Emmet
“For a death river, it looks pretty cool.” I jokingly say.
A hearty laugh rips through Athena’s chest and I can’t help but smile at the sound of it. I’d love to hear it more often.
“Just don’t touch it, whatever you do.”
“Concerned for my mortality dear?” I tease and I can imagine her rolling her eyes. I play with a ringlet on her head. “I like your hair like this.”
“Thanks, I don’t usually straighten it. It was all Alice’s idea.”
“Who’s Alice?” I question.
“My friend, I don’t like to call her my slave but she’s sworn to me.”
“You’ll have a whole pack full of wolves sworn to you one day, Luna Queen.”
“Just Athena is fine for now, thank you.”
“Ok just Athena, have you thought about me joining the pack?” I prod.
She huffs. “I suppose so but you’ll need to work your ass off.”
“Can do. Like I said, give me two days and I’ll be back here. Actually, do you think you can send someone to collect me and my belongings? I don’t drive.” I embarrassingly admit.
She turns around to face me and it’s then I’m acutely aware of our completely naked bodies so close together.
“Three conditions.” She says holding up one finger, then two, then three. “Number one, you get your license. Number two, you cut your hair and number three, you don’t tell anyone yet about us being mates.”
“You don’t like my hair?” I feign being stabbed in the chest.
She shrugs a shoulder. “People will take you more seriously with a better haircut.”
“Hmm ok fine, whatever. Why can’t I tell anyone we’re mates?”
“It’s dangerous. You’re a fresh wolf with no training and if people were to find out about you, they may try to eliminate you.”
“Insanely morbid but I see your point. I promise I won’t tell anyone.” I swear to her.
“We should probably get back. Your family might be wondering where you are.” She says solemnly, like she doesn’t want this moment to end.
The rain slows to a sprinkle and a drop runs down her nose. My tongue darts out to lick it off and my eyes widen in surprise of what I just did. She smiles beautifully at me before our foreheads rest together.
“You are so damn gorgeous.” I whisper.
“Come back to me.” She whispers back.
“I will.” I vow.
Athena shifts into Anika before taking off into the trees. Zeus takes over, my second shift not as painful as the first. I follow her scent back to the pack house, slowly to avoid suspicion.
My family waits for me by the car with my suit. I shift back and haphazardly dress before jumping in the car.
“Did you find your mate?” Eliza asks me.
My promise to Athena comes to the front of my mind. “What, no?”
“You seemed pretty friendly with the Alpha Kings daughter.” Dad states as he begins to drive away.
I look back at the pack house and see my beautiful mate on a balcony on the top floor, waving at me.
“Just trying to be a friendly rogue.” The word sounds bitter in my mouth and unease builds in my chest as we drive further and further away from the Blood River pack and my mate.
Athena
Dread fills my body from head to toe as soon as Emmet leaves the pack lands. Our newly formed bond is stretching to its limits the further away he moves.
I need to follow him, now. Except I can’t leave the pack lands alone. There’s only one person I trust enough to come with me.
Dressed in only a robe, I run down the hall to Apollo’s room. His door is unlocked like usual and he’s snoring obnoxiously in his bed. I throw a pillow at his face.
“Wake up Apollo!” I yell, announcing my presence.
He rolls over and puts said pillow over his head. “Go away! Do you know what time it is?”
“Why does the time matter? If your Luna wants something, the Beta needs to stand the f**k up and listen!”
“Alright you made your point.” He sits up in bed, shirtless.
“Please tell me you have pants on.” I roll my eyes.
“Hey, you’re the one that came in here in the middle of the night. I like to sleep naked.” Apollo argues back.
“Waiting for your mate to find you naked so you don’t have to waste time removing your clothes?”
“Damn you’re smart. What do you need anyway?”
“I need to leave the pack lands.”
“Right now?” He asks seriously.
“Yes now, let’s go.” I rush out the door and he at least has some brains to throw on his robe before following me into the elevator.
We rush out of the pack house and immediately shift. The guards open the gates without question and we run as fast as we can to catch up to Emmet and his family.
“Where are we going?” Apollo asks in my mind.
I look over at my Beta’s wolf Levi. “To follow my mate.”
