Chapter 8

When we stepped into his office, I was having a hard time picking up my jaw where it dropped. The elegant and spacious office took my breath away. The whole office had an open concept, with tall glass windows overlooking the busy streets of Gold Coast. A big, dark mahogany table is at the far end center, one big bookshelf on the right, and a minibar right beside the glass window. There's an L-shaped sofa in the middle of the room and a glass center table. There's one smaller mahogany table at the left side facing the CEO's table with a computer on top. And a pregnant woman is sitting on the chair in front of it. She looked up when we entered and greeted Samuel. " Good morning, Mr. De' Luca. Your 11 am waiting for you at the conference." She informed him and gave a smile my way. " Thank you, Jenny. This is Cassandra. She will be replacing you when you retire." Was his formal reply. " Cassandra, this is my assistant, Jenny, she will guide you in everything you need to know. I will be at the conference if ever you need me. Jenny, please show her around and teach her what she needs to do." " Noted, sir. Don't you want me with you at the meeting?" Jenny asked her boss, intrigued by who Cassandra is. " No, it's okay, Jenny, I can manage. Start training Cassandra. She is starting today. The sooner she learns the rope, the sooner you can relax and be with your husband." Samuel answered. He was busy arranging whatever it is he needs to bring to his meeting. " Very well, sir. Cassandra, hi, my name is Jenny, and welcome to De' Luca Enterprise." She approached me, extending her hand. " Hi, Jenny, please call me Cassie. Pleased to meet you, and I still don't know what I'm doing here." I added in a whisper. Jenny looked at me, eyes glinting like she knows something I don't. "Stick with me, and you'll be fine. Whenever he is in a mood, stay as far away as possible. He doesn't like to be provoked or not following orders. Answer with a yes or no, and you'll be fine." She advised and patted my arm. " Then I must be the wrong person for this job. I don't follow orders most of the time, and I speak my mind if I know I'm right. He is crazy for dragging me here." I told her honestly, and she giggled. " Ahh, girls, in case you forgot, I'm still in the room, and I can hear you. Cassandra, you will learn to follow the rules now that you'll be working for me. Follow Jenny's advice, say yes or no to whatever I say. No arguments and no questions asked, are we clear on that, tesoro?" He asked me, his unwavering stare holding me in place. " I can try, but I do not promise anything," I answered him defiantly. " We'll see about that, dolcezza." He smiled wickedly, touched my cheek lightly, then went back to the elevator. " I'll see you when I'm done, girls." He said before the door to the elevator closes. His eyes never leaving me until it closed shut. " Wow, what was that? I've never seen him treat a woman like that. What have you done to him?" Jenny asked me in bewilderment. " I didn't do anything. I am quite confused myself. He came banging on my door this morning, demanding that I come with him and start working." I admitted to her. "Does he always use endearments to you guys? He's been doing that a lot. It starts to annoy me. It's not like we're a thing. He doesn't have to use those words with me." I asked Jenny because, honestly, it gets on my nerves every time he uses Italian endearments with me. It makes me miss home more, miss my parents. " Are you Italian, Cassandra? " Jenny asked me. " Huh? Oh, no, no. I've watched movies and heard those endearments many times." I answered, taken aback by her question. That was close. I need to be careful with what I am saying from now on. " Oh, okay. I thought you are Italian too because your features resemble an Italian woman. Anyway, enough with that, let's get you to the Human Resource to notify them of your arrival and your first day of work." She showed me to the elevator and punched 20. I am still in a bit of a daze here. I cannot believe I will work for The Samuel De' Luca and that I will see him every day. If I hadn't seen what I had seen that night, I would be ecstatic today and will be on cloud nine. But things after what I witnessed. I can't take it off my mind, no matter how good looking he is. He is still a murderer. If ever I find out that he knew it was me that night, I'm going to the police. I don't care who he is. He still killed someone. Right now, I'll play it cool. I don't want to end dead like that man in that alley. But I still cannot wrap my mind around how can Samuel be that kind of man? The Samuel I knew and read about is a womanizer, a business magnate, not a criminal. Who the hell is he? " Cassie, only one thing you need to remember. Be careful with who you trust and keep your distance from Samuel. You look like a nice young woman. I don't want you ending like those bimbos he's dating." Jenny told me in a serious tone. " Oh, and be careful with Olivia. She's a venomous b***h, and is always around Samuel. I guess you've read about her in the papers? The daughter of Samuel's rival in business, Mr. Luigi Castellione." She warned. "She is so obsessed with Samuel that she destroys every girl or woman being associated with him." She added in a solemn voice, full of disgust and annoyance. " Wow! So they really are a thing?" I asked her, surprised. I thought it was only a rumor, but now that Jenny confirmed it, I am dumbfounded. They look together in the magazines, but Samuel always has a stoic face every time she's beside him. Not the doting boyfriend everyone expected. " No, silly! She wanted Samuel so badly that she claims she owns him. But Samuel doesn't even look at her or call her names as he did to you." She snorted and shook her head. I smiled timidly and blushed a little. Samuel's actions are really giving me whiplash. He's acting more like a boyfriend than my soon to be boss. It's crazy. But if what Jenny said was right, I better stay away from him if that spoiled, rich Olivia is around. The least I need is trouble. I've been keeping it low ever since I left Italy. I don't want to blow up my cover and go crazy on her because we Italians are bat crazy if provoked.
