Ella’s POV
As soon as Bianca appeared, Zane turned away from me and started walking slowly towards her.
“It’s nothing baby, don’t worry about it,” he said to her.
“No, I want to know,” Bianca added, “What is it?”
Zane walked up to her and wrapped his arm around her shoulder.
“It’s nothing, I promise…”
He then turned back to look towards me while holding Bianca close to him.
“You keep your nose out of my business, or else…” he growled at me.
As the two of them started walking away together, Bianca turned her head to throw me a deadly glance. I could see the venom in her eyes as she stared me down from that distance. It was clear she didn’t like finding me with him like that.
I also suddenly noticed this bitemark on the back of her neck. Wait! He already marked her? Such a prick.
Why was I surprised though. Those two deserved each other.
I still felt humiliated by the fact that he rejected me, his true mate, and marked another to be his mate. But I was starting to realize that this might have been a blessing in disguise.
Zane was starting to disgust me. I didn’t want anything to do with him anymore. Bianca could have him for all I cared.
Unperturbed by the encounter, I walked out of that dark corner and back into the lounge where the party was going on. The music was smooth and people continued chatting, laughing and partying all over.
I was still in uniform and so I knew I had to get back to serving. The tray in my hand was empty now. All the glasses I had been carrying got thrown off when Zane pulled me away back there.
But the team at the counter wouldn’t know that. I’d just walk back there as if nothing had happened and get more glasses of champagne. If they knew that I had broken those, they’d have me and my parents pay for every last one.
While I walked up towards the counter, trying to calm myself down and act normal, Bianca suddenly appeared in front of me. She stood there, a distance away from me on my path. Her hands were on her hips and she was staring right at me with that venomous look in her eyes.
What did she want now…? Ugh.
“What were you two doing back there?” she snarled at me.
I so didn’t have time for this bs. And neither did I want to have time.
“It had nothing to do with you Bianca, now can you get out of my way?” I said.
We were both standing in the middle of the crowd of werewolves, and I really didn’t want to cause any kind of a scene.
“You are not going anywhere until you tell me what happened,” she said.
“Nothing happened. Can you…”
“It wasn’t nothing,” she cut me off, “Otherwise why would he take you all that way away from the party?” she continued.
I realized she was like a dog with a bone this one. She just wouldn’t let it go. And there was no way in hell that I was going to tell her that I had been rejected and humiliated by that prick. Instead, I saw a chance to give Zane a little taste of his own medicine, and so I didn’t think… I just took it.
“You wanna know what happened?… I f****d him. Okay? I f****d him and clearly he doesn’t want anyone to ever know, that’s why he was threatening me to not say anything to anyone,” I said.
“You did what?” she said.
“You heard me just fine, now move out of my way, I have things to do,” I said, pushing her slightly out of the way and walking forward.
Honestly, I was starting to worry she’d follow me and fight me or something, but when I turned to look at her she was just standing there, glued to the spot, with shock written all over her face. I didn’t wait around, I just walked all the way to the counter.
The guys at the counter refilled my tray with glasses of champagne without question and I quickly turned around to walk back into the crowd. As I was starting to serve again, I suddenly caught wind of a commotion at the front of the lounge where the officials were seated.
I walked to the side to get a clear view of the front and that’s when I saw what was happening. Bianca was causing a major scene on the raised stage in front of everyone. She was confronting Zane, and it seemed the two of them were arguing bitterly about something up there.
Wait… What!? Had she gone to confront him about what I’d told her?
I didn’t know why, but seeing the two of them at each other’s throats in front of everyone kinda felt good. It was so wrong because I had lied so hard, but dammit did it feel good. I was being such a drama queen tonight but I kinda liked it.
Maybe it felt so good because I had stood up for myself for the first time since all of this. Why did I have to be the one in pain and turmoil all the time, Zane deserved some of that as well.
Their fracas on the stage didn’t last too long however. Alpha Benjamin suddenly stood up. His intimidating Alpha aura always caused everyone to cower before him, and so Zane and Bianca had to calm down and sit.
Alpha Benjamin seemed uninterested in whatever had been going on between the two of them up there. He just started giving his speech about the upcoming Alpha naming of his son as if nothing was awry.
He called all the guests to attention. The music went mute and everyone turned their attention to the podium. There was a spotlight on him and the stage was raised high enough such that everyone could see him from wherever they were on the packhouse lounge.
