Surprise

“Yes, I am almost at my apartment,” Sarah said with a wide smile plastered on her face. "Get ready, we are waiting for you," Her friend Seema said  “Yea, yea...consider me on the way, ok?” and stopped for a moment to lessen her heartbeat. She had been waiting for this day for months now. And, now it was finally here. She was beyond excited to try on her new dress because tonight she had to look her best. But the moment she opened her door she couldn’t help widen her eyes. “Hey, you are home early?” It came more like a gasp from Sarah’s mouth. Her boyfriend Adam Cross was home early and seemed busy on the screen. It seems he didn't take notice of her until he didn’t ask. “But why are…you late?” He didn’t stray his eyes from his laptop. His voice was nonchalant but when he didn’t receive any response he had to look at Sarah. Only to make Sarah awe a little whenever she looks into his green emerald eyes. She wonders if she will ever stop being affected by his looks. But when he is in his dress shirt with a tie knotted right in the middle of his wide shoulders she can always forget to respond. “I…” She trailed off and no matter how hard she tried she couldn’t come up with any excuses. “You are doing overtime again?” He asked making her sigh. “Yea,…and, I thought…” She wanted to cover it more. “Come here,…” Adam got his eyes back to the screen but had his hand out for her to join him. Getting her purse on the kitchen counter on the way she walked to him and following his gesture ended up on his lap. His perfume made her mind hazy. She could literally feel her heart flutter finding him this close. She closed her eyes the moment she get to kiss Adam’s sweet thin mouth. His large hand was holding her head and getting her down as he deepened the kiss. “Is my little Sarah growing up?” She smiled feeling his hand on her thigh and got his laptop away to get his full attention. “I am all grown up, Adam. And, you know that already.” Looking into his eyes makes her want to cancel all the plans just to stay the same here. Adam looked into her brown orbs before Sarah’s luscious mouth got his attention again. She could really stir him and make wonderful meals. He pressed his mouth against her forehead before he said, “It is good how you are learning that we need to work to get things in life…” Sarah’s mouth curling up got him to pause and he held her face before he added. “…And, I want a lot from this life.” Sarah smiled looking at him and leaned in to kiss his jaw. “I know you will get everything. You are the most genius…and,…dedicated person I have ever met…” She could have said more but could feel his tension at this point. Getting her fingers on his tie knot she got it loose. “Want me to set you dinner?” “Sometimes you creep me out for knowing me this good.” In a swift move, she got up and was about to go as she said, “Can you stop working? Go and freshen up while I set…” “Sarah…listen?” Adam said and she turned to look at him. “I…like this new you. Being serious about your job and then…this overtime. Let me do one thing…if you want any investment advice I will do it free for you.” She laughed a little wondering how he would react knowing the real reason behind her overtime these past six months. “Ok…” She barely managed to not laugh and walked away. Adam too noticed something else but brushed it off before he looked at the screen where a huge mansion was being viewed. He looked at Sarah before looking at the mansion. He knew she will go crazy looking at something like this. Growing up with Sarah he always knew she could settle for anything. If anything they were polar opposites all this time but as he suspected it was only her young age because now this new Sarah was trying to grow beside him. Adam Cross was nineteen but had been making money since he could manage. Not that his single mother couldn’t provide for him. His mother, Carol was a lecturer in a famous college. His dad had always been his drive. He had to be more successful than him to show him what he could be. And, there was nothing stopping him. Sarah grew up beside his home. He too can’t recall since when everybody knew that she loves him but it had been this way always. And, though he had dated different people and avoided Sarah at all costs growing up, the moment she too moved to New York City without any plans only to stay close to him did the trick somehow. He had to tell her that he loves her at that point. And, why not? She was beautiful, young, and knew how to make good pasta. He wasn’t interested in anyone at that moment. In the past, he thought Jennifer was the one for him but she was a party girl and he had to break up with her in four months. And, Ana had such a huge family and would always make it compelling for him to attend events with her. In two months, he had already had two breakups in New York City. And, after two months, Sarah came.  His elder sister, Karen and his mom called him to make sure she doesn’t get into trouble. He wasn’t in the mood to babysit her but his mom had given her permission to use the apartment they own here. Ignoring her was even a task in the past too, given how beautiful she was. Even if she wasn’t she had this power to look amazing all the time. Her dress was always great, her hair was always made and lipstick to the point.  Having a physician mother who always gave her money to spend had her pampered all this time. And, this time around it felt that there was really no point in breaking Sarah’s heart too. She acted big enough to deal with him. He gave it a try wondering for how long it will work. But this Sarah? He didn’t see it coming. She was always cautious enough and Adam Cross who could be irked at literally anything didn't snap in months. That too on a girl he calls his girlfriend. It was as if she knew everything about him. She was really turning into something he would want in his life forever. Six months ago when he managed to break some deal in real estate and got his net worth to two million dollars had been making Sarah act completely different. She had stopped whining about Adam’s working hours and even now seen doing overtime herself too. “Dinner’s ready,” Sarah called for him and he smiled looking at her. If this kept going,…with a partner like Sarah…he was on the way to becoming one of the most successful men in the world. And, there was no stopping him. He was about to get to the table when he got a call from his sister. “Hey, what’s up?” He picked up and smiled at seeing Sarah shaking her head. “Why you haven’t changed?” Sarah asked but ignoring her Adam listened to his sister saying, “I am here in New York…” “Really? What’s up? For…” And, before he could continue he found, “I know you are always busy and must be at your office but I have met a little accident. I am fine and at Roma’s place but…” “Where is this?” Adam asked and the moment she mentioned the street he had already started leaving. Looking at him going away she shook her head. She wondered why Karen took this long to call and ran to change her dress. Her Uber too was already waiting and she pulled the car at the backside of her colleague’s home and got in. “Is he here?” She cried out squealing but her friend Seema was quick to add. “Not yet,…” Sarah didn’t let her complete and cried out seeing Adam’s mom. “How are you!” Throwing her arms around her neck she hugged her tight. “I am fine!...” Carol, Adam’s mother said and pulled away to add, “But look at you! You look fabulous in this dress. Just look at her Karen…she is still the same. Crazy for Adam.” “But your boy has changed a lot. Now…he is all mine.” Sarah said all excited. “Girl! He gave me nightmares thinking if I am enough to be his mom. He is all yours if you can deal with him.” Sarah laughed before she got busy sharing hugs with Adam’s friends. “What you guys were doing? He was home earlier?” His friend George raised his hands. “That’s not on me. I was my usual self...trying to get off. Maybe he wanted to spend his midnight birthday with you.” And, before they could talk more her friend Seema came to whisper shout. “Guys! He is here.” Biting her mouth hard Sarah tried to make no sound when he entered, “Why it’s dark here?” Adam asked Seema only for all of them to jump while Seema switched on the lights. “Happy Birthday!” Adam seemed taken aback but the moment his eyes fell on Sarah he shook his head in disappointment. Sarah almost ran to him throwing her arms around his neck and whispered. “I love you,” Adam smiled looking at his mom and got his hands on Sarah’s waist to pull away. Waiting for your comments. Please keep them coming.
