Chapter 5
RIGHT in the heart of what I was reading, an unexpected gust of wind ruffled my hair. One of the male students in my class startled us and let out a loud growl.
"Ugh!" he growled again as I turned my attention to him. He fixed his gaze intently on me. His teeth grumbled as it suddenly grew, showing me his fangs. I was shocked and couldn't even move any muscles.
In a single instant, the other students in my class bolted from their seats and moved away from the male student who was staring at me.
"Bull s**t!" I was startled when Mocha, who was sleeping next to me, jerked me abruptly into a corner. My fellow students seemed bothered too. The way that he is staring at me gives the impression that he wants to murder me.
"Don't you dare look back at them! Your perfume, where is it!? Give it to me!" As soon as Mocha hurriedly ordered me, I hastily pulled the bottle out of my pocket. She quickly sprinkled it on me, and by the time she was done, the container was almost empty. In addition to that, she hid my cologne in her own pocket. How did she know that I have this perfume?
Our instructor walked towards us.
"Ms. Agustin stepped away from Ms. Lumibao for a moment!" Our professor said in a commanding tone. Mocha regained her composure. Our instructor came up behind us slowly, and as she did so, her expression appeared to relax after she sniffed my scents.
“Jacob! You made a mistake. Could you please return to where you were sitting?" our professor said and looked at us again.
"Could you please remove Ms. Lumibao from our class first, Ms. Agustin?" She added. Then she turned her gaze on me.
"I am going to temporarily dismiss you both from my class. Catherine, I'm sorry for the trouble this has caused you, and I hope you'll forgive our inappropriate behavior."
I just nodded and never had the courage to utter some words. Felt like I lost my tongue. I became speechless.
Mocha then hurriedly gathered our belongings and dragged me out of the room.
When we were finally far from the building, she led me to a hidden location that was still a part of the university. She slowly pushed me down against the chair and turned her back to face me.
"Will you be honest with me, Catherine? You don't belong in our world, aren't you?"
My brow furrowed in response to her question.
"What are you saying?" Indignantly, I responded.
“I had no idea what you were talking about,” she added and confusion was written in her facial expressions.
"I smelled you earlier; it's a good thing for you that I don't have the kind of appetite for someone like you," Mocha said.
When she said that, I was completely taken aback.
"Huh?" I only said. She plopped herself down on the grass and slouched her shoulders forward.
"Why are you so slow? You're human, we're vampires. Did you get that?" Mocha said like the words she had just spoken were normal for her. On the contrary, that is something that frightens and shocks me. I got to my feet and began to retreat.
"Oh? Why?" she inquired in a nonchalant manner.
"Don't you dare come near me!” I said in horror.
"Stand back! You're getting too close!" I yelled at her.
Mocha remained seated in the grass while folding her arms across her chest. Out of my sanity, I started to run for my life. My God! This is not true! I blurted inside my head. I am freaking out inside. Even though I have no idea where my feet will lead me, I'm just going to keep running through this congested area. I mumbled the word 'vampire' out of my sanity. I sighed and shook my head.
"Catherine, they are not the real thing! They don't exist anymore!" I said to myself, keep mumbling it as I keep on running.
“Mocha is just crazy!" I said to myself again.
"Who's crazy?" I was startled when Mocha appeared in front of me, and as a result, I tripped and fell onto the grass. My God! I don't want to die! She was standing directly in front of me.
"How did you do that..." I was unable to continue to question her because I am running out of breath.
"What makes you think that we're not real? It turns out that the theories and rumors about us are correct, Catherine. And you should thank me for not draining your blood. I don't drink human blood; this indicates that the Class E vampires' prey only for animal blood. And you? You're human, but the way you smelled earlier was too much to bear; even a gentle lion would lose its mind when it smelled someone like you," she continued to explain.
I shook my head and crept away, but I was so taken aback when she appeared in front of me again that I was startled once more. She grabbed both of my arms and held on tight. She said it with a condescending tone and added, "I'm going to get dizzy with you, I'm not even used to dashing all around."
I shoved her and then retreated backwards.
"Can you just!?” I stuttered and tried to make a fake laugh as I asked, "If... If you're just joking... take it back." Unfortunately, she did nothing but stare at me.
"Okay? Oh? You are a vampire?” I said in a confused tone, "turning into a bat or something?" Instantaneously, she vanished in front of me, and in what seemed like the blink of an eye, she was standing next to me.
