Questionable Love Affair

Chapter 1: Divorce
***
I was born into a family of gangsters… And ever since my brother died it was my duty to take over the operations, so I did as any good daughter would and followed the rules. I did what I needed to get ahead in life and I thrived, that was until I met him…
“Was it another big job?” My lover Mark, who’s slighter younger than me, a handsome guy in his early twenties, asked me in a sort of mellow sounding voice.
“Nothing outside the usual.” I replied without thinking much of it.
“Hey, you don’t seem to be feeling too good lately, did something happen on your last job?” Mark asked me while wrapping his arms around my shoulders, I glanced at him and rested my head on his.
“It’s just… On the last job the guy told me I will pay for my sins.” I opened up to Mark, he was my lover and always comforted me when I needed it the most. He was the observant type that paid attention to me.
“Hm? That’s ridiculous, if that was the case then all the bad people in this world would have died already.” Mark said in a sort of chattery laughter that made me feel more at ease.
“I thought the same thing, but somehow his words stuck with me.” I continued, it wasn’t just what he said… that same day his son died and the eyes that glared at me with those words that followed made me question if I was doing the right thing.
But I decided not to share that with Mark, after all he wasn’t a part of this world like I was, I didn’t want to drag him into it unnecessarily.
“Is that the money from today? Do you want me to send it to your accounts?” Mark asked me, I usually gave this task to my accountant but he quit last week so Mark’s been helping me out nowadays.
“Yes, thank you.” I said while finally standing up, I brushed my hair out and tied it in a ponytail. I hated having long hair, but as a woman in the organization, it was beneficial. If I were to cut it short it would be as if I was telling the world outside that I was a gang member, and that would be no good since the company we have as a front is a legitimate business.
I have to keep up appearances…
“You know, there was someone that came over today looking for you, but I rushed him off, he looked disheveled probably someone that owes you money.” Mark explained, when listening to him I paused for a moment.
“Why would someone like that come here?” I asked.
“Hm? I don’t know.” He replied and it made me a bit suspicious, so I headed to the camera room to check who came over today. To my surprise it was my own father.
“You didn’t recognize him?” I asked while glancing across the room to Mark who was busy making dinner.
“No? He didn’t look like anyone you know.” Mark replied, he’s seen my father only once before I took over his position but my dad hasn’t been the same since.
Drug use… I don’t know if he did it voluntarily or if he was forced into it but either way my father was completely unreliable… So my older brother had to take over the organization instead but then he died in a fight. Now it’s just me…
“Was he someone important? I’m sorry if I made a mistake…” Suddenly Mark began apologizing, he was always the type to worry about such things. And even if I was angry at him I wouldn’t stay angry for long since he always showed me such a cute expression that made me unable to resist him.
“No, nobody important.” I replied while heading to the shower. After I washed off I noticed I had some blood on me. That same day I shot a man, it had become daily routine for me so I didn’t pay it any mind. But it also made me wonder when I became so disentesized to everything in the world.
I looked at myself in the mirror, and I couldn’t remember the last time I smiled… I’m only 26 but I look like I have a constant cold expression on my face. Maybe because I never really got to have friends and do normal things like others could…
But none of that mattered, I had to do my job well if I am to survive in this world…
“If tomorrow that big presentation you have?” Mark asked me while setting the table, as usual it was a simple meal he prepared with care.
“Yes, I’ll have to sit in that stiffy room with those old guys again.” I said while leaning back into my chair. It was only around Mark that I felt somewhat free, like I could relax a bit and not worry as much, even if it was for a little while.
“That sounds rough, but I’m sure you’ll do great, I believe in you!” Mark’s sweet words always made me happier than I could imagine. “Also… if it’s not too much to ask… could you… lend me some money for tomorrow?” He asked ina sort of sheepish voice.
“Sure, how much do you need?” I asked, it wasn’t out of the ordinary for him to ask me for money, we’ve been married for about a year now and he’s unemployed, but that didn’t ever matter since I make more than enough for both of us.
“I was thinking of getting us a vacation somewhere exotic, so maybe 10k will be enough for the reservations.” Mark said while smiling brightly at me. Oh, so I loved that smile of his.
“Sure, I’ll deposit them to your account now.” I didn’t hesitate to give him money any time he asked for it. Because we were together, because he’s the one person I trusted, money meant nothing to me either way.
“Thank you, I won’t tell you where we’re going though! But you better make sure to free up at least a week of time for next month!” Mark said in an over joyous sounding voice.
“Right on our anniversary?” I asked, already having seen through him.
“Damn it… you always figure these things out…” Mark sounded a bit disappointed as he shrugged his shoulders.
“It’s fine, it doesn’t need to be anything too special.” I said after I finished my dinner. I leaned over the table and kissed him. “As long as you’re with me anywhere’s fine.” I said while smiling. Mark then pulled me in to deepen the kiss. We soon moved to the bedroom…
If Mark’s good looks were the main reason I fell in love with him, then his skills in bed were the second… He always had a way of making me feel like everything else around us disappeared and it was just the two of us alone.
“Hey, what do you think about having a kid?” Mark suddenly asked me while he was still inside me.
“I’m not that keen on the idea, I can’t take time off work either.” I said while wrapping my legs around his waist. “Is this really the time you want to ask me that?” I asked in a sort of seductive manner, though I couldn’t really tell if I came across as such.
“Haha… I just started thinking that a baby that looks just like you would be adorable…” Mark suddenly declared as he continued thrusting.
“Maybe another time…” I said while we continued.
Having kids always seemed like a no for me… since I’d be dragging another person into this lifestyle… I didn’t want to make a person come into this world and then force them to live like a criminal.
I know for a fact that no matter how much I shield the hypothetical child that we could have… that it will never be enough to fully protect them…
That’s why I am so averse to it…
And the following day I would only prove myself more right by the minute…
“Miss Luell, it’s urgent!” My assistant came rushing to me the moment I stepped into the office building.
“You know I’m going to be in a meeting in a bit, can’t it wait?” I asked her, but by the shocked look in her eyes I could tell the matter couldn’t wait any longer.
“It’s the police miss, they’ve come to speak with you!” My assistant spoke in a low voice but I could hear it in her trembling demeanor that she was on edge.
“Fine, I’ll speak to them.” I spoke as calmly as I possibly could while heading up to my office. The policemen waiting for me there seemed as stoic as ever. Definitely not the type that I can bargain with.
“I hear you have questions for me.” I spoke as I entered the room and the next thing I knew I was put in hand cuffs and taken down to the police station for questioning.
“You’re Luell Lardwhile daughter of Henry Lardwhile and sole heir of WFL incorporated, correct?” The questioning continued for a while and I remained silent throughout the entire interrogation.
I had no reason to speak to them without my lawyer being present there and they also had no right to hold me there for an extended period of time… or so I thought.
“We’ve received an anonymous tip from an insider about your dealings, how you use your legal business as a front and launder money from your organization.” The police officer explained as if he was well aware of everything, but I didn’t believe it… at first…
But as the more time went on, I was kept in a cell and I realized just how deep I had been dug. Even after my lawyer came, I only heard bad news from him.
“Tell Mark to pay off my bail, I want to go home already.” I said while crossing my legs, the suffocating atmosphere in the dirty cell made me feel like pulling my hair out one strand at a time.
“Your lover... Mark, he ran away. It seemed like he was cheating on you, and also stealing company funds…” My lawyer spoke in such a meek manner I could tell he was afraid of the consequences of his words.
But I couldn’t even pay attention to him at the time, I was so shocked...
