“Let me raise this glass for my lovely Sarah. If it wasn’t for her…” Ms Cross stopped for a moment to shut her eyes to gain focus. She had taken more drinks than she allowed herself in usual. “…I would haven’t been able to celebrate this day. It is after three years that he is cutting his birthday cake…my lovely busy boy…I love you, Adam…I love you so much, darling.” She was slurring to the end.
“Aww,….Thank you, Carol. You don’t worry…you will always be a part of this day.” Sarah replied and Adam’s eyes darted to Sarah before he looked at his hand that Sarah came to hold on the table.
He wonder why she would do this. Why she wouldn’t respect his boundaries? And, as if it was not enough he could hear Karen whispering. “Has he proposed you? I mean he is more than settled now. Now is a perfect time. And, promise me you will tell me the moment he will propose you.” And, the moment Sarah giggled was like a blow to his guts.
Getting home back Sarah could sense the tension in his jaw. Of course, she knew that he didn’t like to party but it was his birthday, right? And, who won’t be happy after seeing their mother after months? “Umm…you don’t want to know what I bought you?...” A smirk followed her question and she rolled her eyes. “...come on, Adam…we will see who will be laughing after seeing my gift.” Saying this she turned around and got a pink wrapped square box.
“Let me show you,” Her hands were focused on getting the wrapper off before she opened the box and showed him. His smile shrank before he narrowed his eyes. An expensive Patek Philippe watch was staring at him. “Is this real?” He asked and she nodded vehemently. “Yes,…” She curled her mouth up when she found him pulling his car. Was he going to kiss her?
“How? Is…why?” He asked,
“For what you think I was working overtime and doing a job! Of course, to throw this party and for your watch. Now, you will wear this one.” She pressed her mouth excited and finally giggled when she found him getting his eyes off the watch.
“Sarah! Let’s break up.” She literally jumped up given how loud he was at the end but then got confused.
“Wh…what? Adam?”
“I don’t see myself with a stupid like you anymore. Enough is enough.” He hit the staring wheel making her eyes blink.
“Adam…what’s wrong…I…”
“Who would spend their six months of worth on a stupid birthday party and a watch! You…you are…No!”
“What are you saying? I thought…I thought I should work to get you something that is worthy of you…Adam…Adam, tell me…you didn’t mean it.” She got her hand on his wrist and tried to pull his hand to her when he jerked that hand away.
“You are so short-sighted…and, you don’t mean Sarah. From this moment, on…let’s end this. You don’t mean a thing for me now.”
“Adam…you are kidding, right? You can’t be dumping me for this. I can’t…I can’t get you. You are kidding, right?”
“Because you can’t get me, Sarah. You are an i***t. And, only an i***t would like to spend his life with you.” His words were cutting her deep. He seemed serious. All of this was really happening.
“What?” She whispered not really grasping from where it’s coming. What did she do?
“Get out of my car, Now!” She blinked for a moment before she looked at the door. But then inhaling sharp she looked at him again.
“Adam…I live with you! And,…”
“Out!” This time her hands worked to get the door and she steps out. Her lower lip shook violently before she bit it and tried to have her emotions in check.
“Living with me doesn’t mean I should drive you…come home and get your stuff now,” Adam shouted while she only blinked looking at him as he went away. Recalling how she forgot to get her purse she had to walk to their apartment.
She sighed in relief when she didn’t find the password lock changed but getting in got her heart sinking. Almost all of her stuff was lying around and in a second Adam came out getting more of her jeans out.
“Get them,…you don’t really have time.” But her feet only followed him.
“Adam…what…I know you don’t like to waste your time or…Adam…you know I love you. I love you so much…” She said all the while getting into the room only to gasp a little when his chest was all she could see.
“I told you I don’t have time for love! I have goals, Sarah. And, a girl who can literally use her six months of worth for a gift…doesn’t qualify.” She wonders why he has to do this. This is so stupid. She did it all for him, right?
“I did it for you,...” Her voice cracked at the end but his eyes remained full of arrogance. As if he was looking at someone so worthless. “…Adam…I won’t do such a thing for anyone. You know that, right? I…I just wanted to give you something you would like to wear…Adam…you were successful and I wanted to give you something that would…”
“Pack your stuff. Or next, I will throw them out of that window.” She hiccupped when he held her arm to push her away.