"I'm not a magician," she clarified. I let out a hearty chuckle.
"What? I'm joking; I can't really see anything because there's so much darkness around us. You don't have fangs.”
She got up and moved so that now she was standing in front of me.
"Because we pretend to be humans, with the exception that our skin is as icy as snow because that is one of our distinguishing features. But this is me in my truest form,” she declared suddenly and solemnly. When she suddenly changed the color of her hair, my eyes widened in surprise. It changed to a pale golden hue, and at the same time, the color of her eyes shifted as well into red and it transformed into something resembling a cat's eyes. Her fingernails suddenly grew, and then her fangs emerged. I was so shaken up by what I saw that immediately I passed out unexpectedly.
BEFORE fully opening my eyes, I mumbled something and blinked a few times.
"Oh, here? Take it." Mocha offered to give me some water. I quickly grabbed it and drained all of the liquid from the container. Mocha expressed her concern by saying, "I hope I didn't scare you to death, because you suddenly passed out."
My pupils drew further apart, and I took a few steps back. I uttered those words with astonishment, "Is that true!?" Mocha then nodded at me. I hid my face with my hands. Oh my God! It drives me completely insane.
"Could you kindly take it easy?" I sparingly smiled and shook my head.
"Does that mean I'm the only human here?” I asked. Mocha’s face had a sunken expression.
She responded by pulling me upright and saying, "From what I can tell, yes."
"Let's get out of here, this is the stronghold of someone else," Mocha said.
"If we stay here for too long, both of us are going to die," she murmured to me. I didn't say anything to her and I just followed in her footsteps.
When we arrived at the modest lake, we had walked at such a rapid pace that I came dangerously close to falling. We chose to sit in the shadow cast by the tree. I felt dizzy. Because of what I have learned recently, my head is spinning around like a roller coaster ride. I inhaled deeply and exhaled slowly.
"How come you are familiar with my cologne?"
I was the one to ask the first question, and afterward I had to force myself to keep my courage together because the person sitting next to me was not a typical person. Mocha then turned her attention to me after making a very slight adjustment to her glasses.
As she handed me the bottle of the perfume, she responded, "Because I saw it in your pocket earlier when we sat down at our table."
"What exactly is the use of this perfume? My aunt Nely just told me to use this every minute,” I said while spraying my whole body again with this perfume.
"That was done in order to conceal the odor of blood from a human being.” Mocha explained while crossing her arms, "And I only know of one family that has that kind of perfume,” she added while walking back and forth in front of her.
"In that case, your aunt Nely is their servant and not you," Mocha said while still having a second thoughts
"Whose family do you live in?" she asked.
"Ms. Zoldic's house," I responded.
Mocha suddenly got to its feet and started moving away from me. What she did took me by surprise. She slapped her forehead and after smearing her face, she looked at me again with some trepidation.
"What gives, Mocha?" Even now, I have no idea. She was very serious when Mocha looked at her.
"You don't know what you got yourself into."
“Why!?” My response was hesitant at first.
"Then, let's talk somewhere else, Catherine. Some places are safer but not today," Mocha said without showing any emotion and then walked out in front of me.
"Let's go, and please I'm begging you, use the perfume," she said.
After hearing what she had said, I was taken aback, so I quickly put on my perfume and gathered my belongings. Mocha left me. I hurried my pace until I reached the door leading outside the University. Mocha called me but I did not bother myself to look back at her. I proceeded to walk in a straight line while I surveyed my surroundings. I am the only person present here at this time. Then a sudden honk of a car from behind me startled me and caused me to jump. It came to a complete stop and opened the door once more for me. I was picked up by Mrs. Zoldic's attendant. I dashed inside and kept my silence after entering the car.
I hugged my backpack so tight and held my breath for a while then exhaled deeply. I am so afraid to think that I am the only person here who can be considered normal. My anxiety is going through the roof right now!
The person who was driving me then suddenly asked me, "Is there a problem?" I gave him a slight head shake before turning away from him. I recalled Mocha's words warning me, which were to never look back at them. Because of the anxiety I was experiencing at this very moment, I found myself sniffling and having the urge to cry. Yes, and I am very interested in history and various theories, but I had no idea anything like this existed in the world. My mind has not yet come around to the idea that all of this is actually taking place. That this thing happening to me is not my hallucination anymore!
