Chapter 4 When he woke, mid-morning, Clay was back in his own bed without any recollection of how he had come to be there. His first thought was of Vincent. Like a child creeping towards the presents stacked beneath the tree on Christmas morning, he went to Vincent’s room. He tried to turn the handle, but the door had been locked from the inside. He smiled. That was all he needed to know. For the rest of the day, Clay did as little as possible so as not to disturb Vincent. He wanted to give the vampire no reason to leave, although it was hard to spend the whole day being quiet. In the evening, as he was cooking dinner, he felt a presence behind him. “The smell woke me,” said Vincent. “But it’s okay.