“Adam...”
“Leave…” He shouted making her cower before she started gathering her things. And, seeing her packing almost half of her stuff he went inside their bedroom and she jumped a little with that loud thud.
No, he…he can’t leave me. I…we are made for each other, right? He…he is only tired after a long day. I…I should haven’t thrown that party for him but then holding her mouth she hiccupped. It still didn’t make sense. What was she supposed to tell anyone? That she was dumped for buying an expensive gift for her boyfriend.
She looked at the bedroom door that was hers too a few hours ago. Dragging her two bags she called for a cab and left. It seemed like the same day when she first came to live here. He didn’t let her in but then later on agreed.
“Sarah, Darling he isn’t for you. He is trouble. He doesn’t want a girl like you with love. He is…I don’t know how to tell…crazy.” Her friend Seema told her but all she could recall was the first time when they kissed near the bathroom door that morning.
“…you tell me. Can you do the same with him? Throwing him out of your home? No, because you love him. That motha…” She did hear what Seema told her but only lay motionless on her couch. Only the possibility that he never loved her was enough to shake her.
“No,…no, no, no,…” Her weak voice followed, “…Seema, you don’t know he is like this. He…is so…I remember the time he had his exams going on. He fought with Karen for her loud music…he…he…it was my mistake. I could sense he was…tense. I should haven’t shown him my gift. I…do you think I should apologize...” She asked in the end finally lifting her head to look at her friend.
“…Will saying sorry be enough? Should I make a card for him?” Sarah asked,
“Sarah…are you even listening to yourself? You are…you are so young, honey. Do not waste yourself…you even gave him your innocence. He knows that right? And,…Sarah, from what I have known him. He won’t listen to whatever you have to say. I have met him. And, even if I haven’t met him. Guys at this age…aren’t looking for someone to marry…I mean this is what you had been dreaming all this time, right?” Sarah looked at her friend shaking her head and tried to speak only to break into sobs.
“I…that…I only started thinking about marriage when he bought another apartment. And,…he…he too said that he would love to live with me in a mansion. He…he mentioned spending his whole life with me, Seema.”
“It seems he has changed his plans.” And, this time she didn’t like Seema’s voice even a little bit.
“You don’t know him.” Sarah groaned louder this time.
“A freak who dumped his girlfriend for buying an expensive gift? I can’t believe it. I can’t imagine how everyone is going to react on this.” And, this made Sarah sink even more. She was literally moments away from being a laughing stock.
“No, it’s wasn’t because of that expensive gift. It’s because he thinks I am stupid for using my six months of income recklessly. It’s different.”
“It’s not...” Seema snapped, “...and, who is he to tell you what to do with your money? And, why it is always the money with him? It was your money. You earned it…look…I am getting late. We will talk about it later. Are you sure you want to miss your office today?” Seema asked making Sarah shrug her shoulders.
“I will stay,…” She tried to keep her answer short. But in real…she didn’t feel like continuing this job anymore.
“Don’t you dare call him? I am coming from experience. It is your first break up honey. In three years, you will get used to it.” Seema said getting into her coat before she left.
Sarah doesn’t know why but only imaging what everyone will be thinking about her break up with Adam had her thinking. And, the moment she was recalled how he is used to jumping from one relationship to another she trembled. She tried to look for her phone and called for him the moment she located it on the table in the kitchen.
The line didn’t get through but she kept on trying and left voicemails. In the evening when Seema returned she was quick to say,
“Seema, I am going to look for him. I have to talk to him.”
“Are you crazy? What if he hurt you?” Seema yelled after her.
“He won’t. Ok? What…what do you think Adam is? Seema…he is my one true love. I…can’t lose when I am so close…forget about it. You won’t get it.” The cool air brushed her cheeks. She had her hair in loose curls just like Adam liked. It was still his birthday and she couldn’t miss on to be there for him.
She entered the password but it was changed. Her heart broke a little. Was it really happening?
No, no, no, no,…She felt suffocated all of a sudden.
…this doesn’t happen in the end. The endings are good. I got my happily ever after months ago. I…can’t be here. I can’t be clumsy enough to lose my prince right out of my fingers.
She wanted to apologize to him but didn’t know what words would bring him back to her. She wondered how he can’t see how much she loves him.
