Tessa POV
Was this the same male who professed love and whispered all of those promises to me? Promises to protect me always. To love and uphold my honor as a female of the Night Storm. I'd been such a fool, Goddess!
"Don't look so traumatized, doll. It's either me or another wolf. That prick, Curtis, perhaps. But I'm sure you prefer me. Wanna know how I know? You told me so. You said you love me and couldn't wait to be properly mated.
Sad that I can't give you that. I am an elite Gamma wolf of this pack. No matter whose blood runs in your veins, you're still the daughter of a s*x servant. Granted, you'll be good for breeding, but not as a mate, no."
My stomach was turning as I watched him. It occured to me that this had always been his secret thoughts, which he hid from me. All those times, he only told me what I wanted to hear. I'd been blind and foolish.
"I can't believe this," I breathed.
"You better believe it. Oh, and newsflash, my mom found out sometime ago. Not today. Curtis, too, of course. Your bestie, Peyton? I'll bet one of my balls that he knows. We are out in the open, doll. Like you always wanted. Except I'm not your betrothed. I'm your Master!
Now I'll expect you to report to my bedroom at 5:30 tomorrow morning to do your duties to my family, got it?"
He stepped back, eyeing me from head to toe. Lust shone in his eyes.
I was horrified that he would touch me, but something beeped in his pocket, distracting him. It was his phone.
With no other word but a lecherous smile, he reached into his pocket. Then he frowned at the screen before turning around to leave.
I didn't get the chance to let all of his words sink in. Someone called out my name almost immediately.
"Tessa!" It was Peyton.
I jumped. Shame nearly overcame me when I thought he might have heard the painfully disgrace of a conversation.
"That's Kev, isn't it? Is everything okay?" He asked.
I searched his features to see any sign of pity. There was none. So I decided he didn't hear us.
Shaking myself, I schooled my face to hide all emotions. There would be time to feel bad later.
"Yeah no, of course, everything's fine," I babbled. "Where's Angie?"
The moon was waning. Fewer wolves would be out compared to other nights. We often came out to race and play at times like these. I had the heart to turn around, go to my room, hide myself and cry. But that was stupid.
Soon, Peyton and I met up with two of our other friends. I went behind a tree and shifted quickly, eager for the race. Not just to clear my mind. But to peek near the border and determine an escape route.
Us low-class pack members and omegas weren't allowed anywhere near those areas. Unless you got kicked out. We weren't allowed to race in certain places in the woods either.
Still, I resolved to go as far as I could, hoping to see if there was any way to get out of this place for good.
My twin had a scent blocker when she escaped. I needed to get my hands on that too. There was nothing here for me anymore.
I raced far from my friends with my eyes and senses noting all around. I was close to the border when a loud cry made me skid to a stop.
My heart jolted in my chest. My eyes followed the direction of the sound in the darkness while I took cover between thick shrubs. What I saw sent a chill through me.
A bright grey, massive Alpha wolf. He had three warriors of the Night Storm beneath large, vicious claws of his front and hind paws.
The guards tried to avoid him but couldn't. They were under the spell of our Alpha’s command, so they stood whimpering, afraid to attack. The visiting Alpha seemed more interested in the bigger warriors racing towards him.
He was not alone. Giant wolves dropped from a small aeroplane overhead. Their eyes shone in the darkness like tiny, lighted bombs.
The scene felt like an apocalypse. Spellbinding and terrifying.
The Night Storm was under attack. This was the battle the warriors have been training for. It had to be. This was the reason Kevin was away all the time since the last full moon.
Our warriors were meant to attack the Forest Moon first. Apparently, they were too slow. The cruel and vicious Alpha Nickolas Reign had brought the battle to our lands.
His friends raced beside him. A blonde werewolf and two others with furs the color of near-darkness. Other wolves dropped from the plane too, shifting in mid-air before they landed.
Growls and barks rose all around. I stumbled, turning around to race back home to the safety of the servants' street. Maybe to warn Kevin or the first warrior I encounter. My friends had seen the battle too and were racing home.
Fear replaced all feelings of hurt and heartbreak at that moment. I was unsure what these attackers would do if they caught our scent. The one thing I knew of the Forest Moon was this: Ruthless Alpha, ruthless wolves.
'Straight home,' Peyton called out to Angie, Blake and I.
Perhaps he meant the message for me alone. He feared I might want to warn Kevin.
The servants' premises were the safest place. Warriors wouldn't attack helpless civilians. Especially judging from how the Alpha avoided those fearful guards. Oh, but I'd heard scary stories of how some use opportunities like these to rape and capture the females and the weak.
I raced without stopping or looking back till I reached the spot where Kevin and I had the heart-shattering talk earlier. My steps slowed involuntarily as a thought took shape in my mind.
The border was open this very minute. Indeed, a battle was raging. But would this chance ever come again after today? Goddess was answering my prayer to escape the pack right now.
Whether Alpha Lazarus lived or died tonight, whether the pack stood or fell, my goal remained the same. I must leave the Night Storm.
I didn't realize I'd changed directions until Peyton cried into my mind.
'Tessa, what are you doing? Straight home!"
