Chapter 5: Ezio

The omega's cute button nose scrunched distastefully when she accepted the flask, likely because she smelled the strong fragrance of liquor. I smiled at her innocently, though my intentions were far from it. My wolf had not yet forgotten Alistair's words, and I shared its deep contempt regarding our pack lead's decision. As his advisor, I needed to stay objective with how I view things. I couldn't let trivial emotions cloud my judgment, even if it concerned the bond and fated mates. "Take a sip and swallow it quickly. It may taste bitter at first, but you'll get used to it," I pushed the omega, who was still staring at the flask. When she refused to make a move, I tried looking at our situation from her point of view. It didn't take a genius to deduce she must have been abused for a long time. The last thing she would do was to openly accept unknown liquids from strangers... ...except if I could use the bond in my favor. I smiled inwardly and thanked Alistair for giving me the idea. Leaning closer, I let my scent envelop her, and satisfaction coursed through me as I saw her pupils dilate. I purred, low and long, and whispered. "Please, Violet? Just a sip." Speaking her name gave the desired effect, and although she hesitated for a moment, she eventually closed her eyes and tipped up the flask. She was a bit clumsy, and liquid dribbled down her chin. My eyes tracked the path of the spilled liquor from her jaw down to her porcelain neck. Scars mottled her skin, but their silver marks kind of worked with her beauty, like a canvas painted in painful strokes. It slid down to her chest, disappearing on the neckline of her blouse, and I had to consciously stop myself from giving a lingering look. "Not bad, ain't it?" The omega shook her head, and I retrieved the flask from her and took a sip again. We continued exchanging the liquor between us while I tried to distract her with mundane talk. It wasn't long until she was swaying in her seat. Alistair prohibited us from questioning her down the lockers. However, if we actually did, I'd only just scare her a bit until she spoke. I do have my morals. But since I was out of options and needed her gone before our Don formally made her a pack member, I had to get information from her, stat. People tend to have loose tongues when they get drunk, and I'm sure she wasn't any different. And it was true. Liquor usually gives us liquid courage. Maybe if she's drunk enough, she could talk about her memories no matter how morbid they were. I paused briefly, thinking about what I should ask first, and settled for the easiest. "Who is the Shadow?" The omega, startled by the sudden change of topic, pursed her lips and reached for her notepad. I stopped her before she could start writing. "Let's try to speak, yeah?" She stared at me, her eyes blurring periodically, then looked away. Hmp, fine, I thought. We'd get there eventually. I sat back again and gestured for her to continue. 'He visits me from time to time. He is the only one I know from the dark room.' I read her note and raised my eyebrow. "You didn't talk or see anyone else other than him?" 'Only him.' Interesting. "What is he like?" It took a while before she finished her response on the notepad. 'I don't know what he looks like, but his eyes glow yellow, and he has a deep voice.' At the bottom, there were several erasures on the paper, as if she debated how to write her answer. 'He took care of me.' Those words surprised me since she was covered with scars. "You don't look well-taken care." The omega looked down and traced a long, healed cut on her arm. It was pinkish compared to the rest, a recent wound. 'He kept me alive.' I couldn't exactly argue with that 'cause it was true. I tapped my fingers on the bench's backrest, the rhythmic sound grounding me, while I looked at the omega. "Do you know why he kept you captive?" Her answer was faster this time. 'He said that we are doing a good thing. He said that my sacrifice would be the answer to a problem that had plagued everyone for a long time.' The words of a madman, no doubt. She looked so certain with her answer, and I just knew our little killer probably used it as propaganda to make her obey him. Surviving day-to-day sounds better when you're filled with delusions, especially if it's about being a hero. From the looks of it, the omega was the one who needed saving, not the other way around. "What does he mean by -" Before I could finish my question, she swayed from her seat and almost toppled to the ground. I had to quickly move forward and catch her before her face hit the cobbled stones. "Violet?" But the omega was already snoozing. I cursed the skies and stared back at the flask. Was it too strong for her? I tried shaking her to wake her up, but she was out cold. Growling, I kneeled, put my arms under her knees and back, and carried her. "Let's get you inside." The walk from the garden to the mansion was the longest I ever had. It wasn't tiring to carry her since she was so light, but with her body pressed close to me and her head on my shoulder, it was very distracting. Her scent, a mixture of vanilla and something sweet, was starting to drive my wolf crazy. I was too busy breathing through my mouth and arranging my thoughts that I didn't realize I had brought us to my room by muscle memory. Looking side by side, I checked first that the hall was empty before carrying her inside. I didn't care if people talked. We were mates, for f**k's sake, even if I didn't want it. But if word gets to Alistair... The omega burrowed deep into the blankets after I quickly deposited her on my bed. I'd just leave her be until she wakes up, then by the goddess' blessing, I hoped she had enough common sense to get the f**k out of my room. She'd be gone, then, when I get back. Yep, that's the ideal scenario I was manifesting. But all those wishes were crushed when I turned around and suddenly saw Marku shifted into his wolf form in my f*****g doorway.
