Chapter 15 - Lucy's Story

1158 Words
Even though he was denied, Andrew remained unaffected. “You see, Miss Baker personally sent me back to see Miss Yates because of the progress I made with her. I managed to get her to say a single word, and now Miss Baker wants to see if I can get her to say more.”   The nurse looked shocked for a moment. “That's amazing,” she said honestly.   “And also, Dr. Turner said that I could speak with her. You can check with him,” Andrew added.    “Alright. But only for a little bit,” the nurse conceded. She then took a key out of her pocket and unlocked the door for him.   When Andrew walked in, Lucy still sat facing the window just like she did when he met her for the first time. But his thoughts about her had changed. He could feel that Lucy yearned for life outside, but that world was too dangerous for her.    Lucy heard the door open, but she didn't move.    "Lucy, it's me,” Andrew announced softly. He saw Lucy's shoulders tremble slightly before she slowly turned her head, her beautiful eyes full of mixed feelings.   “You're here,” Lucy said hoarsely. When she remembered how she had boldly hugged Andrew not too long ago, she blushed.    “Are you cold?” Andrew asked as he reached to close her window. “You look a bit feverish.”   “No!” she suddenly shrieked. “Don't!”   He froze with his hand in the air, startled by her reaction. Andrew turned to look at her in confusion, not understanding what was going on.   Lucy knew she needed to explain. "Don't close the window... Only when it's open... can I feel the outside world and know that I am a normal person,” she whispered.   It was heartbreaking that Lucy had to open the window to feel the outside world. What a cruel punishment it was for such a young girl, and her words saddened Andrew. He believed she would not choose to stay in this hospital if there was another way to keep her safe.   Andrew stepped away from the window and knelt before her. “Can you tell me your story?” he asked gently.   Suddenly, Andrew got a notification from the system.    You have a new mission: Learn about Lucy's story. You will be rewarded with a box of toffee once you complete the task.   Are you kidding me? Andrew thought. It seemed to him that the rewards given by the system were getting more absurd. But according to his previous experiences, every task reward was useful. He knew that he would need the box of toffee in the future.   Lucy didn't know what Andrew was thinking about. She just believed that Andrew was a trustworthy person who didn't abandon her in the face of her attacker. She felt remorse about how she suspected he was the hitman sent to kill her, especially after everything he had done for her.   Since the killer had seen Andrew's appearance, Lucy knew that he would never let Andrew go. Therefore, she looked both guilty and grateful when she faced him. "Once upon a time, there was a little girl..." she began.   As soon as Lucy spoke, Andrew knew that she was telling him her story, so he hurriedly sat down and listened carefully for fear of missing any detail.   "She had a mother who loved her and a father who was busy with work. Although the little girl's father was very busy, he brought the little girl her favorite candies every time he returned home. This was the happiest moment for the little girl every day.    “But with the success of her father's career, he seldom returned home, and her mother rarely smiled because of it. The little girl heard her parents fighting many times when she woke up in the middle of the night. When this happened, the little girl would throw the covers over her head and eat some of the candies in secret, as if she could feel the warmth they once gave her. However, over time the candies tasted less sweet.   "The girl seldom returned home after she went to college because she really hated the atmosphere in her home and wanted to avoid it. However, after being away from home for a few months, she suddenly received a call from her family's housekeeper. The housekeeper told her that the girl's mother was ill and was now in a coma.   'The girl panicked and rushed home, but... she didn't make it in time to say goodbye to her mother. That day, she cried all night at her mother's bedside, but her father never showed up.    "One month after that girl's mother passed away, her father suddenly returned with a woman in her thirties and a teenage girl. The teenager was very young, but she looked exactly like the college girl's dad. The college girl finally understood that the woman was her father's mistress, and the teenage girl was her father's illegitimate daughter.   "The college girl's father asked her to call his mistress 'Mom' and told her the teenage girl was her younger sister. She broke down at that time and asked her father if his new family was the reason he drove her mother to death. That day... was the first time she had been slapped by her father, and she ran away crying.   "She sat in the park and cried all night. Finally, she was found by someone sent by her father. But from that day on, the girl never said a word to anyone. She was living like a puppet every day, doing nothing but eating and sleeping.    After getting along with her father for a while, she gradually learned about her parents. It was really an old-fashioned story without much drama. In the past, her mother and father were very affectionate. Her father was very capable and started a company on his own, but her mother gave up her career for the family's sake.    “Many years later, her father's company grew. He started an affair with his very attractive secretary, and the woman got pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl.    "The college girl's mother was furious and started to quarrel with her dad. She thought about divorce but didn't want to ruin her daughter's life. However, her daughter refused to come home for a long time, and she consequently fell into a deep depression. She then got sick and passed away.   “A few years later, the college girl's father suddenly became seriously ill. The doctor said it was late-stage terminal cancer. She felt sad, but she also thought that it was her father's retribution because it turned out that he had more than one mistress. However, in addition to the retribution against her father, she found out that someone was trying to kill her...”
