Chapter 4 - Curiosity

*Him* The first soul he collected from the ED was giving him a headache. He couldn't wait to shove him in a portal to the underworld, but he had to retrieve the other one first. "Hey, you! Yeah you in the black, why did you take me out of my body? I wasn't done with my life. So what I was shot? Just above me back in my body so they can patch me up and send me back on my merry way!" Ayden gritted his teeth. "It doesn't work like that. You were marked for death, so I came to collect. Simple." They got to the bedside of the next soul and Ayden watched with fascination as a beautiful girl stepped out of a portal. Both men stared transfixed.  However her beauty was over shadowed by her clumsiness. Ayden even though he was cloaked, bit his lip to stop himself from laughing as she sneezed from the glittery dust. Adyen admired her determination as she righted herself and continued with her task. He watched as she sprinkled the glittery dust into the child's eyes. The child suddenly looked peaceful but then the machines alas went off. Ayden uncloaked himself and lifted the child's soul out of its body. He winked at the girl, who was in shock. He tried to gain her attention by Thanking her, but he had to leave her to sort herself out as he now has to pass on the two souls he had gathered.  He cloaked himself and pulled both souls with him to the rooftop. As they touched down, the girl from the room had teleported to the roof too.  Ayden opened a portal for the first soul. The smell of sulfur reached his nostrils. He shoved the first soul through the portal before he could protest any further and closed it. He sighed as he got out his parchment. He marked him as 'Completed. Sent to hell. Soul complained alot. Gave me a headache.' As he was about to open a portal for the next soul, the girl behind him came to her senses.  "Hey you! He is my assignment. Put him back!" Ayden rolled his eyes. "Listen girly, I'm only doing my job too. See?" He lifted his death list parchment for her to see. He turned back to the soul. "Now if you don't mind, I have to pass him on." The girl stamped her foot. "I refuse. I need him back to complete my assignment!" Ayden was getting impatient. "From what I understand, you did your job. He died peacefully in his sleep, so now it's my turn. The kid had luekemia anyway, just let him go." The girl didn't know what else to say, so she stamped her foot and transported away. Ayden turned around back to the child's spirit.  "Mister, am I really dead?" Ayden sighed. He just wanted this shift over with. "Yeah, as a door nail. Now let's get you to the next faze of your....existence." he opened a portal and again it was bright. The child looked at Ayden. He was shaking. Ayden rolled his eyes cause clearly the child being dead, he won't be cold so he was shaking out of fear.  "Bloody hell." Ayden swore under his breath. "Come on kid. This bright light, right here, is for you. Don't you have family on the 'other side'?" The child timidly spoke up. "M..m..my grandpa." Ayden huffed. "Ok then. We'll get going, your grandpa is probably waiting for you." The child stop shaking and stepped towards the light. "Oh it's so warm." Ayden tried to nudge the child forwards. "yes, yes. Now move along..."the child nodded and took steps into the light. As his soul faded, Ayden closed the portal.  He whistled as he brought the parchment out and write 'Assignment complete. Soul delivered to heaven. ' down the bottom of the parchment, Ayden signed his name.  He held out his arm and a crow flew to him. Ayden rolled up the parchment and gave it to the crow. It squawked at him before snatching it up with its beak. As it flew off, Ayden yelled at it. "Don't get your feathers in a tither. Geez. And tell your boss he's welcome. I filled my quota for the shift."  He then flung his hood over his head before mumbling. "Stupid crows."  Ayden flew towards a church roof and sat with a leg either side of the cross that adorned the steeple, leaning on the top of it. As he thought about tonight's events, he twisted his family signet ring that was on his right thumb.  He wasn't sure what that girl was, but what he did know was that she was human and alive. She had a pure aura, it was the brightest yellow, it reminded him of a daisy. He wondered if he would ever see her again. He mumbled to himself. "What was she doing?" But then he remembered the dream dust.  "Oh so she's a sand women. Thank God she wasn't a banshee. " He chuckled. Banshees were a literal headache. Their screams are piercing, however they are beautiful. He smiled as he remembered on the times he dated one. Her name was Aahlea. She had red, curly but unruly hair. Her eyes were emerald green. Her skin was porcelain. She wore a golden band on her left forearm and her dress was see through.  They would have races to see who could get to the deceased person first.  If she beat him he would hear her scream for miles before he would catch up and reap the poor soul.  She would float about him untill he finished his work then they would passionately kiss untill they couldn't breath. Both being otherworldly beings and under the same boss, death, their copulation was never an issue and it was always fun. Once a Century he would see her, but always after a few days of being in each other's company they would argue and leave each other.  As he looked at his pocket watch and remembered the date, he knew he was due to see her in another twenty years.  As he tapped the cross with his thumb ring, he got curious. The Sandwomen was the first mortal that he had seen and not had to kill and it got him curious. How is it that they were able to cross paths like that? Most sand people ignore him as they do their work and then they leave, but this girl had the audacity to demand he return the soul even though she had finished her job. His curiosity led him to find her and observe her. He cloaked himself and flew off in search of her. She was a hard one to find because she wasn't on the verge of death her soul was hard to track, but after half an hour he found her yellow aura. It was like a beacon. He watched her fumble with her grimore as she opened it to find the teleportation spell.  She chanted the spell and stepped through the portal, it manifested in the ceiling and she fell on her face. He laughed so hard he nearly fell off the neighbouring roof. "Ha ha ha she is such a clutz!" He gripped his sides as he laughed so hard. He rubbed tears from his eyes. The girl got up and rubbed her forehead. She completed her assignment and signed it off. Before she summoned another portal.  Ayden stood up and floated towards the open portal. He stepped through it just as it was about to close. On the other side his broad chest collided with her face, as she turned around just as he stepped through. He had startled her.  "What are you doing here?!"
