Chapter Sixteen Wilder lay awake in bed, facing the wall. When Cherry had come in to check on her, she’d pretended to be asleep. She never wanted to speak to Cherry again. She heard the sound of a tray being placed on the table next to her bed and then Cherry’s footsteps as she crossed the room. When the door closed, Wilder exhaled and turned over. The room was empty and a tray holding a bowl of breakfast cereal and a glass of juice sat on the table. Next to the glass was a pill. Wilder picked it up, placed it at the back of her tongue, and drank a mouthful of juice to wash it down. She would have to wait for the medication to take effect before she made her move.
