Familiar Winter
Maddie and I successfully managed to reach the airport early, I was worried we would miss our flight because Maddie couldn't find her favorite black jacket, her older brother gave it to her so she treasures it, she never goes on an outing without it.
"It's illegal to be up this early", Maddie yawned.
"I'll make it up to you", I kissed her hand, we were holding hands as we walked through the airport. We had to print out our boarding passes.
"Oouuu, I like the sound of that", we reached the front desk.
"Names", a very attractive man asked us.
"I'm-"
"Madeleine, but you can call Maddie on weekends", Madeleine cut me off to flirt with the man.
"Nice to meet you, Maddie, I'm Liam" he gave a warm smile, "and your friend is?".
"Devenity, my name is Devenity", I smiled and handed him both our ID's.
Liam took our ID's and started printing out our boarding passes, "that's a very unique name, what does it mean?".
"I'm not so sure, but thanks".
Our boarding passes were printed out almost immediately.
"Thanks for your time, you can head over to security now", Liam smiled.
"What? You won't give me your number?", Maddie winked.
"I'm sorry but I'm seeing someone, have a nice flight".
"Bummer", Maddie rolled her eyes.
We made our way to security, a TSA agent checked our boarding passes to our ID's and we went through a security check.
"It's not his fault you're a flirt".
"It's always the attractive one's, anyway, his dimples weren't that cute anyway", she sulked
We successfully passed through the security check, now our luggage had to be sent through an x-ray machine while we were being examined by a wand scanner.
I checked our boarding passes to find our Terminal and gate number, "we're at A5, let's go".
We sat down in the waiting area, Maddie immediately leaned on my shoulder and closed her eyes, I just took my phone out of my pocket and started playing Candy Crush.
*****
"Passengers for flight BA 652 to Minnesota, please, go to gate A5"
A voice announced through a speaker, Maddie and I's flight to Minnesota was ready to go, I shoved Maddie's arm to wake her up.
"Hmm?", she yawned.
"Let's go", I rose from my seat and picked up my luggage.
"This whole flying process sucks", Maddie caught up to me.
"Why?", we stood in line for boarding, a gate attendant was at the entrance waiting to check our boarding passes, "here you go", I handed them to her.
"Booking a flight, waiting for it, packing for it, getting your passport ready".
"Is that all?", I sighed.
"Driving to the airport", I rolled my eyes as she went on, "waiting for your flight, finding your seat and praying it's not next to an elderly person or in front of a stupid kid and finally sitting through an entire flight.
"It's only 2 hours".
"Longest 2 hours of my life".
"You're all clear", the woman smiled, we walked down the hallway leading to our plane.
"And don't get me started on the luggage process, like why check my bags? Is it because I'm from England, huh?", Maddie waved her arms in the air.
"Stop making a scene, if anything I should be the one complaining about my bags being checked", I playfully rolled my eyes.
"Devenity, you are the most beautiful brown-skinned girl I have ever met, no one should ever tell you otherwise, you and your entire race don't deserve the stereotype", Maddie was really tired, she only goes all out with speeches when she's tired.
"Thank you", I kissed her forehead.
Maddie is right, the whole flying process does suck, but it'll all be worth it at the end of the day.

Maddie and I finally took our seats on the plane, to Maddie's delight we weren't sitting next to any elderly people or in front of any stupid kid. I sat by the window because I loved the view of the clouds, it was aesthetically pleasing. I braced myself for lift off and we were in the sky.
"A whole two hours", Maddie groaned and rested her head on my shoulder.
"Yes but it's a whole two hours of snacks, warm drinks and S1 of the Vampire Diaries", I gave a cheeky smile.
"You're just lucky I'm head over heels in love with Damon Salvatore".
"I thought you watched the show because of Bonnie".
"I watched the show because of both of them, I could be Bonnie, the cool sidekick".
"The sidekick that deserved the main role in my opinion", I put my laptop on airplane mode and scrolled through my folder of series.
"We can all agree to that, but we just have to take what we are given, if you had to choose, what supernatural creature would you be?".
"If they did exist I would definitely be a witch or hybrid, something like that".
"I think you'd suit as a hybrid, or a Lycan maybe, yeah, that would be cool".
"And you, I think you'd be a vampire", I laughed.
"Ew, don't group me in with those pale-skinned bloodsuckers", Maddie hated vampires, she preferred beefier creatures.
"Earth to pale skin girl", I rolled my eyes.
"I'm not pale, I'm porcelain-skinned".
"There's a difference?", I raised an eyebrow.
"Of course there is, Google it", she laughed.
I love bringing Maddie along on trips, she's fun, supportive, ridiculous and caring, I need her in my life, she's like a sister to me.

