Piper started falling asleep over her macaroni and cheese, and by eight o’clock was sleeping so soundly that it would have taken a herd of unicorns to wake her up. Mac had no qualms about leaving her, though he did set up an extra phone as a kind of baby monitor in case she woke up in the middle of the night, which she rarely did. He slipped out of the guest suite, only to find Mr. Tran watering a bicycle. The more time he spent at the Trans’, the more he caught glimpses of his dementia. It took a while, but he managed to coax the man back to the main house, where Mrs. Tran, who’d been in the bathroom, thanked him profusely.
