It is said that life is full of surprises. And I believed it now. Now this was not the kind of surprise where you feel like your so happy that your cheeks hurt from smiling and tears form at the corner of your eyes from happiness. It's the kind of surprise where you feel you can't speak even tho you are internally screaming and want to run away, be anywhere but there but your feet won't move. It's like they are rooted on the ground.
Finally getting some courage I moved ahead all while never moving my eyes. The same expression of shock was visible on his face. He was sitting beside Rihanna but the moment I took a step forward he stood up as if he was being suddenly electrocuted.
I took a clear look at him. He had changed so much in these five years. Of course appearance wise but his face, and especially his eyes. His eyes were always filled with mirth and he always had crinkles around the corner of his eyes but now they look hollow or maybe because of his glasses. Yeah that was a addition. He had black rimmed glasses resting on his nose which made him look even more sexier. His entire appearance was screaming power.
He was clad in his perfectly tailored black armani suit with his hair pushed back. Only some strands of hair had escaped that gelled hair bun or whatever it was. Overall he looked as if he was getting ready for a photoshoot. He looked Zayn Malik ish.
Before I could utter a word Rihanna came rushing towards me and embraced me. Instantly I could smell the strong vanilla and jasmine.
"I'm so glad you came."
Words died in my throat. This was the nightmare. Reality but nightmare nonetheless. Rihanna was getting hitched to Randhir. The man I once knew, the man I once loved, the man that once used to be my best friend. Isn't it said present is your 'present'? But in my case it came unwanted wrapping. And also the present that I never asked for. My eyes were still trained on him.
"Yeah. I had to." I whispered while detaching myself from her hug. She had a huge smile on her face.
He narrowed his eyes like he was trying to figure out something. I'm pretty sure he's shocked to see me here as Rihanna's sister. I mean he could have never thought that the girl he left behind all those years ago would be back. And bam as his fiancé's sister.
What am I supposed to do? What's the protocol here? Should I shut up that I know him or tell everyone?
Well the first sounds really good cause they don't need to know about my past. And also it's past. But what if he tells them?!
I don't think he would take the risk. Think! He would never reveal it and be embarrassed and worse beaten up by dad. If he's familiar with dad's Italian side then he definitely won't take a risk.
But what about Rihanna?! Should I tell her in secret? She's going to marry him and this would definitely crush her. No. I'll pretend that I'm not his ex girlfriend or the girl that has been waiting for him to return. Nah.
It's not like I hate Rihanna and want bad for her. She has always been a sister to me no matter how much I hate the fact. She never treated me like anything other than her sister and for that fact I owe her.
"Sun this my fiancé Ron. Uh... I mean Randhir." She giggled at her mistake. I had a weird feeling in my chest at her nickname. It was my nickname to him. I used to call him that. I gave him that nickname. It was mine. Ugh! Will you stop it?!
I knew I should have copyrighted when I had time. Stupid brain!
He gave a hesitant smile. Dimples appeared on his right side of the cheek. Sensing my glare he stepped forward.
"Hi. I am Sanyukta, Rihanna's sister. It's nice to meet you." I thrust my hand towards his direction. My eyes were drilling into him. Only if I had the power of laser. Sheldon Copper and I could destroy anyone with the power.
"You are her sister?" He asked confused etched in his voice.
"Yes Randhir. She's my step sister. I told you about, remember?!" Rihanna asked while nudging him. Her face looked mortified. Perhaps she was embarrassed because of Randhir. As if he sensed all eyes on him he flashed a smile and forwarded his hand towards me.
"Yes, yes I remember. It's nice meeting you Sanyukta." He smiled and it was not all genuine. Cause there were no dimples and also his eyes screamed that it was not nice meeting me at all.
"Randhir! Why don't we go have breakfast?! I'm pretty sure you are starving." Stacey announced while clapping her hands. As if something snapped into him he left my hand and turned his face towards her and gave a nod.
"Butler! Set the table." Stacey yelled.
"Sanyukta, honey will you be joining us for breakfast?!" Stacey asked while eyeing my bag and suit jacket.
"Nah. I'm sorry but I'm running a bit late for my work. But I'll definitely join you guys on dinner. Bye"
"Signora! Signora your coffee. Careful its steaming." Butler rushed out of the kitchen holding the takeaway type mug in his hand. This sweet old man!
"Thank you Alex." I grabbed the mug.
"No worries. Have a good day Signora" He gave me one last glance and rushed back into the kitchen.
"Okay cara have fun at work. See you."
I waved at my dad who was waving as if it was my first day of school. I did not want to be a b***h and spoil that enthusiasm and also because my mother would be on my behind for behaving in non daughter way. Or whatever she calls it.
As soon as I was out of there and in my car, tears started to form in my eyes. He was here. He's really here looking like an powerful man with everything in his control. Looking like he didn't break my heart and everything is fine between us. Like he's meeting me for the first time. How? Why? So many unanswered questions kept running in my mind.
I never thought I would see him again. After he disappeared like a ninja, quick and without a trace I lost hope of ever meeting him. But here he was. Like my walking dream. Scratch that. Like every girl's dream.
You are strong! You can't let him affect you. He's over you. He's marrying your sister. Just let go. You'll be alright!
