{♠Anubis Nileborn♠}
She’s been here for about a week, and my brothers are unsure of what to think. What to feel. Mates were never in our cards, we knew our lives were devoted to our father. We live for Pharaoh Nileborn’s plans. And in his plans were nothing for mates. Keeping that information from him could come back to haunt us but we didn’t have a choice. We know him. Aphrodite will get his full attention if he finds out she’s our fated.
Which brings us to problem number two. She is our fated. Not just one of us.
My brothers and I don't share anything. We have different taste, and the only thing we do well together is following our father’s orders. Ra is sadistic, Sobek hates people, Hapi is a gentle giant/psycho scientist, Cairo is a party boyaging alcoholic, and I…. Well I don't process emotions like normal people. At the age of twenty one, I'm ashamed to say it took me a while to get sarcasm, and hints when I make people uncomfortable.
So the idea of sharing one woman with my brothers doesn’t sit well with me. I just can’t share with them. We’re best friends, enemies, and competitors, we do not share. Imagine having to be with one woman and that woman being with my brothers!
Ugh, I could just be worried that she would find them better than me. I mean think about it, I have zero emotional skills. I would be a hermit if it weren’t for my family. Ra is a popular lady's man, he got her to flirt with him in mere minutes. Hapi may be a gentle giant when he’s with us, but he can get a lady to fall for him with just a smile. And don’t even get me started on Cairo and Sobek.
Fucking Sobek. Hater of all people and yet the most admired because of his mysterious behavior. Women eat up that. The more he rejects them the more they want him. As for me, I don't pick up on any hints, I do not flirt, so competing for a girl’s affection when my brothers are heartthrobs sounds like a very bad idea.
Aphrodite wouldn’t pick me. She would like them more. They have great personalities.
If she was any other person I would have told my brothers to just ask her out, so we can see who she picks and move on with our lives. But Aphrodite isn’t just anyone. As weird as that is to say. I don't know her, but on a surface level, she isn't just anybody.
She’s our mate. Mates are of great importance to my kind. Us Bearshifters have traditions.
Our father hasn’t given us the green light on her yet, so we are watching her closely.
Massaging my shoulders, I searched around my room for one of my favorite books when my cell phone rang. I reached under my pillow for it and placed it on loudspeaker.
Cairo’s voice rang through my bedroom. Drunk as always. “Anuuuuuuuu~ there’s a party tonight.”
“And? You know I’m not a party guy. Sobek and I have plans to just stay up today studying.”
“Boring. Aphrodite will be at this party, and Ra was thinking we could keep an eye on her even more. Make some small talk.”
“You mean Ra wants to f**k her? And so do you?”
Attraction is always easy to discern, you can want to f**k someone but not want to be with them.
“So do I but-” He's clearly drunk. Perhaps even wasted.
“I don’t want any part of this. Look, you guys can do whatever with her.” I said slowly, and Cairo sighed.
“Anu-”
“Anubis.” I corrected him.
“Bis bis,” he giggled.
“Why do you want me to be at this party? Look, she’s pretty. She’s our mate but f*****g hell there’s five of us. That’s a recipe for bad luck.”
“You think too much. Just come to the party, drink, have fun, eye that sexy minx, and maybe hit on some of your many fans." I snorted loudly. I have no fans, or perhaps I do and that is yet another thing I'm not good at noticing. “Just show up, and drag that bum Sobek out. You two just have to stay for thirty minutes. Time yourselves, then you can leave. Just be there. We’re brothers. I want you to get the best of life.”
So he says but I know Cairo. He doesn’t want me to enjoy life per se, he just wants more drinking buddies.
I had to agree. He’s persistent as f**k. I know he’ll show up to my room if I say no.
“Alright, I'll be there. I’ll bring Sobek. But after thirty minutes, I'm out.”
“Fine, buzzkill.”
Sobek arrived just as the call disconnected. He came with his bag and some textbooks. He's my favorite sibling because he’s easy to live with. Peaceful, and not messy.
Sure we’re all jerks to outsiders but we were raised that way. Family is everything. Our father had that rammed into our skulls.
He placed the books down on my desk, and the bag on the chair.
*Are you ready to get your study on?* He grinned, there were tired bags under his eyes.
“Change of plans. Cairo wants us at the party downstairs. He says if we stay for thirty minutes he’ll leave us alone.”
Sobek frowned, and his mouth twisted like he’d tasted a sour candy.
*f*****g hell. Why? I hate parties. Too many people. Too much noise.*
I chuckled, and walked up to him, patting him on the back.
“Me too, but you know him, he’ll come up here if we don’t do what he says.”
*I could knock him out?*
“Bad idea, he’ll be a diva once he wakes up.”
