Arrow Creation

「You have one friend invite from Ginji777. Would you like to accept? 」

As soon as Ryu entered the game, he got the notification. He accepted the friend request and check out Ginji’s character.

「3. Ginji777 Level 85 Paladin – Online 」

He clicked on Ginji’s name and make a call. As soon as the call connected, there is a screen showing Ginji’s face.

“What the hell man? I thought you would be at a higher level due to how you used to brag to me before I played the game but you’re just level 85. Not to mention your class is a paladin, not an archer.”

“Well, I tried to use a ranged weapon before but as you know my accuracy can’t keep up with my amazing techniques so I choose melee combatant instead. Anyway, where are you?”

“I’m at Veloz. Will you come over here?”

“Teleporting to Veloz is quite expensive. Besides, what am I going to do if I come there? We can’t party up and this game doesn’t allow power leveling bus.”

“Man, you can just send me some gold to buy equipment and make me overpowered for low-level monster.”

“Bro I already tell you that 1 gold is equal to 100$. Even though we’re bestfriends I am not gay okay. I’ll just send you some leftover items from my inventory.”

“Thanks, man, I know you’re the best. Anyway, what’s up with this game. The cost of an arrow is so expensive. If 1 gold means 100$, 1 silver means 10$ so the cost of one arrow is 1¢. Surely you know about this right? You want me to become an archer so I can suffer every time I am restocking my arrow.”

“N-no way man. I totally only goad you to choose an archer because if you don’t it would be a waste of your talent. Ah, speaking of an arrow, there is a skill called  《Arrow Creation》  . It will save you some money. I didn’t know the exact detail of the quest but it said you can get it from an NPC in Veloz named Tony. You can try your luck.”

“Thanks, it will save me some money on arrows if it is true. Alright, I’m going to find Tony. I’ll do my best to catch up so we can play together.”

“Okay man, see ya.”

「Ginji777 sent you 3 silver. Ginji777 sent you a gift box. You can receive the items at the post office. 」

“I guess I should check out the post office first while asking where I can find Tony.”

Ryu then asked any person that he met about the post office and Tony. The post office can be easily found since it wasn’t far from the square. He checked with the officer and immediately gained access to his gift.

「You have received 3 silver. You have received composite bow x 1. You have received basic necklace x 1. You have received basic red potion x 30. 」

The silver can be used to buy things he needs. The composite bow is better than his current training bow and gives a boost to attack. The necklace added 3 points to vitality and strength. The red potion can be used to replenish health and will come in handy.

If Ryu could learn the skill to make an arrow, it would make it easier for him to hunt in the long run so the skill is essential. He has money but he thinks that it was not worth it to convert real-life money for in-game currency just to buy arrow. So, it is better to find Tony and learn the skill.

After asking around in town, he found out that Tony lives on the outskirts. After getting the general direction, he heads out to see him. Tony’s house is a small hut, there is a drying rack full of beast skin and meat being roasted on a bonfire. A burly figure can be seen rotating the meat so it can be concluded that he is the owner of the place.

“Good day sir, sorry to intrude. Are you the hunter Tony?”

“Yeah, what do you need?”

“I heard about your skill so I am here to learn arrow creation from you.”

“Oh, it’s been a long time since anyone come to learn how to make an arrow from me. Are you in a rush? If not, you can sit down and enjoy the meat first. I am quite confident that the taste won’t lose to a professional chef.”

“I would be glad to.”

A free meal to replenish his satiety is always welcomed. It can also increase his relationship with Tony. While eating, they are chatting about some things related to hunting and Ryu gained some new insight on how to hunt more efficiently. At first, it seemed to be just a tale of Tony’s hunting experience but somehow it has information about how to hunt some monster.

The meat is finally gone and now the talk is heading towards the skill acquisition.

“So, why do you want to learn arrow creation from me?”

“To be honest, buying an arrow every time I am going to hunt is not cost-effective. That’s when I heard that I can actually make my own arrow. So, here I am.” Ryu a bit embarrassed with his answer but it is better for him to tell the truth to Tony.

“Alright then, first you have to show me how good you are with the bow.”

“Sure.”

“Please hit that tree over there using these arrows. You have 10 tries.”

