Peyton's word sounded like a different language.
'We race straight home, Tessa!' He barked.
I ignored him, continuing towards the Fox's building.
'I assure you, Tess, your boyfriend heard already. He can take care of himself!'
The sound of the battle grew louder, making it difficult to process what he just said. Although it sounded like he thought I was going to rescue Kevin. How laughable!
I was going into his house, alright. But only because I needed one thing, which sat untouched inside his closet.
'Tessa!'
At the sound of my name again, I glanced Peyton's direction. He seemed torn between coming after me and going straight to our quarters. Angie and Blake had also slowed down and looked confused.
'I need to pick up something,' I called back to Peyton. 'It's important.'
Scent blocker.
That was what I needed.
Four vials of it was inside Kevin's chamber. Whether he was fighting or avoiding this battle, he would not be in his room at a time like this. I was dead certain. I just needed to sneak in and out like I'd done for the last two years.
Wolves raced past as I stole behind trees and any covering that hid me well enough. I didn't smell like a warrior, so if they didn't see me, they wouldn't take me seriously. If only I could take the same chance and head for the borders, I wouldn't have to make this unpleasant detour to my ex's.
Some wolves ran past to join the battle. Others raced for cover. Some rushed towards the woods, perhaps to go help their loved ones who were on guard duty.
Soon, I entered the large building. The live-in maid zoomed past, shoving me aside. She knew as well as I did that those invader werewolves would definitely come to this particular side of the pack. They would enter this very building.
The sound of the battle grew closer still as I walked on silent paws through the hallway. My fear and determination were at equal levels. I chose to act on the latter.
My senses were scattered about, picking up whispered growls all around the house. Some were arguing. None of them was Kevin. I couldn't pick up his presence. That was a good thing.
Thank you, Goddess.
I doubted he was out fighting. All of the times he'd mentioned this battle, his opinion had been the same. According to him, Alpha Laz fNo! Goddess, please.
I roughly shoved the scattered clothes out of my way to find one near-empty bottle lying at the edge. It began to roll to the floor when I caught it. A few drops was still left.
Better than nothing.
I took it and slipped back out quietly.
I'd made it all the way to the hall leading to the servant's exit when a shadow emerged from down the hall. It was not an unfamiliar warrior like I feared. Neither was it Kevin.
Curtis?
His eyes were bright and he wore nothing but a pair of briefs, which meant he'd just shifted.
"Is this where you came to hide?" His voice was eerie. A little flirty.
I knew I was in trouble as he stalked towards me with fangs bared in a triumphant grin. Running was not an option. He would catch me for sure. I must fight back anyway I could.
Letting out my claws, I began to shift when he dove for me. He was much faster and stronger. Within moments, I laid pinned beneath him.
His large frame was as hard as steel, and I thought for sure my bones would crack.
"Get off me!"
I fought and writhed but only did more harm than good. Our naked skin was soon touching. His burned hot against mine. That was how I knew that the jacket I borrowed from Kevin's room no longer covered my flesh.
"I'll have you," he groaned as he pressed his lips to mine.
Then he bit my lower lip so hard that I tasted blood. I screamed. Or tried to.
He chuckled and bit again. I bled and healed, though the pain remained.
"That's for making me fight for it!" He teased.
I tried to shift but his weight crushed me like a bunch of rocks. I could barely breathe. I kicked and clawed while he healed too quickly.
"Oooh... nice..." He breathed against me. "Soft and wuuh!"
His hold loosened abruptly as his body slightly lifted off mine. The cold autumn air was so welcome on my skin. I snarled, pushing and fighting to rise on my feet. His eyes were wide and blazing with rage.
Snarling back viciously, he struggled against whoever had a hold on him.
It was an opportunity to dig my claws into his shoulders again. He was off me before I attempted another shove.
That was when the strange wolf came into my line of teary vision.
Large. His fur was the color of burgundy. So dark it could be mistaken for brown. They were either glossy or the light made them seem so.
He drove thick claws into Curtis as he groaned,
'Dishonorable filth!'
Curtis retaliated but he blocked it. The fight raged as I grappled with the jacket to cover myself and stand up at the same time.
The vial.
Where was it? I looked about. My eyes caught the shiny bottle a few feet away. It laid right below the two warriors in battle.
I shifted and dropped to my feet, stretching out my paws to reach for it.
Blood poured down, wetting my fur before I could slide the tiny bottle closer to me. Grabbing it between my teeth, I bolted for the exit.
A cry, mixed with a growl, pierced through all other noise, causing me to freeze.
I was too scared to check who was killing who, so I didn't turn around immediately. But on reaching the exit, from the corner of my eye, I sensed the wolf's eyes on me.
I turned around hesitantly while praying that the one who saved me had won the fight. A gasp of relief escaped me as our eyes met and locked.
The stranger stood tall over Curtis' lifeless form. Eyes that shone like freshly melted gold held mine like a spell. Blood dripped from his mouth down his chin and from his claws.
Not an ordinary warrior, my mind warned.
He oozed calm strength and authority. I was spellbound until he spoke.
'That was not your Chief Gamma or his Deputy. Have you seen those two?'
His voice brought to mind my favorite audio books. I shook my head.
He nodded, then said,
'Run, then!'
I took off as he raced after me.