Sobek rolled his eyes before nodding. Twenty minutes later the whole house was full of loud noises, heavy bass, and people shouting.
We made our way down to the large living room where the main party was. Even though there were people everywhere. We had rules, no one was allowed on the third floor.
I spotted Ra, he was in a circle of girls making them laugh, and from the heavy musk of arousal I could tell those girls weren’t just smiling.
They’re ready to beg for him to f**k them.
My eyes moved from the sight, and Sobek vanished. For a big guy, Sobek is the best hider amongst us. He can dodge everyone. He was just gone. I’m sure he’s hiding somewhere. How the f**k can a large man hide that fast and efficiently?
Argh, I'm alone.
I spotted Cairo, chatting up a blondie. Brushing her face, and offering her that cocky smirk just to make her swoon. It worked.
Hapi was chucking a big keg of beer with the boys of the fraternity. They were cheering him on,, and shouting his name. Chanting it actually.
Idiots.
I walked over to the kitchen to get a can of beer. Even though I hate the taste of it. I reached for the fridge, avoiding the drunk people making out. Once I got a can, and surveyed the room. Feeling awkward, and out of place. A girl came towards me with a grin.
“Hi, Anubis.” her tone was strange. Like she was forcefully making it softer.
Hmm, she must have a sore throat.
“Hello?” I said with a bland tone, of course. I don’t show my emotions well. I have to think about it, understand the person I'm showing the emotion to, and then present my face or body language in the appropriate manner. For now, I don't know what she wants.
“I wasn't expecting to see you here.” her cheeks turned red. So a sore throat, and a fever? Damn, poor girl.
My neck turned from her as the door opened, my eyes blinked and there she was. Her purple curly hair was packed into a bun. But the messy, stubborn strands still popped in front of her face. Forming an assorted array of bangs.
She had her full lips covered in dark brown lip gloss, her eyes were moving everywhere. So perceptive and dangerous. They were hunting for something. She wore a short black skirt, and a thinly strapped white top to match. That's when I saw it. The bear claws on the side of her neck. The beast in me was ready to pounce on her. Why the f**k would she get tattooed claw marks, specifically bear claws?
This has to be a setup.
Her pierced tongue slipped out, wetting her lips where two more piercings lay. Everything I said earlier about wanting nothing to do with her flew out of my head. I want her. I want her to be mine. My brothers can have someone else but this girl-
Her eyes suddenly locked on mine, and she grinned from ear to ear. She truly was a pro hunter just from that look alone. She made my knees weak. My palms were sweaty, and my throat was dry.
She crossed the distance, and like a starving woman ogling food for the first time, she took in my form. The loud music wouldn’t have allowed her to say anything without shouting like everyone else. She instead dropped her eyes to my can of beer, and then to the stairs. And with that, she walked away. A sway in her hips put me in a hypnotic trance.
I don’t get many hints when it comes to people, but without a doubt, I knew she was asking me to follow her.
With one last look towards my brothers, they hadn’t seen her from the looks of it, I followed her trail. Searching the crowd as I got up the stairs. One of the spare bedrooms was open, but just a little. Her scent was coming from it. I snuck in and rested my weight against the door.
She stood by the window, her earrings swung as she tipped her head up. Long slivers with a cross at the end, made her look even hotter. Something about her was sinful, but my intuition was telling me to watch my back.
I don’t even want to think about the consequences of being here with this woman, not when I want her. I crave her.
If I were normal I would feel a tad guilty, because I know something that would turn her smile into a burning hatred.
I didn’t want to make the first move- I’ll be honest, I’ve never made the first move- so I cut out eye contact.
She laughs. “I would have never pegged you for the shy type.” gods, her voice. Seductive octave that sends shudders through me.
“I’m not shy, just odd.” What a tragic response!
“Ah, a weirdo with a sexy face. That makes sense.” I looked back at her, she was making her way towards me. Slowly.
Once she was close enough, I could smell her scent and perfume even more. The scent does not suit her. And despite her height, she was in charge. She had this dominant air that left no room for questioning.
My beast wanted to claim her, but my rational brain told me I would regret it.
She pressed a hand to my stomach, and it tensed.
“Stay with me for a while. I’m trying to avoid my sorority sisters.”
That was a request that I wouldn't refuse. I'm not even sure I could if I tried. I handed her my beer, and she backed off. Taking a gulp, then taking a seat on the edge of the bed.
I went to her, but paused, lowering myself to my knees and crossing my legs. She was looking down at me now, and for some reason that felt right.
Oh yeah, I'm in trouble with this woman. I won’t be able to let go, and I know my brothers will fight me for her.
But they better be prepared because I intend to fight back. Even if she brings me trouble.