As Alpha Benjamin started speaking over the sound system, I suddenly bumped into my parents. They stood together looking up at towards the front and listening to the Alpha. Both of them were in the red and black serving uniforms like I was, but they didn’t have any trays. I was the only one holding one right now.
“Honey, hey,” Mom said, giving me a gentle smile.
“Hey Mom,” I said.
“Are you alright, you look kinda down,” she added.
“I’m okay,” I replied.
“Cheer up baby, tonight is a big day for our pack,” Dad chipped in, “I have a feeling when Zane becomes Alpha in a few minutes he’ll continue his father’s legacy and keep this pack being one of the strongest in Locksbridge,” he added.
Yeah… right.
I felt nauseated at the thought that Zane would be an Alpha soon. Maybe it was really time for me to start thinking about leaving Silver Claw Pack for good. I was old enough to do it now. And I was obviously never going to feel any loyalty to this pack anymore… not with Zane as Alpha.
There was a short silence as I stood beside my parents, and we continued listening to Alpha Benjamin’s speech. Then suddenly, Mom wrapped her hand around my shoulder, making me turn to look at her.
She whispered…
“Honey, have you found him yet?”
“Found who?”
“Your mate,” she added.
I swallowed a hard lump in my throat.
“No,” I said, “No Mom… not yet,” I added.
“She has probably been keeping to herself like she always does dear,” I heard Dad say to Mom.
Mom then turned to look at me again.
“You can’t keep to yourself anymore honey… okay? You are not a little girl anymore, you're grown now. You should, you know, open up more and mingle with people, that’s how you'll find the one for you. This party is full of wolves from all over town and out of town. I’m sure he could very much be somewhere here tonight, your mate,” she continued talking.
I didn’t say anything. I didn’t want to.
If only they knew. If only they knew that I had already met my so-called mate and he turned out to be a piece of s**t. If only they knew that he was the same person we were all standing here waiting to celebrate.
The thought of it made me sick.
“Mom, I’mma go put this tray away, my hand is getting tired,” I said to her.
“Okay honey… and mingle, okay?” she said, as I walked slowly away from them.
I put the tray of glasses on a table and started walking away from where everybody was. It was about ten now and Alpha Benjamin was just about to name Zane the new Alpha. And I just couldn’t get myself to stand there and watch.
I walked slowly away, headed towards the back edge of the massive lounge area. Just as I was coming up towards the metal railings on the edge, I heard people clapping and cheering loudly. There were cheers and screams, and I even heard a couple of howls cutting across the air.
That meant Zane had now been named the new Alpha of Silver Claw Pack. That asshole. Now I had really no choice but to leave here and go find my way in some other pack. Leaving everything and everyone I’d ever known wasn’t going to be easy, but staying wasn’t an option anymore.
I stopped at the edge of the building and leaned gently onto the railings. I looked up at the sky and saw the moon up there. It wasn’t full tonight, it was half but it still looked beautiful. I hadn't even noticed that there had been a moon today.
Staring up at it, I felt my inner wolf Snow come out to stare at it too through my eyes. She had been so down ever since we were rejected by Zane, but looking at the half moon in the sky right now seemed to liven her up a bit.
It felt amazing feeling her come to life like that. Our connection was getting better by the day.
“You’re not one for the crowds, are you?” I suddenly heard a gentle voice speak to me.
The weird part was that I didn’t actually hear it with my ears, it was more like in my head. It was so strange, and it made me turn and look around.
That was when I landed my eyes on him… the most beautiful man I had ever seen. His hairline, his chiseled jaws and his muscular chest made me lose my breath for a minute.
He was smiling, and it appeared that he had just mindlinked me. I hadn't even tried out my mindlink yet up until that moment, and yet he seemed to connect with my mind so easily.
His warm smile made me smile. His gaze was trained straight at my eyes, making me both nervous and kinda excited at the same time. No one had ever looked at me like that before.
“I’m Phoenix,” he said, out loud this time.
His voice was deep. It rolled like the thunder, and it seemed to be getting the attention of my wolf. I couldn’t tell exactly what he was making me feel like, but I could feel that Snow was reacting to him in some way.
He slowly reached out his arm towards me and continued looking into my eyes.
I didn’t hesitate. I went ahead and shook his hand gently.
“I’m Ella.”
He gently kissed the back of my hand, making me broaden my smile.
Who was he?
