"Deltas, do your rounds for all the houses. Gamma, check the borders and keep the patrols
doubled. Beta, it's your last day taking on the alpha duties. That includes hiring new wolves to
care for the pack house."
My beta smiles smugly, despite the sad undertone. Help only needs hired because the Luna is
dead. Normally, she would care for the pack house.
"Already did it. Two days ago, in fact. You're behind alpha."
Normally I'd quip back, but that's just not part of my facade. Just do the job.
"Good. I'll be back later tonight after the meeting. I expect everything to run smoothly," I say
with a warning tone.
I receive several nods and as I turn to walk out, a large hand claps my shoulder.
Turning, I see my gamma R. He's seems even large than usual and I figure his excelled physic is
due to the recent loss of his good friend and Luna. Stormie and him were great friends and they
spent a lot of time training together. I know working out is how a lot of wolves deal with pain
and I've splurged in the gym longer recently as well.
"We're all glad to see you up and running again. You're doing Stormie proud."
My mood darkens at the mention of her name. To be able to think about, hear about her, and see
her impact, but not touch her or be with her is painful. I know right now, she would be holding
my hand and staying cuddled close to my side. Her honey and sugar scent would calm me
tenfold and I wouldn't need to pretend in front of my pack.
I can only manage a grateful nod before I take off. Leaving the large log mansion like pack
house, I make my way to the garage and look for my SUV keys. When scanning past the hook, I
see Stormie's Lamborghini Keys.
After little hesitation, I pluck those up and walk to the black sports car. She loved it because she
thought it was the closest she would ever get to the bat mobile.
I hope inside and move the seat back because damn, I forgot how short my mate was.
A hint of worry plagues me and I wonder if I'll forget other things about her. Her long wavy
black hair. Her porcelain skin. Her laugh that takes sound between a strange mix of dark and
bubbly.
I shake my head and start the car. I'll have to find a way to keep her memory alive. Making a
mental note to do so, I pull out and take off.
..................................
Surprisingly enough, the alphas and Luna's don't smother me with the pity I thought I'd receive.
They act much different than my pack, offering condolences and kind words.
In fact, I almost make it through without tears.
However the tears are not from me.
Bethany, my mate's childhood best friend bursts into tears as soon as she sees me. Her mate and
home packs previous Alpha in training comforts the sobbing woman with Pat's on the head and
silent shushing.
"I'm sorry. I just- I miss her so much! You know, she did always consider death to be her friend,
but it doesn't make it any easier."
I smile softly at the words. Stormie was a strange woman and though her superstitious ways
raised brows, they had a calming effect on her. They brought her comfort and certainty. I'll miss
her mindful rants that seem to make life look so simple.
Ten minutes later, we're all sitting around the oval table and the empty seat next to me which is
usually occupied by Stormie makes me shift uncomfortably.
There are eleven alphas and eight Luna's, a smaller number than ever.
There used to be thirteen packs, one was overwhelmed by rouge's and the other came after my
own pack. They came for my territory. They killed my mate. So, I mauled them all one by one.
Them combined with the absence of my mate reduces our numbers obviously.
Forty something year old alpha Rufus who seems to be only in his late twenties start the
meeting.
"Thank you all for making it. We offer our condolences to alpha Ragnar," he says gesturing his
hand in my direction.
"But of course, we know Stormie's spirit will guide us in our decisions. The meeting was called
tod-"
"It was called," Interrupts alpha Brigome, "because Alpha Ragnar has slaughtered the Stealth
Moon pack! I had a close alliance with them and now half of our imported foods are unable to be
ordered and delivered!"
I narrow my eyes at the ginger headed man and lean forward threateningly.
"Stealth moon was greedy enough to attack MY territory! They forced their way past MY
brigades and MURDERED MY MATE!"
I take the pen out of my pocket and press my thumb harshly on the clicker. This was a habit that
Stormie had when she was stressed.
An old friend of mine, alpha Jackson cuts in with a hand held up defensively.
"Ragnar, no one blames you. We all woulda done the same thing. We just have to figure out how
to fix the gap in the order with the em-"
"I'll fix the damn gap myself! All your orders will come to my pack and I'll assign new jobs for
pickups and deliveries, but if ANYONE so much as defends stealth moon, I'll have you and your
high ups mauled as well! Then I'll take over your pack the same way they tried to take mine!"
After that, I leave the gaping and wide eyes alphas and lunas, storming outside with a vengeance.
How dare they! They didn't need me for that! Why didn't they grant me the curtesy to sit this one
out?! Now I have another thing on my to do list and my mood that darkens by the hour.
Slamming the car door closed behind me, I sigh heavily.
That went well.
