3 After a few hours, we were on the move again. I’d slept a little resting on Gunnr in his wolf form. Even now I dozed, my arm wound around Erik’s neck. The wind on my face told me how fast the Berserker was traveling. At dawn, we crested a bare hill and there was nothing but forest and fields for miles and miles. The sun climbed in the sky and still Erik carried me as if I weighed nothing. Every so often, the great eagle flew over us and the black wolf slipped out of the underbrush. We came to a great river and Erik followed it until it broke into two smaller tributaries. He waded into one, lifting me high so my cloak would not touch the water. “The water hides our trail,” he said once he’d crossed to the other side and resumed an easy run.
