TAKING ADVANTAGE OF SITUATION

Mist's P.O.V.

“Did you think about my offer that I gave you the last time”, David asked me in a low tone while we were working on a car. I pursed my lips into a thin line and didn’t look at him. To be honest, I was really thinking about what he asked me the last time. I was reluctant to agree because of the nature of the work but tempted because of the money involved in this. My driving skills were good and I knew that I could earn money easily for Naomi’s treatment if I set my foot there. But the whole process was not completely legal and that was why I was a bit reluctant. “You are still thinking about legal procedures, right?” he asked me again and I stopped working.

I looked at him this time. “You are right, David. You know very well that I am the only earning member in my family and I have to take care of Naomi’s bills too. I can’t think recklessly”, I replied to him and he chuckled. “I know everything about you, Mist and that’s why I want to help you. “Let’s have a deal”, he suddenly said and I raised my brows in curiosity. “Join my crew for six months only and you will be on track only for big deals not for every night. What’s say?” he proposed and asked me in a soft tone in the end. I didn’t answer him immediately as I was still weighing his words. My salary was good enough to live a good life but not much to pay hospital bills for a long time period. My part-time job here in the garage was also not a good-paying job.

“Give me some time to think, David”, finally I spoke in a low voice and he nodded in acknowledgement. “I am still not asking you to answer me immediately. This Saturday night, there is a race there. The p*****t is not very much but I think, you should participate and see everything from your eyes first before taking the decision. Of course, if you win, the money will be yours”, he once again proposed with a shrug in the end and I took a deep breath with a small smile. “Thanks for understanding me, David”, I said and then we both continued our work again. We had two cars to repair and one car for modification. David soon left me to close everything after we repaired the first car. I concentrated on my work and looked at the time.

I had one hour before my shift to finish tonight and there was still a car to modify. Dad was not feeling well for the past two days. So, I needed to go back to the hospital tonight to stay with Naomi. With all those thoughts in my mind, I started working on another car immediately after I wrapped my work on the first car. David sent two more boys to help me. We worked hard without taking a break to finish our work as soon as possible. I was about to finish my work when suddenly my phone started ringing. “Your boss is calling, Mist”, Mathew told me and I knitted my brows in confusion. It was already 11 at night. Christopher never called me late at night before unless there is something very urgent.

I immediately stood up and went towards the counter where I had put my phone before starting work. “Call me in five minutes. It’s very urgent”, he spoke in a hurried and hush tone as soon as I picked up the call. Before I could ask him why, he hung up, making me more confused than I was already. “What happened?” David asked me in a concerned tone. I frowned while looking at the blank screen of my phone. “I don’t know. He just asked me call him back in five minutes”, I told him truthfully while looking at my phone in confusion. “What can you do then? Call him… after all he is your boss”, David said while shrugging his shoulders and then went away.

I called Christopher after a while. He picked up the call right after two bells. “Hey mom… how are you?” he spoke in a very enthusiastic tone but I frowned. “Mom? What’s wrong, Chris?” I asked him in a concerned and low tone. “’What??? What happened??? How did this happen? Don’t cry… don’t cry… I will be there soon. Don’t try to move yourself. It will hurt you, mom. I will be there soon”, he didn’t give me any chance to speak and blabbered I didn’t know what. His parents didn’t live here and were in the Maldives on a vacation. What was wrong with him? Why did he behave so strange?

“It seemed that your boss is in big trouble tonight?” David chuckle after commenting on Christopher and I looked at him in confusion. He grunted and then rolled his eyes. Before I could say anything, he flicked my forehead, making me frown in pain. “You are really stupid, Mist. The way he was yelling on the phone and was calling you, mom, it meant that he was in trouble with a woman and used you as a scapegoat to come out of the situation”, he said in an irritating tone. I suddenly remembered about Mr Mayor’s PA. A crooked smile crept onto my lips when I realized what happened to Christopher. I laughed while thinking about different scenarios that happened to Christopher. David frowned while looking at me but I couldn’t tell him why I was laughing hard. I didn’t want to imagine his state but it would be really hilarious. My laughter died for a second when my phone started ringing again. I laughed again while picking up the call. “Where are you? Come and get me”, Christopher grumbled in a gloomy tone on the other side. I laughed again after listening to him. “Okay… .. send me your location”, I said to him, and then hung up the call. I looked at David who was looking at me with an amusing smile. “I guess… I need to go to get my boss from the street”, I joked and we both laughed once again.

“Yeah… go then… I will take care of the car”, he said in a light tone and we both laughed once again while thinking about Christopher’s condition right now. I then went to the changing room and changed my work clothes to my casual clothes. I came out of the garage and drove towards the location that Christopher sent to me. It took me twenty minutes to reach there. I laughed harder when I found Christopher sitting on a big stone at the corner of the road. The whole area was deserted and he was looking like a lost puppy waiting for his master to find him sitting on that stone. “Why are you laughing at me?” he yelled gloomily while settling himself on the passenger’s seat.

“What happened?” I asked him while driving away from there to his apartment. He huffed and crossed his hands in front of his chest. “What could happen to me? It’s all your fault. It’s you who gave the idea of making me a bait to Kane”, he grumped and I widened my eyes in surprise. It already had this idea in my mind but still, I was surprised that Kane really took advantage of the situation. “That woman… she was so clingy”, he shuddered hard while making so many weird expressions. “However”, he looked at me with a smirk. “I got what we want”, he almost sang the sentence and I widened my eyes in surprise but laughed in the end.

He told me everything about his meeting with Mr Mayor’s so-called secretary and how annoyed she was. All I did was just listen to him and laughed occasionally. Christopher sometimes really behaved like a kid and it really amazed me to see an all-grown-up man whining and throwing tantrums like a four years old child. He then asked me about Naomi and I told him that I had to go to the hospital to accompany her tonight because my father was not well. He asked me about her operation once again. I knew that he wanted to help me but I was reluctant to take his help. He was my boss after all and I didn’t want to curry favour from him.

Suddenly my phone started ringing in between our conversation. “It’s from Naomi”, Christopher took my phone and told me with concern. “Take this for me”, I requested him while keeping my eyes on the road. “Ms Blakefield… this is nurse Joel. You have to reach the hospital as soon as possible”, instead of Naomi’s voice, I heard someone else voice speaking in panic. “What happened to her?” I almost yelled in panic while clenching the wheel hard. “She collapsed… please … come soon”, she told me before hanging up the phone. “Drive to the hospital”, Christopher immediately instructed me in a calm tone and I immediately took a U-turn without even thinking twice.
