“Wanna come over after school? You can stay the night and get a break from your house. My parents are out of town.” Cora suggested as we entered our last class of the day. “I am so ordering pizza with extra cheese and garlic knots.”
Tears brimmed my eyes and my chest felt over filled so I just nodded. The rare nights at her house were the only ones I got actual sleep. No locking the door or sleeping with a bat to protect myself. It had been awhile since one of my family had woken me up to start s**t but still needed the extra sleep wherever I could get it.
“Finley!” Lia, my other best friend, sat down beside me looking frantic and a bit sweaty. “You got to get out of here before anyone else.”
“Calm down and breath.” I put my hand up. “You can explain but not until your heart isn’t acting like it wants to jump out of your chest.”
“Thank you. I was just about to say something but I couldn’t hear my own thoughts over the her heart thumping in her chest.” Cora laughed handing Lia her bottle of water. “And it looks like she actually ran here with how much she is sweating. She never runs.”
“You’re right. Holy s**t now I might be a bit worried about what she is going to tell me.” Lia flipped us both off sending Cora into another round of laughter only to get shushed by the teacher.
Lia glared as she sucked down the last of the water and wiped her mouth. “Do you want me to tell her or not, Cora? I could just pretend I didn’t overhead a plan to jump her.”
“The f**k you would.” Cora whispered back her own glare matching Lia’s.
I snapped my finger between them and got their attention back on me. “Spill it, Lia. Cora will stop talking long enough for you to tell us. Thank the goddess we took the seats in the far back or we would be headed to the principles office.”
“True.” Cora said keeping her eyes on the teacher as she took roll. “Let’s hear it Lia. Also tonight we are having a girls night at my house.”
“I am so down.” She leans in closer as Tish and another groupie walk into the class late. “Listen I overhead Tish and Tanner talking to their group of jerks. They didn’t get the reaction out of you this morning that they wanted so they plan on jumping you after school and having some fun with you. Tanner mentioned all the way fun when Tish was talking to someone else. You need to leave before this class ends.”
I felt the blood drain from my body. “Wha-what?”
Cora grabbed Lia’s arm. “Are you sure that is what you heard?”
“Yes and then I ran here to tell you guys. Finley you have to leave.”
“How?” I asked feeling my anxiety start to go sky high. “She already took roll and it isn’t like I can just walk out of class. And my stuff?” I always had issues leaving without my things since I never knew when I might need it or to run.
“I will grab your backpack. Don’t worry about it.” Cora said nodding her head toward the teacher. “Ask to go to the bathroom and head out the back toward the forest. They won’t have anyone by the back gym door. It’s a b***h to open but you got the magic touch.”
“Thanks.” I took a deep breath and raised my hand. “Here goes nothing.”
It took a minute for the teacher to realize my hand was up but tish and her friend noticed instantly. They started whispering to each other sending alarm bells throughout my body. When the teacher finally called my name I rushed and asked her to use the restroom. I told her it was an emergency like a female emergency. She gave the instant OK and I rushed out of there.
Cora was right about the gym door being a pain to open but I got it open just in time because I heard rushed footsteps out in the hallway. They must have realized that I had left to actually leave not go to the bathroom. I had to get out of there. I had seven days before I turned 18 and I was not planning on spending any of them in the hospital.
I rushed into the forest making sure to zigzag and backtrack enough that it would confuse them. They could shift and their wolves were at full strength so it wouldn't take long for them to find me but I was going to make it as difficult as possible. I ran through the river a few different times at different sections before finding a hole in one of the trees to hide in. I covered the opening with brush and tried my best to breathe less and lighter. They would probably hear my heartbeat, but there was nothing I could do about that.
When I finally did hear footsteps I felt my heart dropp into my stomach. I never wanted this and it never should have come to this. I know my mother died because she came for me and protected me like a mother should but because she loved me so much I got her killed. My father didn't defend me and now everyone hated me. Because of that hate to night, I was going to get the s**t beat out of me yet again and Tanner was it going to defile me.
I laid there waiting listening to the footsteps get closer but they stopped we're still a pretty good distance from me. When I finally caught a little bit of their scent I realized it wasn't Tanner or Tish or any of them. It sounded like my father and my twin. I had heard more footsteps than that but I was more focused on my family being here. What the hell were they doing out here.
Guess it was time to find out.
