“Today is going to be the day!” I muttered to myself as I walked towards the kitchen. I was already dressed up, all I needed to do was grab my to-go coffee and I’d be out.
“Talking to yourself is a sign of madness.”
The voice startled me so much it felt like my heart had actually burst out of my chest and was now on the ground. I turned around and found Lavender leaning against the wall, yawning into her hands.
“What the f**k? Did you just get home?” I asked and she shakes her head.
“I got home by two and you were already out like a light. I just couldn’t sleep and have been catching up on my series.” She said. “I made your coffee for you.”
She gestured towards the small kitchen counter and there it was. My grey cup. Instead of going for the cup, I reached for my friend and pulled her down the short hallway to her room.
“I told you to play some music when you can’t sleep. Watching tv doesn’t help.” I said as I pushed her into the room. Once I stepped into the room, I sighed. There were clothes everywhere and is that an empty carton of pizza. Christ.
I laid her down on her bed, tossing some of the clothes to the ground. Lavender got onto the bed and under her duvet smiling at me.
“I think I’m gonna quit that job.” She said.
“If you don’t like it then you should.”
The only reason she had picked that job was because we needed to pay bills and working at a convenience store like I did, didn’t bring in much money and we wouldn’t have been able to pay rent. But right now, I was making enough to take care of both of us.
Lavender closed her eyes and let out a soft sigh, her dark hair spilling around her pillow. I shut the door to her room gently on my way out, grabbed my mug and ran quickly to the bus stop.
I was five minutes late.
Five minutes late and William was already waiting for me. His arms were crossed and there was a frown on his face. He was clad in an all black form fitting suit with black shirt buttoned up, except the top three.
“I know I’m late I’m sorry. My roommate looked like a z-“
“I really don’t give a rat’s ass about your excuse. You’re being paid to show up on time and work!”
Geez, I wondered what crawled up his ass and died. I held down my anger, I was only trying to explain but since he’s got cotton balls in his ears and doesn’t care, I’ll keep my apology and explanation to myself.
“Okay.” I said and at this William fully turns towards me.
“That is all you have to say?”
“Yeah.” I said, walking around him. I placed my cup on the table and my satchel by the side of seat. William was still staring at where I was previously standing.
I honestly don’t know what he wanted from me. He keeps standing there for one, two, three more seconds and then he walked away. Heading right for his office and shutting the door.
I shake my head at him and fell into my seat. For such an handsome man, his temper was aggravating.
From then on till eleven thirty, William was in one meeting after the other and since I was his personal assistant I had to be there, taking notes of everything that was happening. It turned out I wasn’t the only one William was hard on but I guess that’s how he was able to build his company and get it to where it was today. He allowed no room for slackers and really hated when things didn’t go to plan or were less than his expectations, like the flyers that the marketing teams had come up with to attract a younger crowd.
WilCa was a multimillion dollar hotel company. I have seen their hotels in papers and glossy magazines, even the small scales ones they had in this state looked classy and designed beautifully, interior too and the price range was alright and affordable for the people around. It’s like he had taken that into consideration, the working range and income of the particular state or city.
He might be a temperamental pain in my ass but as I watched him, flipping through documents and talking more and more with the accounting team, William was also smart.
It made me want to learn more about him.
Bu twelve I was already thinking about lunch, while he was concluding the meeting, I pulled up my just eat app and placed two orders for spaghetti carbonara and some soda from a nearby restaurant.
“So what are your plans for lunch?” I asked William as we walked out of the meeting room. We had actually used the room on the accounting floor rather than the big one beside William’s office.
We got into the elevator together and be still doesn’t say a thing. I’ve been here for days and days and I don’t think I’ve ever seen him go out to lunch. So yeah, I was going to bring lunch to him.
William doesn’t say a think to me, he just walked into his office and shut the door. Thankfully I didn’t have to wait long for the food to arrive. I paid promptly and carried the bags of food into William’s office, not even bothering to knock.
Once I walked in I found William typing away at his phone.
“Weren’t you ever taught to knock before entering a room?” William asked.
“Weren’t you thought to be nice to people?” I spat back. I walked up to his desk and placed the carton of food on the table as well as the cutlery.
“What is this?”
“Lunch.” I replied. I sat on the chair opposite him and took out my own food carton too.
“What are you doing? Did I say you could eat here?”
“No.” I said with a shrug and opened my box of food. Steam flowed out and suddenly the air in this office smelled better than ever. Oh my god, the food smelt divine.
“Get out.”
“Eat your food.”
“Dev.”
“Mr. Carson.” I said, giving him a big smile. I don’t pay him any more attention and focused on my food. Sure enough, a couple minutes later, William picked up his fork and took a big bite of his food.
I win.
