Chapter 6

"Nooo. It's boring," I whine to Jayla and Will. Jayla rears back with a gasp and squints at me with judgment. "How is a club boring? There's dancing and drinking and music and flashing lights! It's the opposite of boring and you don't have to back to work until next week!" I sigh. My partner Anthony won't let me come in because he's convinced I'm not fully recovered. "It'll be fun..." Jayla teases looking through my closet. Will sits next to me and makes his puppy dog face, to which I roll my eyes and push his forhead away. "I'll go, but I won't be happy about it." Two joyful cheers sound before I'm hit in the face with a red fabric, curtesy of Jayla. I spit my ruffled hair out of my face as I look at the body con dress with hesitation. I can't get out of this, but do I have to dress the part? "Put it on and we'll be downstairs," J says pulling Will with her. With a small shake of my head, I slip the dress on and look in the mirror. It's cut straight across with thin spaghetti straps to keep it up and though it covers below my bum appropriately, I know my parents wouldn't want to see me in this. Dead people don't want things, I remind myself. Clearing my head of such thoughts, I twist my hair into a low side bun with ruffled curls falling around to shape my face. Not bad. I use a bright red lipstick and some mascara to accentuate just enough without overdoing it and slip on a pair of red flats. If the skirt is above the knee, wear flats. Stay classy. I don't want to get mistaken for a hooker like poor Jayla was once. "Ready," I call descending the stairs to see Jayla whistle dramatically and Will just stare. "You look great," he whispers with a small smile. I thank him quickly and take in his casual outfit and Jayla's over the top blue ruffly party dress. "Are we ready to go?" They say yeah and we all get into will car since he has enough room and mine only seats two. This is going to be a long night. ••• So far it is. I don't want to loose all my senses, so I'm not chugging drinks like Jayla. Will has just enough to be able to drive later, but I stop at two shots. I'm a flirty drunk and it's embarrassing to remember the next morning. "Why don't we dance?" Jayla says pulling Will and I after her seventh shot. There aren't real words to this base music, it just seems to pump everyone up all on it's own and the green and red strobe lights finish the clubby feel. Well, that and being bumped into my bustling bodies. As per usual, I bounce and swing my arms above my head like I've seen so many people do before. It's all I know how to do really. After a minute, the music seems to vibrate through my bones and I get even more into it, swaying my hips and letting the shots take the edge off of any embarrassment I'd normally feel. That is until I crash into someone. "Oh! Sorry!" I cringe as the bearded man smiles and props me up with the support of his hands on my waist. He's average looking, but quite tall. "No problem sweetheart. Say, why don't you let me buy you a drink to apologize?" I'm not sure what he's apologizing for as I'm the one who bumped him, but looking back to see Jayla dancing with a stranger prods me to agree. I don't want to dance alone. The guy leads me to the bar after introducing himself. Andy, his name was. I told him I was Annie, just for fun. Nobody actually calls me that. Anymore. "I need two full glasses of Vodquila," Andy tells the bartender. I frown. If that what I think it is... "Don't you think that's a little strong?" I was expecting a shot, but Andy laughs and shakes his head. "Don't worry. I'll make sure your safe." Safe. Those were the words I'd heard come out of my firefighters mouth the day of the accident. He isn't here and even if he was, it's not his job to make me feel feel safe. Well... Technically it is, but not in this situation. I crave the safe feeling he gives me though, and I'll take it anywhere I can find it. Andy hands me a normal sized glass filled with the alcohol that I so willingly down in two sips. "Gah!" Andy chuckles and taps my chin affectionately. "You're adorable when you scrunch your face like that." I scrunch it again dramatically as he orders another round. "Come're kitten," he husks pulling me onto his lap with little effort. It's not fair that I'm smaller than everyone. "Cheers to the beginning of something f*****g amazing," Andy says before we down our drinks again. It takes four sips this time as my senses are dulled and I'm feeling a bit tired. "How much allolocolhall... Does it taeke to get someone drink?" I ask with a furrowed brow. Andy smiles widely and leans close to me so that our noses are touching. "I don't know kitten. You're pretty tiny, but I bet I could sober you up..." I smile widely and nod quickly. I hate coffee so anything to bring my senses back will be appreciated. Did he already order some food? Or may- I inhale in shock while my body stiffens, rendering me unable to close my eyes at the feel of Andy's lips pressing forcefully against mine. At least, they did for a moment.