Flashback
She was eleven when among her friends she didn’t have any plan for her future. And, when she was asked what are her plans she was quick to tell.
“I want to be happy…I want to celebrate every day.”
“That’s great. I…hope it works for you,” Her teacher replied and coming back home when she told her mom she was quick to respond.
“No way, you said it. What about being a painter?” Her mother Judith asked and Sarah smiled,
“I forgot about it.” She replied back only for Carol to add. “Your daughter is so much fun-loving. She is filled with excitement all the time. I wish Adam can have only one per cent of her.”
“No, don’t say anything about him. He is serious about his goals. I mean who doesn’t want a child like Adam. I wish one day I can see Sarah worrying about her tests this much.”
And, when she talked about this conversation with her friend Gloria the next day. She was quick to point out. “I think you two should date then. He can learn about fun from you and you will have some goals too in life.”
“Wake up!” Sarah was startled but found a sheriff waking her up.
“Excuse me,” She asked and looked around to notice how she slept right in the lobby waiting for him.
“We have a complaint against you, Ms Sarah. And, it will be great if you can leave from here. And, don’t disturb him. It also includes not calling him or trying to see him without his permission.” She heard and got her eyes narrowed.
“What…what are you talking about? You are not making any sense. I…I have to talk to him. He…he is my boyfriend.”
“Yes, I know…but ex…don’t stalk him…or we have to take more strict measures.” The officer replied making her look for the door.
“What?...” She whispered and got up slowly looking at the door. “…Adam!” She yelled knocking at the door. Only for one of the officers to hold her back.
After coming back to Seema’s place she sat on the couch. It was three in the morning and she couldn’t think of any way to reach Adam. He had blocked her number and now had a restraining order against her. All of her dreams roamed in front of her. Only three days ago she was confirming Karen and Carol’s flight. She even sponsored their tickets to be at his birthday. All she wanted to do was to make the occasion memorable for him.
Was it really so stupid of me? She wonders. Of course, she had dreams too. She wanted to own good shoes or a bag. But she wanted Adam to think about her. Was it really asking for too much?
Her head could explode at any moment. Only for once, if she could only see him for once she was sure she could manage to get him back.
“Are you still up?” Hearing Seema’s voice she rubbed her tears away but Seema managed to switch on the light. “Come on, Sarah. Everybody would want a girlfriend like you. You are...an amazing girl!” This made Sarah even more disappointed.
She knew she was stupid and anybody would want a girlfriend like her. But Adam was different. She always knew she was safe with him. He was so good to lose.
“You won’t…get it, Seema. I love him. I…I think I will die at any moment. I don’t know what to do…” But then she looked at Seema. “...can you talk to him? Please…I don’t want to get Karen involved. I know Adam will be even madder if I did. But you can talk to him. Right?”
“No, I won’t talk to him. I might have more breaks ups than you. But it doesn’t mean I don’t know how it hurts. And, girl! I would never do one thing. And, that is begging for love…if he doesn’t want you. He can f**k himself.”
Somewhere Sarah was still convinced that Seema can’t feel her pain. And, it was as if her prayers were heard she got a call. “Who is calling you at this hour?” Seema said picking her phone from the table.
“It’s Karen…I am sure he told his family about…” Rubbing her tears away she got the phone from Seema’s hand and slid it to pick.
“Hello,” Her voice was cracking but Karen didn’t seem to take notice of it when she said, “Sarah…I need to talk to Adam. Mom isn’t alright.”
“I…I…” She wonders what she was supposed to tell her but then she found herself asking, “…what’s wrong? Karen? Karen?...” Karen seemed hysterical on the other side.
“Hello…this is me, Molly. Sarah? I think you should come with Adam. Carol had a heart attack. Doctors aren’t hopeful.”
“I am coming. Don’t you worry, ok? And,…” She made her way to her room as she said, “…take care of Karen, ok?... Seema?” She shouted after cutting the call and stuffed her shorts in her bag.
“What? Is everything alright?”
“Give me your cellphone,” She said but got Seema’s phone from her hand before Seema could react.
“What are you doing?” Seema asked but Sarah typed Adam’s number and waited with a pounding heart.
“Hello,” Adam groaned and she inhaled sharply for a moment before she whispered,
“Carol isn’t alright. Adam…it’s me. Sarah…”
