Chapter Thirty-Four

1512 Words
Third Person's POV "So, Mrs. Miller, we all agree that the child was born and you were indeed pregnant. Why then are you preventing the father, my client from seeing or getting close to his son?" Mark asked sternly. "Because he is not the father." she seethed. "What do you mean he is not the father? Does that mean that you lied to my client?" "No, I didn't lie to him." She simply answered with no intention of explaining further. "Mrs. Miller will you stop acting weird and tell us what you meant when you said he is not the father if you didn't lie to him that he was?" She didn't reply, she stood quietly as if she didn't hear his question. "Mrs. Miller, can you please answer the question?" The judge asked. "I lost the baby on the night he beat me up and dumped me in the bush. It was a miracle i  survived. When I woke up at the hospital, I was surprised my tummy had gone down, instead of it getting bigger." Flashback ( Liana's POV) "Hey princess you are awake, are you okay?" A pleasant man asked. I later found out he is Doctor Martins, the doctor assigned to me. I couldn't talk I just stared at him the whole time he was examining me. The hospital looked expensive, I can not afford it. That was my major worry. And who even brought me here. Doesn't the person know that I am a peasant? My question was answered when a familiar face came to visit me. It turns out the doctor informed him that I was awake. I was told I have been in a coma for two months and they had nearly taken me off life support but Heath didn't agree to it. "She is such a strong woman Mr. Miller. She didn't even scream." Doctor Martins who was checking my pulse said to Heath who only smiled. I didn't know what they were talking about until my eyes lingered on my tummy to see it flatter than I expected it to be.  "W-wh-what- where is my baby?" I asked panicked  "If you will excuse me, I will leave you two to talk." "Heath where is my baby what happened to my baby?!" "He didn't need to answer me, I could see the answer clearly in his eyes." "Noo! noo!nooo!. This can't be happening to me. Noooooo! My baby, no, no please tell me what I am thinking is not true. Tell me my baby is strong and well and that she is in  the nursery." He took his eyes off me. Only then did I realize that I have really lost the baby. "I am sorry Lia, we couldn't save her." "Noo! No please nooo!" "What do you mean you couldn't save her, but you saved me? You could have as well left me to die." The pain in my chest was heavier than a ship's anchor and I couldn't do anything because I can't move. "You had lost too much blood. It was either you or the baby." "So you decided whether my child should die or live? Who the hell are you to take such a decision?!" "Get out! Get out! I yelled for him to leave yet he didn't. "I was conflicted but I didn't have to choose as the baby died shortly we got here. You were bleeding and when they examined you, the baby was gone." "Heath!! This can't be happening to me. She was all I have in this world." I sobbed like I have never done before. How am I going to move on from this? Will I ever heal?  "Please kill me. Let me die also." "No, you will not die. You have to live and be strong. You will go through this successfully. You have your whole life ahead of you. You have to fight for your future. Your baby is in a better place. What you have to do is to be strong and one day you will have more than you ever wanted." "H-H-Heath" I struggled to say. There was a lump in my throat which my voice come out as hoarse. "Shhh, it's okay. You are okay now." End of flashback. I know, I am strong and I have been stronger since that day but more importantly, I wanted to be strong now yet I couldn't hold the tears that immediately gathered at the corner of my eyes. I used the back of my eyes to wipe the tears and walked out of the box when Megan gestured me to. I returned to my seat and she offered me a handkerchief. "Are you alright?" "I am. Thank you." "Well, Mrs. Miller, that was a touching story but this is the court of law, not a movie theatre. We can not believe what you are saying without evidence. So we beseech you to present to the court a DNA result to support your story. We will be expecting that at the next hearing. For now, this court is adjourned to the fourteenth of August." The judge closed the meeting and exited the room. One by one, the jury also left leaving just the four of us. My attention was diverted to someone who was clapping. "Wow, just wow, I never thought you are this good at lying. You have beaten me to my own game congratulations." The scoundrel mocked. He had a stupid smirk on his face which I wished beyond everything to wipe off. "Don't mind him, let's go." Megan advised. I know better than to listen to this lunatic. He is laughing at me now. But he who laughs last laughs best. I picked up my purse and walked off. "Walking off is what you know best. You are too weak Liana. Six years and you still can't stand up to me. What a shame. I thought this new appearance of yours will be accompanied by some level of strength but you are the same old Liana, who succumbs to my every touch and authority. Just accept that you have lost this battle. We all know that Junior is my child. And who even gives a child a ridiculous name such as Junior." I halted, balling my hand in a fist. I was trying so damn hard not to put him in his place. I know he is trying to intimidate me so I can act violent but too bad I won't give him that satisfaction. "His name is Heath Miller Junior, how dumb can you be? And he is not your son. You can only wish from afar that he is." I said angrily through gritted teeth.  "We will see about that princess. I just pray you have the strength to see me taking your only child away from you just like you kept him away from me." I walked away with my head held high, not letting his stupid remarks intimidate me. I could feel Megan walking right behind me so I relaxed. "Don't listen to that man. I now believe your story and if indeed he did all that, I will not rest until he pays for his crimes. I always thought highly of Mr. Smith but I never knew he is such a devil." "Thank you, Meg. I am grateful. I am exhausted. Are we done here? I will love to go home to rest." "Yes we are. We will meet tomorrow to talk about the DNA. I should also go now. I have another hearing in an hour." It was a miracle that I drove home safely that day because my mind was occupied to the extent that my focus was not on the road. "Hi babe!" Heath called out raising his head from his laptop. He was sitting in the living room with a bowl of snacks by his side. "Don't hi babe me mister. I am so mad at you!" "What! what did I do?." He dumbly asked only adding to my fury. He walked up to me, trying to hug me. "What did you do? are you seriously asking me this question? You missed the court hearing that is what you did!" I yelled at him. "Oh about that, I am sorry. Annie was not feeling well so I took her to the hospital." What did he just say?  "Annie? as in Junior's Nanny?" "Yeah, she was unwell." "So what do I care? Are you her father! I needed your support back there Heath! I needed you to hold my hands when those vultures were ridiculing me, making me believe that I have lost the case against them. It's our son we are talking about. If his nanny was sick you could have let a driver take her to the hospital!" "I am sor............" "Heath, can you please dry my hai............" A half-naked Annie walked into the room holding a hair drier. The words were caught up in her throat when she saw me. Why is she approaching my husband dressed like that?
