01: The News
Rose’s POV
“What are you slacking for?” I called out to the maids, chastising them happily and gently as I walked around the working maids.
“We’re sorry, we’ll be faster.” One of them apologized and I smiled as I took in the sight of the beautiful mansion.
The hustle and bustle of everyone around the house, working hard to welcome their alpha, my husband, was enough to briefly get my mind off how much I’ve missed him.
I couldn’t wait for Xander to be back home after three months, he had left the house on exchange training in the central bureau- Dark Moon pack- and it felt like it’s been years since I last saw him.
Watching as everyone worked together happily, I couldn’t help the wide, happy smile that played out of my face.
It was as though it was time for a huge festival. Closing my eyes and holding my head up high, I couldn’t stop playing back the happy memories Xander and I had made.
The fact that this was the first time he’s been away from me for so long made my heart grow fonder and I have no idea how long I could wait before exploding into bubbles of excitement.
Xander and I have been in love since we were kids, we started off as best friends before eventually finding out that the moon goddess had made us each other’s mate.
Xander is an alpha, a very strong one at that and when we eventually got married, I could tell that a lot of ladies wished they were in my shoes.
He had a lot of girls crushing on him and lots of men that respected him so getting married to him felt as though I’d been rewarded with some kind of trophy.
My hand unconsciously rubbed my belly and my heart tightened as my face fell. The thought of being married to the love of my life for over four years with nothing to show for it ate at me.
Xander and I had tried our best to get pregnant and have kids but I couldn’t carry his baby and it kills me everytime I think about it.
It kills me to know that no matter how hard we both tried, I’d never be able to give him a child because well, because I’m a barren.
As the bond between Xander and I grew, I thought my inability to give him a baby would change his feelings for me but they never did.
“I didn’t fall in love with you or get married to you just so that you can bear me a child.” His voice kept ringing in my mind and I felt tears well up in my eyes.
“I married you because you’re my mate and I’m madly in love with you and if it bothers you so much then we’ll keep trying until you get pregnant.”
Xander always assured me of his love for me and most of the time I always wonder what I might have done to please the moon goddess in my past life for her to bless me with someone like Xander.
He was always the rainbow that gave me hope after a really stormy day and he has always been my strength whenever I was weak.
“Where should this go, my lady.” A feminine voice jolted me out of my thoughts and I lifted my gaze to see one of the maids in front of me.
She looked utterly surprised to see me in a bad mood, she hurriedly dropped the flowers she was holding to stand beside me.
“What’s the matter? Do you need anything?” She asked, her voice heavy with worry, concern and care for me and I couldn’t help but smile.
Why did I have to think about my inability to bear a child and ruin this happy moment?
Xander has never complained about me not being able to give birth so why am I worried about it?
“It’s nothing,” I smiled as I wiped my tears, “I’m really fine, I’m sorry I worried you.” I sniffled as I tried to brighten up and make the best of today.
I’m also ovulating so although I didn’t want to put too much hope into it, a part of me genuinely hoped that when Xander and I had s*x by the time he got back then my fate would automatically change.
Barren or not, I’ll keep trying until I’m able to give him an heir. I know he wants an heir and he’s just pretending not to because he doesn’t want me to worry too much.
Time flew by quicker than I expected and with each tick of the clock, I kept getting nervous as I wondered if Xander was really coming home.
“Alpha Xander is back!” The guards announced and that was enough to brighten up my mood as I rushed out of our bedroom.
I sprinted as fast as I could down the stairs to meet Xander. Not minding the crowd behind him, I flew into his arms.
“You’re back,” I smiled as I showered his face with wet kisses, “I missed you so much.” I added, trying to kiss him on the lips but he averted my kiss.
“What’s going on?” I asked when I noticed his cold shoulder and stiff behavior and it wasn’t until then that I noticed the woman standing behind him.
She looked beautiful with ocean blue eyes and blonde hair that fell on her shoulders freely.
I’ve heard a lot about this stranger to not know who she is. The beautiful woman standing behind Xander is the daughter of the Alpha of Dark Moon Pack, Harper.
What is she doing here? Why did she come back with Xander?
My chest tightened and my heart raced but I knew better than to jump into conclusion.
“Rose, I have something to tell you,” Xander’s voice put a halt to my thoughts and I managed to look away from the woman only to be met with my husband, staring at her lustfully.
“W— What’s the matter?” I asked, my fear audible as I spoke, “you’re scaring me.” I finished with a wry chuckle.
Xander’s eyes finally met mine, our gaze locked and I could see the betrayal written boldly in his eyes but then I tried to search for something else, the love he always showed me and it wasn’t there.
“Harper is pregnant and I’m responsible for it.” Xander finally spoke and I could’ve sworn that I heard bells ringing in my ears as a hard blow hit my face.
No way, I probably didn’t hear him correctly, there’s no way he just said that Harper is pregnant for him.
My heart stopped, my face felt cold and even my fingers trembled as I tried to open my mouth to say something, to ask a question but I couldn’t.
My head soon started feeling light, my knees feeling weak and buckling forward as my legs threatened to be unable to carry me anymore.
“Wh—-“ I was unable to finish my statement because then my brain went blank and everything before my eyes went dark.
