The one that got away

“Hello, how can I help you?” Sarah opened the door to two strangers and had the apron on as she was baking and cleaning. “Hi, I am Jones. Is this Dawson’s home?” The one with the height asked making Sarah smile, “Yea…” “We are his friends. He said we can come over on weekend.” Sarah chuckled giving them the way all the time calling, “Honey, you got visitors.” She already knew Max was friendly. He loved knowing more people and love to spend time talking. Sarah walked away seeing the two men taking the seat on the sofas. She walked into the bedroom where Max had his pout on. Sarah looked at the laundry he was sorting and asked, "What?" Max got up slowly rubbing the back of his neck. “I am so sorry…that totally skip me. I forgot I invited them. The laundry is still on me.” Max whispered the last part lowly as he passed Sarah but she was quick to hold his wrist. “Don’t worry about it. I will set you three something good.” Max looked into her eyes for a moment before he smooched his mouth over her. “You are the best thing in the world.” The speakers were blazing with their soccer match when Sarah served the snacks and dinner for them. In the meantime, she got a call from her mom that she had to go outside to attend. “Hello, mom,” The cold wind hit her. “Hey honey,…how are you doing? I am so sorry I couldn’t manage to come for your home warming but I will try to be at Max’s birthday.” “I understand mom, believe me…sometimes I wonder how you are doing everything at the foundation?” “Oh about that…I have given your previous position to Seema.” Sarah nodded her head in agreement. “I think she suits it well,” “Well, where is Max? Give him the phone I…” “Mom we have guests over. Can I talk to you later?” “Guests on the weekend? You never cater for anyone at weekend.” Her mom pointed, “Mom, you know Max…he is this lovely magnetic. He had made friends here already,” And, this made her mom laugh. “You sound like his mother.” Sarah smiled looking back at the door and whispered, “I will call you later,” before hanging up. They bid the men farewell at two in the morning and Max was quick to glee. "They were not believing their eyes looking at our sound system..." "I don't think there is anything awesome about our sound system?" Sarah replied yawning. "Are you for real? I spent a lot on this one. These are the best...the best...like you are the best...the best wife in the world." Sarah shook her head smiling. "Ok, Max...I think now I can understand." She said but gasped when he pulled her in his arms to kiss her hard. And, his friends were home on the weekdays too. Sometimes Sarah does suspect that they are here for free beer or food but didn’t voice her thoughts to Max. He always enjoyed being surrounded. Max’s birthday was in two weeks and Sarah couldn’t help but recall how it was Adam’s birthday too on the same day. That very same day she got heartbroken and was thrown out of the house she thought she was making. For the last eleven years, she would always spend this day trying not to see anyone who knew about her most embarrassing day. It was only two weeks before her own husband’s birthday and she hadn’t done anything. And, it was not the first time when she was wondering if she was fair enough with Max. The thought of how she would have done a lot of things if it was Adam never left her mind. She wanted to admit that she was over Adam and was blessed with Max. But the horror of her past had stopped her from making anyone important enough to diminish her own existence. She had been there in the past and only she knew how she had collected her pieces to make something out of it. But this question of whether it was fair with Max always lingers. Today she got home only to find there was no dinner. “Max!” She called for her husband knowing he must be home at this point. She had messaged Max how she would be late but didn’t expect him to leave too for somewhere. She got into her room only to be taken aback by the décor of the room. “Max?” She raised her brows finding him on his one knee with a red rose in his mouth. “Wha…” The first thing that got into her mind was the money he spent on the cake. It seemed expensive. He had been very careful with the spending in the last few weeks but that made her recall how she shouldn’t judge his efforts. “That’s all for you.” He replied as Sarah looked at the candles and red balloons in the room. “Thank you,” She walked to him slowly and smiled when Max got up to pull her close. She got her cheek on his chest and gulped. “But what’s the occasion…I thought you…” “Shh…uhh…as for the arrangement. I used your card but…I have every reason to do so,” Sarah smiled a little nodding her head. “That must be good,” Sarah replied, “I…didn’t tell you but I got a reply from a firm…and, just today I had cleared everything and will be joining tomorrow as customer support. It's...forty dollars per hour honey…can you believe it?” Sarah pulled away to look at him and Max nodded his head to affirm whatever she was listening to was true. “Woah…oh my god,” Sarah jumped to hug him tight and got her eyes teary feeling Max hugging her back even stronger. “Sarah…I love you. I love you so damn much,” Max pulled away when she started sobbing. “No, no, no, no,…you are not doing it tonight. And, why are you in these boring blazers? I got a dress ready for you.” She smiled getting on the bed and removed her shoes all the while seeing Max getting a dress out. She