bond?
"How does it feel? Watching the man you love with someone else?" Meg finally asked.
"I don't love Stephanie Meg, it was a drunken mistake."
She is so sick.
"You really think I enjoyed not helping you with the Vince?"
Megan was and is still in love with Vincent. Cliche I know, falling in love with your brothers best friend. The problem was that it was one-sided. Vince didn't love Meg back but was in love with someone else.
Megan wanted me to help her try to hook up with Vince. The plan was to get them to spend the night together so that she could do the cliche things that happen in novels and movies.
He was already engaged to get married to Sasha. Meg's biggest nemesis even before Vince came in between. In short, she wanted to stop the wedding and trap Vince to marrying her. That happened two years ago.
Vincent is my friend also and I knew me how much he adored Sasha. Doing what Meg wanted would have destroyed three lives. Hers, Sasha's and Vince. He would never have forgiven me if he knew what we were planning.
Meg was going to spike his drink, so I warned him about it. I really tried to talk to Meg to back down and that Vince didn't love her the way she wanted but she said she would do it without my help.
Vincent was very mad at her when he found out. He didn't tell anyone else though. You know what happened after. She hates me for ruining her plans that night.
What she doesn't know is that I helped her. I know that someday she will meet someone who will love her the way she deserves.
"All you care about is yourself, Alina. You never loved my brother, I mean our brother. You just wanted someone to prove you have it all."
"So now we are talking about love. Do you want me to remind you..."
She stood up abruptly and left. No one knows what she did with Vincent, so she left before I could say anything. It's not like I was going to.
"I know, but you heard what mom said, what we feel is the ..."
"That not true and you know it. You know that I love you rick, you know that. But I am guessing that does not matter because you have Steph. She is young to be very happy when she finds out about this."
Hearing him say what we had is a sibling bond made me feel more miserable. Did he truly not love me anymore?
The mere thought of that made my heart clench with pain. It feels as though I am drowning in pain and that I will never be able to float again. I am sure I will never be able to love anyone I as I love him.
He started working as the CEO of both companies a month ago. It's not been official yet it will be when I start working there too. We have the same rights and shares in that company, now I don't know what will happen any more.
Steph started working there also. I don't know how long their little romance had been going on. I am not giving up on us because what we have is real and I know he knows it too. When the media knows about this they will have a field day.
"So what are we going to do now."
"What do you suggest? Maybe divorce so that you and Steph can have your happily ever after?"
"I am sorry about me and Steph but I need you to know that I don't love her."
"A drunken mind does things he is afraid to today while sober. Are you telling me that you are not attracted to her at all even if its physical?"
"I am not going to deny, she is a beautiful woman and I find her attractive."
"I know she feels the same way too."
"What do you mean?"
"She had a crush on you, years ago, I mean she still has if the two of you slept together."
"Just tell me the truth, Rick, have..."
I was interrupted by the loud voices of our moms at the lounge who stepped out a while ago. We quickly walked to the direction of their voices.
"Alex loved his family, that is me and my daughter. You know very well that Merrick and Megan are not his children."
"You are still in denial. He came back to me, he always does when he needed my help. And I am I glad he did because I helped him. You were always busy with your work to give him your time." Amelia was now screaming at the top of her voice.
"Are you guys for real right now?" I was very angry with them.
"We need to find a solution to all of this, you screaming at each other is not helping." Rick helped me out.
"Especially when it's about a person who is dead and played you both."
"We now have to pay for the consequences of your mistakes."
"You are at fault mom. You could have said something along time ago. How do you expect us to move on from this?"
"Merrick is right. There is no going back now. If dad was alive he would at least be able to help us here."
"Alex is dead, even if he was alive..."
"HE IS NOT DEAD!?"
What??
