Chapter Three The R T Somewhere in the Old West, where the sky goes on for miles and mountains rise like phantoms in this stark landscape, sits Slave Ranch, an anomaly in modern times, though, to be sure, there’s not much evidence that its main purpose mimics anything from the 19th or 20th centuries either. Unique unto itself, the stables, pastures, paddocks and the old ranch house look innocuous from a distance – which is all the look a casual observer is going to get. Even close up the ranch hardly appears to be forbidding territory. And yet, there are clues that something unusual takes place insides its boundaries. Something that keeps outsiders at a distance.