After a 2 hour and 27 minutes flight, Maddie and I finally arrived in Minnesota. The weather here and the weather in New York is really different, it's so cold my nose hurts.
"The bloody weather!", Maddie yelled.
"Welcome to Minnesota", a random person yelled back making Maddie and I laugh.
"Aren't the locals friendly? Come on let's hail a taxi".
Fortunately for us, we didn't have to look too far, a taxi parked right in front of us.
"You're a lucky charm you know that?", Maddie opened the car door and I sat in the backseat.
"I know", I winked. Maddie got into the taxi and snuggled close to me.
"Where to ladies?", the taxi asked.
"I'm not too familiar with this place but I think we're going to Moonblight", I replied.
"Moonblight? What on earth are you going to do there?", the taxi driver sounded shocked.
"Um...visiting a friend, why?".
"That place is weird...but if you want to go I won't stop you", the taxi driver shrugged.
"Hold on, you just can't say something like that then drive us there", Maddie protested.
"It's fine, we'll be fine", I held Maddie's hand.
We remained quiet in the back seat as the driver drove onto the main road.

Minnesota is pretty awesome, I looked out the window and watched as the snow fell, Maddie was asleep on my shoulder, I've lost count of how many times she's fallen asleep on me during this flight.
"Aside from Moonblight, what other towns do you not recommend someone to stay?", I asked the taxi driver trying to make small conversation.
"Oh there's a lot, Minnesota is a pretty weird place, Withervale, Hells gate, Hope falls and silver stone creek, stay away from those towns".
"Those are some odd names".
"The locals made them, based on what they've seen".
"Based on what they've seen? I wonder what they found in hells gate".
"According to my friend, Will, it was something so bad they have a sign right at the gate telling you 'trespass at your own risk'".
"Do people even live there?".
"Only psychos".
I looked outside the window again, we passed by a huge lake and all of a sudden my heartbeat quickened, I didn't understand why I felt that.
"How much longer till we reach our destination?".
"About an hour or so, getting bored already?".
"No, I'm just really excited to be here".
"Oh, are you visiting a relative?"
"Childhood friend, his name is Damon"
"Isn't that sweet".
"Yeah, he's practically family", I didn't want to give 'that' kind of impression, "he and this boozer sleeping on my shoulder are the only family I have".
"What happened to your biological family? If you don't mind me asking".
"It's alright, I don't really know what happened to them, all I know is I've been orphaned since childhood, can't remember the rest".
"That's sad and strange, well, at least you found friends that became family, everyone needs those kinds of friends".
"Indeed they do, what's your name? I just realized I'm getting to know you but I don't even know your name".
"Gulliver".
"As in Gulliver's travels?", I laughed
"Everyone says that", he laughed too.
"At least your named after someone well known, my name is weird, Devenity, I don't know where it originates from".
"That's a pretty exotic name, I think I'll give my future daughter that name".
"Aww, I'm honored".
Maddie moved from my shoulder and sat upright, "What did I miss", she yawned.
"Your friend is pretty interesting"
"This is her on a good day".

In an hour and thirty minutes we reached our destination, we passed by a sign that said "Moonblight population: 1,269".
My heartbeat quickened again, like the time we passed by the lake but this time quicker, I didn't understand it, maybe I'm just nervous because I'm about to meet Damon.
"Moonblight, one of the creepiest towns in Minnesota", Gulliver said.
"It looks pretty average to me", Maddie looked out the window.
"Yeah it does, what makes the town so creepy?", I looked out the window too, the town looked basic, like nothing much happens around here. As we drove I could see some convenience stores, a playground for children, a police station and some houses.
"I've never really looked into it but according to the occupants of this town it seems they have frequent wild dog attacks".
"Wild dogs? What the hell is a wild dog", Maddie looked to the front.
"I don't know, that's how the officials described them, the wild dogs don't exactly attack humans but they do take out a lot of life stock".
"Strange...um our house is on street number 45".
I stayed quiet through the rest of the ride, my heart pace wasn't going down, it quickened the more we drove, what's wrong with me? This is definitely more than nervousness.
Something about everything I was seeing seemed familiar, did I see them on social media? Maybe in a magazine or newspaper...ugh who still reads newspapers.
"And here you are", Gulliver said, he stopped the car in front of a beige house with a brown roof, it was medium-sized, it also had a white fence surrounding it.
I squinted my eyes and looked closely at the house we'd be staying in, my heart finally stopped pounding but I saw a flash of light for 2 seconds, it was like I was about to remember something but it got erased.
