Before.
Monday’s suck.
I bit back a sigh, looking down at the cup of coffee in my hand. It was a bit cold this morning and I was so thankful Lavender made me grab my coat before leaving the house. It was just eight thirty and I wanted to go back home and crawl into bed.
I was used to waking up later in the day. I had been job hunting for so long, barely getting by with the little they paid me at that mini mart where I worked. This was my first actual job in months and I was partially terrified, partially excited.
I was dressed smartly in a white shirt tucked into black pants, vans on my feet and the long coat hanging off my body, my hair was fluffed and falling past my brows.
I looked up at the big, tall building in front of me. WilCA Corp. I was to work as a temporary assistant to the William Carson himself. I had spent last night googling, trying to find more information about my boss so I don’t do something wrong and get fired on the first day. All I saw was him having dinner with different men and woman, leaving clubs with different men and women, stories about his wealth, his company breaking records but nothing about the man personally.
I mentally shook myself. I couldn’t just keep standing and staring up at the building, the security men were already giving me looks. I pulled out the id card that had been sent over and finally walked into the building.
I downed my entire cup of coffee as I waited for the elevator with a couple of other people. I tossed the empty cup into the bin before stepping into the elevator. I had done an online orientation since I was meant to resume promptly and an on-site one would done by someone from the welcome committee.
Of course a successful company like this had a welcome committee.
I took the elevator up to the twelfth floor which was a private floor for the CEO, William Carson and his personal assistant. An entire floor.
When I finally got to the top floor, I finally got out. My jaw promptly hitting the floor. There were different pictures of William Carson on the wall, magazine covers, company headlines. Marble ground, a large desk with a computer and huge chair that looked so comfortable. Everything was separated by huge glass windows. Beside the desk was a door with the words CEO on it and a meeting room on the other side.
I walked around, taking in the place. There was also an ensuite bathroom, the small kitchen and the meeting room. I didn’t go into the CEO’s office though. Knowing my luck I’d just walk in and he would already be there and seated.
I was walking out of the meeting room, my phone in my hands, fingers mving swiftly across the screen as I tried to text Lavender. I was so preoccupied by that, that I didn’t notice someone else was here besides me and bumped right into them.
I went still, my eyes growing wide. I looked down and held back a whimper when I see expensive shoes. God please don’t let it be my new boss. God please don’t let it be William Carson. Oh god, oh god.
“Well, are you just going to keep your head on my chest?” A deep voice asked and I gulped, timidly moving backwards. I refuse to look up at him, I keep my gaze on the ground.
“Sorry, sir.”
“You are the new employee. You’re new and you came in twenty minutes late.”
His words promptly made me look up. What the f**k was he talking about. The welcome message and information packet, told me to come in by eight and here I am. If anyone came late, it was this rude b…
It was this rude man.
“Look!” I snapped, finally looking up at him. I almost bit my tongue when I finally saw him. He looked even better in real life, than he did in pictures. Dark hair styled off his face, form fitting all black suit and gold watch, stubble on his cheek and dark eyes looking right at me.
This man was gorgeous.
Yeah. It was definitely William.
He should be thankful I wasn’t holding a cup of coffee or something that could have spilled onto him.
“Look!” I repeated and I don’t even get a reaction, no raised brow, nothing. “I was told by HR to come in at eight and I did. I stood outside for a good few seconds so I could walk in right on time. So you can’t just tell me something different.” I said and this time I got the tiniest of head tilts.
“My assistants are to come in thirty minutes before the assigned time.” William said and I stared at him. What the f**k is he talking about? He can’t ju-
Shit. He could. He owned the company and judging by the way he was staring at me in a droll manner, I was seconds away from losing my job.
“I didn’t know that. I’m so sorry, Mr. Carson.” I said, trying to sound as sincere as I could.
William doesn’t say a word. He stared me for a couple seconds before walking away. I hurried after him, staying a few paces behind.
“Do you know what exactly it is you’re going to be doing here?” William asked.
“Yes, Mr. Carson.”
“I don’t condone mistakes, newbie.”
“My name is Dev, sir.”
William stops and turned to stare at me. I fought the urge to look down and just kept staring at him instead.
“Did I ask you that?”
“No, Mr. Carson.” I replied.
“Send over the Rodriguez file in five minutes and bring over a cup of coffee.” was all William said before turning back to his door, he pushed it open and walked into the office. I hadn’t even noticed I had been holding my breath until the door closed and I let out a huge gasp, breathing out.
I hurried over to my desk, falling into the seat and promptly placing my head on the table.
Oh, this was going to be hard.
