BANGBANGBANG!!!
I groan and sit up from the table where I fell asleep God knows how long ago.
Who the hell is beating on my door at... eleven p.m.!
Holy hell it's almost midnight.
As I stand up and walk to the old wooden door, I wonder who in the world would have the
audacity to-
"Tess!"
My face scrunches in confusion and I frown at Troy.
"What are you doing here?"
This man didn’t even have the balls to get out of work and deliver the terrible news in person. I
bet if he was there, he'd have softened the blow much more than his blunt wife. Is that why he's
here? To apologize for not making it?
"There's been a misunderstanding. You see, Jasmine doesn't like the idea of hiring a surrogate.
Any surrogate. She's managed to chase all the other ones off and I should have known not to
leave you alone with her. The truth of the matter is that you're the perfect person to carry our
child and I truly hope you'll accept the offer and come back."
My mind is reeling. So, Jasmine just doesn't want a surrogate? Does that mean she CAN get
pregnant? Or does she just not want children?
Instead of focusing on their couple issues, I decide to appease the pleading man in my doorway.
Perhaps I won't die of starvation or get evicted like I thought.
"I accept."
Troy smiles widely and engulfs me in a tight hug.
"Thank you! You truly are my saving grace."
He pulls away and holds the door open wider for me.
"Jasmine is in the car and Carl will pick up your things later. I'd like to take you to the doctor and
get the insemination done today if that's all right."
Despite the overwhelming information and the surprise I've been met with, I allow Troy to lead
me outside and into the car where a cross armed Jasmine pouts in the front seat.
"Now Jasmine. Do what we talked about," Troy says sternly before making sure I'm buckled and
giving Carl the go ahead.
The blonde sighs and looks at me through the front mirror.
"I'm terrible sorry for sending you off. I should have consulted my husband."
I nod in acceptance of her apology and listen to the radio for the rest of the ride. It takes about
ten minutes to get to the doctors and Troy decides to leave Jasmine in the waiting room while
both of us head back.
Honestly, it seems like he wants this baby more than she does.
"Wait right here," Troy says lifting me onto the cushioned table.
"I'll just go have a quick chat with the doctor."
He's gone for another ten minutes and in the meantime, I swing my legs and hum tunes trying to
distract myself from reality.
I'm about to be pregnant.
I mean it isn't my baby, but my body is about to go through some serious changes.
"Alright," the doctor says coming in. She's a sprightly woman with strands of bright pink woven
into her dark hair. "I'm doctor Marsha. Are you ready Tess?"
I nod and press my lips together as I'm leaned back and my legs are parted. There's a cold feeling
in places I'd rather not say and I feel metal bustling about in my core. It's a strange feeling, but
it's not much different than a gynecologist routine.
Before long, Dr. Marsha backs away with a smile.
"Now it could take a week or a few for signs to start showing. There's about a sixty-three percent
chance the sperm will take and if all goes well, you'll be a mother!"
I don't bother telling her I'm only the surrogate. She'll figure it out at some point, or not. I thank
her profusely before leaving the room to find Troy leaned against the wall. He's so deep in
thought that he doesn't even see me.
"Troy? It's done."
He lifts his head in surprise and looks at my stomach before giving me a long hug. He must
really need it, because Dr. Marsha comes out before he let's go.
"Are you ready to go home? You should rest. Are you hungry?"
I laugh at how concerned he is and wonder if it will be like this the whole pregnancy. It's
understandable, but Jasmine doesn't share his joy. After receiving the news that all went well,
she nodded and set off. It seems like the doesn't count this as her child since she isn't carrying it,
but it's her egg. Isn't that all that matters?
Troy asks me to stay in bed for the rest of the day and I do so just to appease him. He actually
takes joy in bringing me food and hovering over me. To be honest, I enjoy it too. I've never
gotten so much attention and I've certainly never eaten so much food. I must have had four and a
half meals today!
Come bedtime, Troy is back to tuck me and the not yet formed baby in.
"Thank you so much Tess."
I shake my head and sigh a bit. He does know he's paying me, right?
"It's no problem."
"No Tess. Thank you. You don't know how big of a deal this is and... Well... Just thank you. So
much."
With that, he gives my forehead a kiss and sets off presumably to his own room. Today was a
whirlwind, but everything worked out.
For now, at least.
