Chapter 2: Betrayal *** “He cheated on me? And stole from me…” I mumbled under my breath in disbelief, Mark was my rock, he was the person I thought I could trust the most. He was my only source of the smallest bit of happiness I thought I was permitted in this cruel world… but even that seemed to be too much for me. “He didn’t manage to take everything but he took enough to make a dent in our books and now the law is looking at the company in a different light.” As my lawyer continued to speak I barely paid attention to his words. “The news are circulating with all kinds of speculations about your sudden arrest… and our company standing is dwindling as now…” I already understood the situation I was in… the one I was dragged into… “Was Mark the anonymous tipper that sold me off to the cops?” I asked and my lawyer didn’t seem to know how to respond besides giving me a weak nod. “I see…” Words couldn’t describe the immense hatered I felt at that moment. My emotions that ranged from sadness to disappointment to complete distain for the person I thought I loved… It wasn’t uncommon for lovers to stab you in the back in this world… in fact I would expect that same from anyone else even my own father… But I stupidly thought that Mark was different than them… I truly thought he was the one person I could trust… Just how foolish of a woman am I? I won’t ever make the same mistake again… “There is someone willing to assist you.” Those words suddenly brought me back into reality. “Who is it?” I asked curiously. In this situation I am right now I wouldn’t expect anyone to want to get their hands dirty. In fact even my own men in the organization can do little than fiddle with their thumbs while they wait. If there is such a person that can help me, they’d have to be very influential… “Samuel Cunningham… Do you know of him? He made an offer.” My lawyer explained, suddenly he seemed to have hope in his eyes. “I don’t know of him, what’s the offer?” I asked now interested I leaned forward. “He’d like to speak to you personally, I will bring him in.” As he said he stood up and spoke with the guards, it wasn’t even a minute later that a man I’d never seem before walked through that door. I stared at him intently trying to figure him out, he had sharp eyes, a good build and his face wasn’t scarred as our typical mafia members would have, his hands though looked like he’d done fieldwork before. He was an impressive sight for sure. “Luell, it’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance at last I’m Samuel…” The way he politely introduced himself and sat down with that casual air about him. I didn’t know what to make of it. “Why do you want to help me?” I asked, straight to the point, I didn’t have the leisure of time to be able to speak about this for an extended length. “Well… we have a common enemy it seems. Your partner seems to have ran away hand in hand with my own lover Jasmine.” Samuel’s cool demeanor made it incredibly difficult for me to read his expressions. I could tell he was someone that took matters like these seriously. “Oh… so he’s with another cheater… aren’t they two peas in a pot.” I said in a sort of self mocking manner. I glanced at him. “Why are you willing to help me?” I repeated my question. “What do you want?” I asked more specifically, letting him know I wasn’t someone he can trick as easily into playing into his game. “I want revenge on both of them… And you’re the one that knows him best, right? You can surely figure out where he traveled with Jasmine to. I just ask that you let me deal with both of them after we find them.” Samuel spoke with such certainty as if he was already convinced I would help him. “And if I refuse?” I asked while staring blankly at him. Both of us had the same cold expression on our faces, as if we had gone through the same struggles in life. “Then you can rot here in prison as much as you’d like.” Samuel said in a low whisper as he leaned over the table and continued. “Whether you like it or not I’m the only person you can rely on right now… and I’m extending a helping hand to you, so accept it or do as you wish and I will leave.” This bastard… he knew from the moment he walked in here that I wouldn’t refuse. He’s right, I don’t have a choice, each moment spent here away from the organization is another moment they can be attacked and taken over… All of my hard work throughout the last five years would have been to complete waste… “Also I have one more condition.” Samuel suddenly interrupted. “I’d like you to pretend to be my lover for the duration of our joint revenge.” He said as he sat back down into his chair. “Sorry, but being your personal f**k toy was never my intention. I won’t sell my body to you or anyone.” I declared without hesitation. “Don’t worry about that.” Samuel shrugged in a sort of defeated manner as he pointed downwards to his crotch. “I can’t get it up, so it’s not like I’m trying to sleep with you.” He said while holding back a chuckle. I tilted my head to the side, of course there was no way for me to confirm whether he’s telling the truth or not. “Then why do you want me to be your fake lover?” I questioned. “You’re the head of Black Rose, and I’m the head of Snake Threat. That much should explain it to you.” Samuel spoke leisurely in front of the police, I felt like my anger was going to boil over. “You-” Before I could react he signaled to me to remain quiet as he continued. “Don’t worry, I’ve already paid off the police, none of this is getting out of this room.” Samuel reassured me. “So you’re willing to join forced with your rival organization just to spite your ex?” I questioned while observing him and he gave me a simple nod in response before asking me once more. “Your decision?” Of course I agreed… I wasn’t stupid enough to pass on such an offer. After I was released from prison, it had already been a week since I was taken in, of course everyone had questions for me and I wasn’t too inclined to answer any of them. “No interviews, my wife hates being in the spotlight you see.” Samuel not only protected me from the gazes of the hundreds of cameras and the shouting of the many onlookers but he made sure I stepped into the car safely while guarding me with his body. “Wife?” I asked him just to humor him. “I don’t see a ring on my finger?” I said while tilting my head to the side looking disappointed. “Should we buy you one right now?” Samuel asked, I assumed he was just as unserious about the proposition as I was. “Sure.” I agreed. And next thing I knew we went to a well established jeweler store to buy a matching set of rings for us. “Is it really necessary to go so far with this?” I asked him out of curiosity but I also wanted to read more into his actions which I just couldn’t predict. “I do strive to be a good lover if that’s what you’re asking.” Samuel said with a sort of casual expression on his face yet he looked away from me. “Are you compensating with money for places you lack elsewhere?” I asked while glancing down at his crotch making sure he understands the meaning behind my words. “I assure you there are more ways to have s*x than just thrusting it in like an animal.” Samuel shot me a gaze that I couldn’t tell if it was flirtatious or cocky by his attitude. But it didn’t matter, that’s what marked the beginning of our joint life together, whether it was fake or not, it seemed to be working out for both of us at the moment… And I was too preoccupied with thoughts of finding Mark and making him pay for what he did to me to care about anything else…