looked at the small table where he had a cake and dinner ready in their room. Even the AC was at the temperature that she prefers. She looked at her man and had her heart swell. And, at that moment she knew she had to throw him the best birthday party. The next day, she got out with one of her colleagues to buy an expensive watch. And, though she had decided to buy a Rolex her eyes got plastered to a Patek Philippe. She fisted her hands and tried to fake a smile when her friend too suggested to buy the Patek. For a moment, she didn’t want to buy it but then something whispered in her that this time she was buying it for the right person. “You are right, Cindy. I will buy this one.” And, for a part, she was happy. It was like today she proved how she won’t be affected by anything about her past. She wonders if at one point she can talk to Max about Adam or how it affected her greatly but then shook the thought knowing he doesn’t deserve to get any of his day ruined and as for Adam, he was only a thing in the past now. Her past. And, it didn’t matter. She called her new found friends to invite them. And, jones was even ready to be the part of the preparations. She invited his old friends too and friends brought the girlfriends too while three of them were married and brought their wives. They were twenty in total guests and they wanted it to really be a surprise. Sarah had already wished him a birthday at the night and told him they will have a good dinner at their place to celebrate in the evening. She wanted Max to be taken aback and was really looking forward to the moment he will see his friends. Because if one thing he loved the most, was to spend time with his friends. Jones brother who was also Max's friend called him for a drink in the afternoon and was responsible to hold him as much as he can manage so everybody else could gather. At seven in the evening his friend called Sarah to tell her that he got carried away because of a national match going on. She called Max to make him recall about the dinner and smiled looking at the crowd when on the other hand he apologized on the repeat. “I swear I am leaving, Sarah. I am coming to you and your sweet dessert…” “Max, are you for real? It’s going to rain. You gotta be here…you got half an hour that’s it.” Only twenty minutes later Jones' brother came and seemed delighted finding he reached before Max could. Sarah had already served them beers and would only smile brighter when someone would praise how lucky Max got to have a wife like Sarah. “I think we should get the lights out. I am sure he is close.” Jones said before switching off the lights while the little electric lamps were still on. Sarah wonders how Max will react finding her in her new set of lingerie tonight. All of them heard the fast footsteps outside. It was already pouring so they knew it was Max hurrying to get to the door. Sarah walked to the door and the moment knob was turned without any knock she jumped on the love of her life. “Happy Birthday,” Her arms were tightened around the neck of the man and she was quick to trail her mouth over his cheeks to whisper. “I love you,” only to blink when she noticed a very faint subtle on the cheeks, and the hands that were holding onto her to keep her from falling. She got her hands down slowly only to widen her eyes when the lights came. She was looking into those same green eyes that had haunted her for years. Her mouth slowly started falling as she seemed too shocked to move. “Sarah,” She heard Max’s voice and got her hands off of Adam in a blink before she tried to look past Adam’s shoulder who refuse to move. “Mr. Cross?" Max questioned when he didn't move. “Adam you are in the way…” Sarah said but Adam could see how her eyes got teary. Sarah seemed to be fuming with anger. Adam moved a little only for Max to shout. “You didn’t! You…” Max shouted taking notice of all the arrangements and his friends. In excitement, Max got his all weight on Sarah making her take a few steps back while her eyes remained plastered to the man standing at her door. "Oh my god," Max gasped and in a blink, Sarah got her cheeks in Max's hands as he kissed her deeply. Sarah smiled when Max pulled away and kept her eyes on Max. "I love you," Max whispered but then looked at his back as if he was reminded of something.  "I am so sorry, Mr Cross. I didn't know they were planning this...why don't you use the phone? Or..." Max looked at Sarah before looking at Adam again. "You can stay...my wife makes the best pasta, I swear..." Sarah looked at Max and gulped when she saw Adam. "Honey...he is the CEO of the firm I am working for. I mean...my company is one of the subsidiaries of Cross Inc too..." A smirk appeared at the corner of Adam's mouth when her husband mentioned working for him and Sarah bit her lip. But when she remained static Max whispered lowly. "Sarah...are you fine?"  "Hello,..." Sarah's voice came clipped. She could feel her whole skin burning on coals and gulping visibly managed. "...we have a lot of food. And, it will be a pleasure to host you at my husband's birthday party." Sarah tried to shake her head a little to gesture to Adam not to accept the invitation but Adam only got one more foot in their home before he said, "I would love to stay here a little," I hope you liked the chapter...love you all. And, Happy New Year my lovelies... F.a.c.e.b.o.o.k page: Ashleh Queen I.n.s.t.a.g.r.a.m: theashlehqueen T.w.i.t.t.e.r: AshlehQ
