"A human," Shaman had said again as Dr. Matata had taken her into the hospital wing for treatment.
"Maybe we should talk to Athens?" I finally suggested. it was about that time anyway to head to his study.
"Yes, I think we should bring it up." Shaman nodded then lightly placing his hand on my shoulder we moved through the hole in space and time to be at Athens' study.
"What news do we have to share today?" Athens chirped as he mixed his blood whisky drink.
"We found a human on Southern wolf land tonight." I blurted.
The tumbler in Athens's hand nearly clattered to the floor. it was saved by Johnny his mate. Athens whipped around., his eyes glancing at me and then to the bookshelf behind me. Not saying a word, he walked straight to that bookshelf. There he rummaged in multiple shelves and finally yanked a book out to flip quickly through its pages.
"I wasn't sure if I remembered right or not." Athens started as he looked up from the pages to look at all of us. "A legend had been passed down in southern wolf culture of a human. I am guessing the human is female?" Athens paused to look at Shaman and me.
We both nodded our heads in answer.
"She is to be part of that spy group I spoke of about Adele. That dragon-borne female I heard about too is also part of that group." Athens stood bringing the open book to both Shaman and me for us to see.
"A human of the low born class will wander to the boundary of the Southern wolf. There her gifts will be woken. She will be of great use to the spies of the King/Queen. She will live out her days among wolves who protect her gifts. Her mate will find her and be her biggest champion. A wolf of great breeding will only bow to the human girl who holds his heart."
I looked at Shaman, as he looked at me with raised brows. "Do we know the wolf who will be her mate?" Shaman asked.
"Nope." Athens popping the p in the word meant he would be watching the show with popcorn and candy.
"Well s**t," Johnny's voice piped up. We looked back at him as he brought Athens his drink. "Is she gonna get turned like me?"
Athens wrapped him in his arms and shook his head sadly. "No, she cannot be a wolf if she is human."
"Well, then why would the goddess mate her to a strong one?" Johnny seemed sincerely confused by this.
"None of us can say why the Goddess does what she does." Shaman answered. "But that girl has a perfect match in wolf form that is meant for her." He closed his eyes a moment and then sighed deeply. "We will make it a point to see which wolf is hers. The sooner she has protection the better." Shaman sighed again rubbing his face with his hands. It had been a very busy day for him.
"So I am going to guess she will be part of the spy group?" I leaned back onto the sofa.
"Yes I will come to test her and that dragon bore Tara tomorrow." Athens leaned against Johnny on their little cuddly chair.
"You won't be able to test her just yet." I threw it back to him.
Athens merely raised a brow waiting for me to answer his silent question.
"She was beaten to the point of passing out. Dr. Matata has her currently." I answered.
"Why was she beaten?" Athens's curious words rallied back.
"The were-cat I found her with had started whipping her once she had been tied to a tree.
" Where is this kitty?" Athens put his drink down.
"Likely still rotting on the forest floor where I left him and a chunk of his throat." I shrugged. Getting up I felt the need for a drink suddenly.
"Well done." Athens picked up his drink and switched the contents in the glass. "Did he put up much of a fight?" Athens's eyes glittered with a hidden agenda. I knew it well. He enjoyed violence, he wanted it to feed his little hidden need of his.
"He lunged at me switching to his cat. I rolled lifted my muzzle and took his throat pretty easily." I shrugged as I finished mixing my drink. Life didn't mean the same as it meant to others. My sister had to find a spot inside that worked for that. Same for my mother and my dad Joe. The only one who didn't compartmentalize it was my Uncle Hawk, Mortou, and Athens.
"Well, we needn't worry about him them." Athens giggled. "So what do we know of this girl?" Athens seemed to think there was more to it.
"She has dark hair I think," Shaman mentioned off handily.
"Tara followed her into the hospital," I added as an afterthought.
"She did, didn't she." Shaman looked at me a bit surprised.
I nodded, and took a sip of my whisky, "Well I will test Tara tomorrow. You said she is a strong wolf?" Athens looked at Shaman.
"She is Ben's daughter by a royal female," Shaman spoke, his silver eyes turning to me.
"Which female?" I raised an eyebrow. "Is she still in the court?"
"She is, but it was a hush-hush thing. Ben fell for a married woman's.charms." Shaman spoke quietly.
"Who?" I countered.
"Old Lobo's wife." Shaman sighed as he watched our reactions closely.
Old Lobos wife... The only one married to Lobos, that was killed by my uncle was a woman in her mid-thirties. she had married the old fart out of the family arrangement. When he died she went back to her family. Her family's last name was Chang. The Changs had moved back to their estate after Tvso had attacked. They had been silent for a long while. Never even showing up for the coup that my Uncle had come and slaughtered. "It was Andres's older daughter." I groaned out. That itch in my temple started slowly as I knew I had an incoming vision on the way.