My pep talk kind of worked because I wasn't hyperventilating and tears were not welling in my eyes anymore. With a new found courage I turned the ignition and started the car. I have to do this! I can move on and be strong. I don't want to be the homewrecker or someone who can't see her sister happy. I'm not that person. I don't want to be that person.
"Good morning Sanyukta" Ellen, the office receptionist greeted, pursuing her lips. It looked her chewing gum was stuck inside. I so badly wanted to roll my eyes and snort.
Ellen is type of person you shouldn't pay much attention. For one she is always jealous of others success and two she thinks showing off your fake boobs to authorities get you your desired position. The kind of people I don't really like.
If it wasn't for Sam's unhealthy obsession with being good to people she would have been fired. I mean she's on the phone half of the time and other wise she's rude to people. Lethargic combination!
"Hello Ellen. Good morning. Has Sam arrived?" I asked while strictly maintaining eye contact.
She looked thoughtful for a second. She continued chewing her gum while staring at me.
"I reckon I saw him"
Oh and another thing she had this annoying habit of faking the British accent though she's an American. Like seriously if you talk to her for a minute you'll get annoyed.
"Ohkay. Thanks..."
For not all being useful. I bit my tongue from uttering the next part. She gets on my nerves.
I gave her one last glance and walked towards the elevator. Surprisingly the office was quite and there were absolutely no one in the hallways or the reception area. There are always people waiting in reception or a crowd ready to board on elevator. Today's a really weird day!
I let out a sigh as soon as the elevated dinged and opened. Oh boy! It was definitely going to be a long day.
"Hello people" I announced gathering the fake enthusiasm as I stepped inside Samuel's cabin.
"Hello" Few voices echoed back.
"We'll talk this later guys. Thanks for your time" Sam clapped his hands.
There were few murmurs and in fraction of seconds everyone cleared the cabin taking the long exit instead.
"Always so formal."
"Well someone has to be Miss Sanyukta"
"f**k you. I told you I was going at dad's." I looked at my watch. I was only twenty minutes late.
"Anyways what was that about?" I walked towards the huge table where he was leaning.
"They heard that I was getting replaced and were concerned about this new anonymous boss so I had to assure them everything's fine. It's not like he's going to be here forever."
"Wow that's so loyal of them. What's the matter with him anyways?! You did not tell me anything about it. I thought you being the owner and CEO would know everything."
"I know. This businessman holds thirty percent shares of our company but he was not active in meetings because he had issues to deal and also he doesn't live here. Now he's here for his marriage so he's interested in getting involved. That's it. It's no big deal really." he released a sigh.
"Wow all these years I had no idea. I mean I had to know that information. When you think you know everything. Huh!"
"Don't be so hard on yourself. Seriously I have met this guy like thrice and it was very formal. He's a skilled businessman. And once you had a opportunity to meet him as well but you didn't come to the gala with me." Sam snorted.
"Oh God. Will you let it go?! I said I was sorry." I exclaimed.
It was a year ago that the incident happened. We had a huge argument, me and Sam about Oreo cookies, him saying that cookie is the best part while I disagreed. That led to a quarrel where I didn't talk to him and he had to go to the gala with Ellen to which I forgave him. Like he suffered enough going with Ellen.
"No you were not. I saw you laughing about it with Jay And Kat." Sam huffed like a child.
I laughed.
"It was funny that's why. But I'm really sorry." I bit my lips trying to stifle my laugh and appear serious.
"Yeah okay I forgive you. So how was visiting your dad?" He enquired all humour gone from his voice. He sounded firm.
"It was all good till my ex made a entry. He is the one that is getting married to my step sister. Welcome to my messed life." I laughed but it was not out of humour this time.
"Wow I'm so sorry cara. I wish it would have been me instead of you." He looked sad and sorry. God I hate that look on him. He looks like a puppy.
"Nah I don't wish that upon you. But seriously my life can be made into a TV series. Bet I would be richer than the Kardashians." I flicked my hair.
"You wish. You don't have ass for that tho." He smirked. His hands were folded and crossed against his chest while he looked smug.
I gasped. Cause I'm a drama queen like that. I shook my head and directed him a glare.
"You just did not go there."
"Oh butt I did!" Ugh. He cracked at his own comeback.
Do you sometimes have that urge to clap your hands for their comeback and also kill them at the same time? Like damn man you can think but then you suck for doing that to me. With Sam I have that problem 99 percent of the time.
Before I could speak the loud footsteps could be heard indicating that someone was approaching towards the cabin.
I gave Sam a look that said 'watch your back' cause I'm a stickler like that and sat in one of the chairs.
He rolled his eyes and walked away from the table.
Knock. Knock.
"Sir Mr... is... here to see... you. Should... I send... him in?" Mary, Sam's personal assistant poked her head inside, her voice sounded rushed so I couldn't hear her. She looked huffy and sweaty like she ran a flight of stairs.
"Morning Marie. Are you alright?" I asked.
"Hey. Morning. Yeah I was stuck in the elevator. It's a long story. Anyways should I send him in?!"
"Yeah please do. And see me after the meeting."
"Will do sir" She gave me a smile and hastily shut the door.
"She's always in a hurry." Sam shook his head while sitting on his chair.
"That was normal for you?" I asked.
"Eh at some point you get used to her." True that.
"Goodmorning Samuel."
I looked at the source of voice and my eyes widened. Now, why is he here now?