The arrows that Tony gives Ryu is not your regular arrow. There is no arrowhead in front and no fletching at the end. It was basically a thin wooden tube. Ryu didn’t expect this but he soon adjusted his mind and took a shooting pose.

“That’s quite a nice stance. Stable and firm. Let’s see if you really have some skill or not.”

*swish*

Ryu’s attack is launched and it has a nice trajectory, however, before it was going to hit the tree it suddenly skewed to the right and miss.

“Darnit! I was so close. The next one definitely going to hit.”

Once more Ryu loaded his bow and release the arrow but it wasn’t even anywhere near the tree. His aim is good but somehow it always misses the target. Even after all 10 arrows are gone, he still hasn’t able to hit the target.

“Now, try using this one.”

Ryu received the next set of arrows from Tony. This time, the arrows have arrowhead but they are varying in form.

“Alright.”

Ryu repeated his shooting. The arrow definitely flies better than the first set of the arrow but still, Ryu couldn’t seem to hit the target. He knew that there is something wrong with these arrows and definitely not his aim that’s missed.

“Now, try with these arrows.”

The last set of arrows that he received definitely looked like there’s nothing wrong but once again when it was going to hit the target, it slanted to another direction. Looking at the flight of the arrow, Ryu noticed the fletching of the arrows are uneven and seemed to be moving around because of the wind.

“So, what do you think about the arrow?”

“The first one, the arrow is incomplete. The second one is the same. The third one is complete but the fletching seemed to be a problem.”

In Ryu’s whole archery life, he never really put importance on the arrow. The arrow for the competition is projected one while the one he used at home is prepared by his father. He knows that something is wrong but couldn’t tell where it is.

“Alright, I’ll tell you then. The first arrow is made of the body only. Aside from wood, you can make it from any kind of material but you need to make sure that their shape is a perfect tube. Not only that their shape has to be perfect, you also need to make sure that their weight is even. Some of the arrows you used earlier is hollow which makes their weight uneven and will affect your accuracy.”

“I see. I just thought that their weight is different but didn’t really understand the concept behind it.”

“The second arrow teaches you about the arrowhead. You could make all kinds of arrowheads, either it is a sharp one or round like a ball. However, you should make sure that your arrowhead is able to guide the arrow to the target perfectly. You can do this by making sure it is symmetrical and sharp to pierce through the wind or round and even to decrease the wind resistance. The sharp end will increase its penetrating power while round ones with greater weight will increase impact damage.”

All the arrows that Ryu used in real life always have a pointy end. Hearing the explanation gives him a new understanding that there are several purposes for the arrowhead.

 “The last is the fletching. It can be made from the plant’s fiber or animal’s feather. The purpose is to stabilize the arrow to fly in its trajectory. There are three common types of fletching. The straight type which create the fastest arrow and won’t give a spin to the arrow but easily affected by the wind so they are great for short shots. Offset ones where the vanes are straight but turned from the front to the back which will give similar rotation like a g*n barrel. This type gives better stability but will cause the loss of arrow speed. Lastly, a helical type that gives maximum stability and highest accuracy at a longer distance to the arrow spin but it causes the greater loss of arrow speed in turn for all of its advantage. You can also experiment with the length and height but that is for a later date.”

Hearing all of the explanation, Ryu seemed to be a little dizzy but he knows that this information is useful.

“Now, as you want to learn how to make an arrow, you will need to learn how to make the 3 parts which make an arrow. The body, arrowhead, and the fletching.”

「You have received Arrow Creation skill quest from Tony. Do you accept? 」

“OK. What do I have to do now?”

“Since this is your first time, we will do it the easy way. You just have to gather some lumber for the materials of your arrow’s body. The arrowhead will be made from sharp stone and the fletch will be made from plants. You can gather them around here.”

「Arrow Creation skill quest. Collect lumber 0/10. Sharp stone 0/10. Plant fiber 0/10. 」

“There is an ax if you want to cut down a tree beside the hut. The sharp stone can be gathered near the river and the plant fiber can be found hanging down from the trees. I’ll be waiting here for you to collect them all.”

“Yes, I’ll be back in a jiffy.”
