5. GRADUATON PARTY

5. GRADUATION IVY’S POV Sweet scent of toast is what woke me up in the morning. With my eyes still half closed, I got out of bed and stretched and that made me completely awake. Warm sun fizzled in through my grey curtains. Shedding my pajamas off, I walked into the bathroom, turning on the shower. As the warm water cascaded down my naked body, I closed my eyes and tried to recall the first day I went to med school. It has been eight years down the line and I have not come to regret that path I took even once. I love medicine and being a doctor is my biggest achievement. My graduation party is today and this is literally the best day of my life. I couldn’t wait to start practicing as a pediatrician. I excelled well in school and the real practical job is about to start. I wore my white robe after the shower and dried my hair. I wore a grey sweat pant and a small tank top for breakfast. Pulling my hair into a tight high ponytail, I skipped downstairs my ever sensitive nose catching the tantalizing smell of bacon. My stomach gave a loud growl that could have been mistaken for rumbling of thunder. “Look at her, the girl who made me proud,” My mother’s warm voice eased to my ears. She was telling my younger sister and brother, Meghan and Isaac respectively. They clapped in unison and this made ripples in my heart. I love my mother. She has always supported me in everything. She has worked her ass off to ensure we get good education and all I want to do once I get to work is to educate my younger siblings and to take care of her. If that is not enough, I needed to go to the cells where my father was jailed and fight for his freedom with a very good lawyer in the country. He did not attack that woman they said that he did attack her. That day, he was at our shop that was nearby. He has spent over five years in prison for what he did not do. My father is a good and honest man. “Your father will be very proud of you,” My mother said fighting the tears that had formed at the slit ends of her eyes. “Don’t cry mother.” I pulled her into a tight hug and my siblings joined us in the tight hug. “We will fight this together mother. Don’t worry.” I told her. She hold me a little bit more before she pulled away and wiped tears off her eyes. “Sit and have breakfast. The visitor’s will be here already.” My mother forced a smile on her face. I was used to her being like this. Whatever they did to my dad was so unfair. As per now, we hardly have a father figure in my life. I tried my best to push away those thoughts that were bringing a surge of anger to my system. This was my happy day and now that I can do something about what happened, I didn’t need to worry any longer. My brother Isaac said a prayer and we took our breakfast in silence. The memories of our dad never fail to make us sad. They ripped him off from us and that is something I will never forgive when I get to know who did it. My sister Meghan seeing the mood we were in, she went and turned on the stereo and our favorite song blasted on the speaker. That was enough to make us happy. My mother stifled a smile and the rest of us danced to the song with the choreography our dad taught us. We were happy all of a sudden. This was my happy day and I needed to be happy for my achievement. “Go and dress up, let us celebrate your success,” My mother advised once the gospel song was over. “Yes ma’am,” I etched a smile permanently on my face. “I am coming with you,” My sister Meghan said and followed me upstairs. “I am going to help you look good today,” She offered. She was thirteen but her sense of style was just amazing. Actually, it was an honor for her to pick my outfit. She picked a red dashing dress for me and that is what I was going to wear for my graduation party.
