Nine: Post Haste

Post Haste Nine: Antonio Stepping outside I take a lung full of fresh air. I’m in the alleyway of the club. Everything I just learned from the rat who I thought was a man has me nervous. Everything she just told me has the dots connecting in my head. Our prominent Mayor’s son went missing about five years ago. He hasn’t been seen since. So, if Ilaria had seen it happen that would explain why the family wants her dead. I’m just surprised that it took them so long order it done. Maybe she has been hiding well and they just now found out where the FBI was hiding her. I look across the street and see the bodega. Walking quickly, I get there as fast as I can. I have to get the ball rolling or my family will be next on the hit list. I quickly buy a new burner phone tearing into the packaging I boot it up. Walking quickly down the street I dial Rosso number. It only rings once as his voice comes over the line. I don’t waste a minute as I lowly say. “Get Mater out now, they know.” I end the call pulling out the chip, I break the phone in half and throw it away. Slipping the card into my pocket. It takes me about an hour to get to my Mater’s apartment. It pissed me off that I couldn’t find a cab and had to walk most of the way. I even had to take public transportation which is just nasty. As least I know cabbies clean their cabs daily, or at least I hope they would. Public transportation you never know what germs you are sitting on. Finally, I exit the bus and start the two-block walk to get to Mater’s place. As I get closer to the apartment, I hear screaming and things crashing. Running the rest of the way through the alleyway and into the apartment. What I see has me dumbfounded. Ilaria is standing by the stove throwing glasses and plates at my brother. My Mater is standing in the hallway laughing her bum off. “What the hell is going on here?” I say the moment that it is quiet enough for them to hear me. “This crazy b*tch is trying to kill me.” Rosso says, looking at me angerly as he turns to go to my Mater’s side, grabbing her luggage. I look back at Ilaria whose chest is heaving violently as her breaths are coming fast. Her eyes are snapping that bluish green fire at me as she holds a knife out towards me. Without showing any emotion on my face I quickly walk towards her, disarming her. I lean close to her ear as she wiggles to get out of my hold. “We need to go now. They know where you are at and with whom.” “Take Mater’s car. She will be coming with me.” I look over, nodding towards my brother. Ilaria goes limp in my arms as I look down and see her cover her face, her shoulders shaking. I hear the light sobs escape her. “Take the box.” I glance over to my Mater as she nods to the table where the box, she gave me earlier still sits with her car keys now on top. “Take care, filius” I watch as my brother leads her out of the apartment. “How can you trust that man with your own mother. He works for them, and you just let him take her. You’re a monster.” I look down at her teary eyes. I don’t answer her as I drag her to the table grabbing the box up with one hand, holding her arm with my other. I will not be the reason why my angel loses her too. It is bad enough that I’m the reason she seen her grandmother on the floor in a pool of blood. Dragging Ilaria outside with me. I’m surprised she doesn’t put up a fight. I uncover my Mater’s car in the back ally leaving Ilaria standing there staring at me. “Why don’t you talk” I look up at her as I open the passenger door for her. I just tap my throat; she seems to get it. Her face softens towards me as if she is thinking if she wants to actually trust me. “Please.” I whisper out so I don’t hurt my throat. Staring at me for a minute she finally nods her head once and gets in. I breathe a sigh of relief as I walk around the car, getting in the driver’s seat. It’s going to be a long drive. It takes a couple of hours to fight through traffic and cross the bridge to Manhattan. There are still some safe places I know of. Many things I have to do just to make sure to cover my tracks and hers. I know that they found her probably because of her purse. It must have slid somewhere I didn’t see. Then because of how I killed the Tracer sent after me they know that she is with me now. This sh*t just keeps getting more complicated. I pull to the back of a parking lot and turn off the car. “Come.” I whisper as I get out. As soon as she is by my side, I throw the keys as far as I can after wiping them off with my shirt. It makes a splash as they land in the water. “Are you serious?” I glance over at her and see the unbelievable look on her face. I grunt and start walking away. If she follows, she follows if not it is on her right now.
