CHAPTER 11

I heard a gasp. I looked at her and found that she had pushed a fruit knife in her stomach. I was shocked. I held her face and asked, "Jessie, what is all this? Why did you do this?" "Because a woman's natural duty is reproduction. If I can't become a mother, then there's no need for me to be alive. I should die. Moreover, you deserve better than a barren wom-" She couldn't complete the next words because she went unconscious. No, how can she say this? I tried applying pressure on her wound and scooped her, taking her to the car. "Saab, ye kya hua madam ko? Abhi toh thik thi," Ganpat, our driver asked after seeing Jessie. (Sir, what happened to madam. She was fine till now." "Khade khade dekh kya rahe ho? Chalo, aspataal jaana hai. Gaadi nikaalo." (What are you doing standing there? Come on, we have to go to the hospital. Drive the car." "Ji Saab,"Ganpat said looking at Jessica with widened eyes. (Yes sir.) We were living in the farmhouse. So, it took us an hour to reach the nearest hospital, which was the same in which I got the horrifying result. Once there, I didn't wait for the stretcher and again scooped Jessie, careful not to deepen the wound, nor removing the knife or it will lead to more blood loss. "Doctor, please help her. She tried committing suicide." "Yes, yes. We're are taking her to the OT because her wound is deep. We have to apply some stitches. Kamlesh, bring the stretcher." Then, Kamlesh, the peon, brought a stretcher and I carefully kept Jessie there. They started taking her to the OT. She was looking so pale, so... fragile... Seeing her lifeless body, I felt as if I couldn't breath... I couldn't protect my love... It took half an hour for the doctor to come out once again. "Doctor, what happened? How is the operation progressing?" "She has lost a lot of blood. Do you know her blood group?" "B+. I have the same blood group. Please, if you want, take my blood." "Well, there is no need for that. We have B+ blood. Just think according to your blood group. Nothing will happen to her. Be positive." I nodded frantically. After the doctor again went inside, I broke down. Is this what Jessie thought? Did she think that I will not take care for her if she was barren? "Saab, Shanta bhi aa gayi," Ganpat spoke from beside me. I couldn't see anything due to my tears. I was crying frantically. (Sir, Shanta is also here.) "Saab, humko ye toh batiye ki memsaab ko hua kya hai. Humko kuch pataa hi nahi hai. Aur shayad aapka mann bhi halka ho jaaye," Shanta pleaded. (Sir, at least tell us what happened to the madam. We don't know anything. And maybe you will feel better after sharing your problems...) I told them that my wife is barren and she tried committing suicide. They were very shocked... "Saab, aap bahut naseebwaale ho ki aapko memsaab jaisi biwi milli. Aur upar se memsaab bhi nassebwaali hai ki unko aapke jaisa pati milla," Shanta said, confusing me. (Sir, you are very lucky that you got our madam as your wife and moreover madam is also lucky that she got a husband like you.) "Aisa kyu keh rahi ho?" (Why are you saying things like these?) "Saab, memsaab ko ek minute nahi lagaa jaan dene ka phaisla lene ko kyuki unko pataa tha ki agar vo aapse kitna bhi baat karey toh bhi aap unko chhodogey nahi. Aur aapko ek bhi minute nahi lagaa memsaab ko yahaa laaney ka phaisla lene ke liye. Jab ki agar koi aur mard hota jo apni biwi se pyar nahi karta aur sirf apne hawas ke liye usse shaadi karta toh vo sochta ki iska aur koi kaam nahi hai. Ye toh bachche bhi paida nahi kar paayegi... Anaath bhi hai. Yahi pe kahi toh gaad dete hain. Hamaare farmhouse ke pass toh itni jamin hai. Kisi ko pataa bhi nahi chalegaa. Lekin nahi. Aap inse bahut pyaar kartey hain aur inka saath kabhi nahi chhodogey ye vaada aapne unse kiya tha aur vo aap nibha rahe ho." (Sir, madam didn't need a minute to take the decision to end her life because she knew that although she will talk with you many times, but you will never leave her. And you didn't take a minute to decide that you should take her here. If there would be another man in your shoes who didn't love his wife and was using her for his needs, he would think that she is useless. She can't even give birth... She is even an orphan. I should bury her here somewhere. We have so much land near our farmhouse. No one will even know it. But no. You promised that you will love her and will never leave her and you are fulfilling that.) Her words brought more tears to my eyes. Yes, I love her, so much that I can't live without her. I will never leave her. Just then, the bulb of the OT turned off which indicated that the operation has been completed. The doctor came out. "Doctor, what happened?" I asked the doctor frantically. "The operation has been successful. But her condition is critical and her brain couldn't get enough blood. If she doesn't wake up in 24 hours, there are chances that she slips in coma..."
