THE WAITING GAME

“IS Braille busy?” Carl shook his head in response to David’s question. The reliable secretary raised his head from the monitor atop his table. “But she’s not in a good mood either.” A frown marred his face. He asked again. “Why? We got the deal from Blue Moon pack.” “I don’t know. She has been grumpy the past 3 days.” Carl followed it with a shrug. “Really?” The male secretary nodded. He motioned at him that he will enter the private office of their female boss. David knocked twice before he went inside. He found his sister sitting in her chair. She was busy looking down at the document on top of the table. She was glaring at the open folder. The secretary was right. Looking at the face of the woman, it was apparent that she was cranky. It was quite unusual to see his sister in this mood. Braille was the kind of person who does not let her personal emotion affects her work or any situation. A very admirable mindset that made her the best in her position not just as boss of the company but also as a leader of the pack. “What crawl up your a*s, alpha?” Braille looked up. The scowl on her face deepened when he saw her brother. His grinning made her more irritable. “I’m not in the mood, David. What do you want?” The alpha countered after closing the folder she was reading. On the other hand, David placed another folder on the table. “This is the contract for the Blue Moon pack. I need your signature.” She opened the folder. After scanning the papers, she put her signature. She returned the document to him. “Anything else?” “Just to remind you this Saturday. It’s your nephew’s birthday.” Braille nodded. “He told me to remind you of his gift.” She scratched her temple when she remembered that she has not bought the gift yet. Her mind was on another matter for the past few days. “What did he ask this time?” “Your little boy asked me for a remote-controlled helicopter.” “Damn.” David uttered. “My son definitely knows what he wants.” “Indeed.” “Just to remind you also, my son is just five. Please don’t spoil him so much.” She answered him with a shrug. David stood up when the alpha did not say another word. He exited the door after he waved his hand goodbye. On the other hand, Braille was left alone in the office. She took a deep sigh. She glanced at her watch after a while. It was already four in the afternoon. “Do I have an appointment later today?” She mind linked Carl. That was the second benefit of being a werewolf. When a werewolf is a part of a pack, everyone can mind link anyone as long as he or she is of the same pack. “You’re free, alpha.” “Thank you.” She picked up the things that she needed before standing on her feet. Carl was busy at his table when she saw him on her way out of her private office. “Call me when it’s urgent.” Before the secretary could reply, the intercom buzz. He pressed a button on the desk phone. “Good afternoon, Mr. Davis. A Natasha Russo is looking for Miss Wilson.” The voice of the receptionist on the ground floor bounce from the machine. Carl turned to her. Her heart beats faster when she heard the name of the person looking at her. She knew that her secretary can hear the wild thumping of her heart at their distance. “Tell her to send Natasha to my office.” She mind linked Carl before going back to the office. She heard him relaying the message to the receptionist. She straightened her clothes before sitting on the chair behind the desk. Her eyes were gawking at the doors waiting for her guest. She drummed her fingers in the arm of the swivel chair. It helps with the restlessness she felt inside. She blinked when she heard a warning knock. Carl opened the door after a few seconds. “Miss Wilson, Natasha Russo is here.” She nodded. A while later, a petite woman entered the office. The woman is wearing a floral sundress. A cardigan was on her arm. A paper bag of a known brand was in her other hand. Her natural, brown curls were down. “Hi, I’m Natasha Russo.” The petite woman smiled at her. She remained staring at her beautiful face bared of make-up except for the light shade of pink smeared on her thin lips.  “Hello.” “I was the one who bump into you and ruined your shirt. It happened a few days ago in front of a bakeshop.” “Oh, yeah.” She answered as if she is trying to remember. If this woman only knows the truth. Braille still remembered by heart the color of the shirt she wore that day. She can still recall how the wind swayed her hair that night. “I’m sorry it took me more than a week before I see you.” More like two weeks, Braille thought. “I didn’t notice.” She replied instead. “Here, I hope it fits.” Natasha hand over the paper bag. “Thank you.” She reached for the bag and placed it atop the table. “I should go.” The petite woman turned to the door. “Are you free today?” She asked before her nerves eat her alive. She almost wanted to leap from her chair to pull her back up the moment Natasha moved her shoulders towards the door. “W-what?” A surprise was written on the petite woman’s face. Natasha stared at her with a question in her eyes. “I mean, do you have somewhere to go? I might need your help.” She answered. Her hand was gripping the armchair as she waits for Natasha’s response. The girl frowned. “What kind of help?” The alpha stood up, relieved. She sent the human a wide smile. “I need your opinion about something. You see, my nephew’s birthday is coming and I sort of forgot that I need to buy him a gift.” “Oh?” Her pink lips pout a little. Natasha looked up as she stood beside her. Braille’s smile widened. With this proximity, she found out that she was a foot taller than her. “You’re small.” She commented on their difference. The woman’s brow shot up. “Do we have a problem?” She shook her head. “I like the difference. It just fits mine.” She grinned at her. “Let’s go.” Braille put her hand at the small of her back before guiding her to the door. I miss this, she thought as she took a deep breath. Carl stood up when he saw them. Disbelief was visible on his face. She nods at him. The smile was still painted on her lips. “Call me when needed.” “Yes, Miss Wilson.” He responded. He bowed his head slightly when she passed by him. “Are you Chinese?” Natasha asked as they walked towards the elevator. “No.” She heard the low chuckle of her secretary before they went inside the metal enclosure. “You got yourself an observant girl, Alpha.” Her secretary mind-linked her. “Indeed. You just meet your Luna, Carl.” “R-really? Congratulations, Alpha Braille! There is no better news than this.” Braille grinned. He was not the only one who was ecstatic at this news. It has been eight years since the moon goddess claimed back the mate destined for her. It rarely happened a werewolf was given a second chance mate. The goddess must have seen her struggles and the good things she can do and will do for the pack that she bestowed her a second chance at love. Though there was a little complication since her second mate was human and claimed to be straight. It only means only thing; she needs to work harder to claim her trust. She can do that. She told herself with renewed resolve. “Good luck with the date, Alpha. I’m really happy for you. Consider the rest of the day free.” “Thank you.” The car is already waiting out front. Damian nodded at her. She opened the passenger seat for Natasha before she went to the driver’s side. She thanked Damian before she went inside. “I’m happy for you, Alpha.” “Thank you.” She answered her driver-bodyguard before closing the mind link. Carl was not able to contain himself that she quickly told Damian. “You’re not Korean, right?” She chuckled when Natasha said that as they travel towards the nearest mall. The girl was indeed observant. “And you’re Italian.” “Yes, but I grew up here in the States.” The journey lasted for fifteen minutes. Though they were not talking, there was no tension in the air. The taller woman might be a little nervous but Braille tried not to show the human girl that her mere presence can make her feel giddy. “You already have a thing in mind?” Natasha asked as they walked inside the mall. “You. I mean, yes.” She bit her inner cheek for the slip. They went to the gadget store after she parked the park in the basement of the popular mall. An employee immediately assisted them when she told him of what she needs. “Your nephew is very lucky to have you.” “Thank you.” “How old is he?” “Five.” “Wow! Spoiled boy.” “Yeah, I’ve been told.” She paid for the toy and they went out of the store after. And since Braille wanted to prolong the day, she asked Natasha for a cup of coffee that the petite girl agreed to.
