Chapter Three - Stand on your own two feet.
"What do you mean you quit your job?' Lana retorted as she hovered over Ava with her arms crossed. I thought we were best friends!" she growled. Ava stood there stunned. "What in the world is that supposed to mean! We ARE best friends!" Ava growled back. They both locked eyes with each other in a heated staredown, whilst the room fell into a heavy silence. Lachlan then placed a hand on Lana's shoulder. He was trying to calm the tension in the room but soon regretted it as Lana quickly pulled away from him and stormed out of the room. Slamming the door shut.
"What the f**k was that!" Ava snapped as she pointed her index finger towards the closed bedroom door. Lachlan's gaze followed her finger to where she was pointing then turned back to her, shrugging his shoulders. "I don't know.' he replied. but you both need to sort this out" he murmured. Ava glanced between the door and Lachlan before feeling defeated. "Yeah, I'll talk with her but not now. I still need to have a shower" she replied. Lachlan took that as a hint, gave her a soothing hug, and then took off towards his bedroom. Leaving Ava to deal with her thoughts.
In all the years she had known Lana, she had never seen this side of her. The side that made Ava feel powerless and small. Ava had already felt that way and has been, for a very long time. However, she never expected to feel that way from her best friend. Someone she thought would protect her. "Did I do something wrong?" Ava thought to herself as she paced the room. "Had I not been a great friend?" she thought again whilst pulling on her hair. Anxiety soon crept up, making Ava's heart thump. She reached for her laced black underwear and her white crop top then made her way toward the bathroom. Once she entered the bathroom, she placed her clothing onto the corner of the ceramic bathtub they hadn't used in a long time before peeling each layer she had on off. Steam soon filled the bathroom after Ava turned on the hot water. She let it run for a few seconds before turning the cold water tap on. Once she adjusted the temp of the water, she slid in underneath the showerhead, letting the warm water cascading down her body. She sighed to herself as if she felt a large weight had been pulled from off her shoulders. Thereon, Ava scrubbed her body clean, she stayed until the waters ran cold before she hopped out. Out of the shower, she felt relatively warm. There was still steam lurking in the air but the smell of her Lavender body wash invaded her nostrils. Bringing her to feel relaxed and refreshed.
She reached for a red towel that was hanging up behind the bathroom door. Slung it around her body, crossing each corner over the other, and tucked one side of the corner under her armpits. Then she reached for another towel that was hanging up behind the bathroom door and wrapped that damp blue towel around her soaking wet hair. In her head, she started humming a tune. It was a song that her brother Simon would sing to her to get her to sleep when she was little. A song that she came to love after her brother passed away.
Ava's brother, Simon Rodgers was only seventeen years old when he passed away in a car accident. He was a young talented guitarist with a dream to play in a rock band. They were also popular with the ladies but an Idol and hero to Avery. These two together were like two peas in a pod. Where ever Simon went, Avery was sure to follow. Though, Simon also had a dark side. He loved the feel of being high and drunk whilst tasting the blood of women he hit. He loved the way that they screamed and cried. Loved the way they cowered at his feet whilst he spat in their hair before laying a punch to their face. He loved the sound of their bodies cracking too. He was dangerous and ruthless but still a hero in Avery's eyes. He had never laid a finger on Avery. She held his heart and he would kill anyone that would dare lay a finger on her.
Everybody in his town knew who Simon Rodgers was and everybody in that town quickly forgot him the moment his casket lid closed as if he never existed. Though the only person who never forgot Simon Rodgers was his sister Avery and to this day she still thinks about him.
Ava started rubbing moisturizer cream on her legs whilst she sang the song her brother once sung. "The moons watching over you and I am here too. Whenever you get scared or feeling blue. Just know that I am here, I am here too" she smiled. Once she was done moisturizing her legs, arms, face, and body. She quickly dried her body with the towel she had on. Then placed on her black laced underwear; her grey mini shorts she wore to the shower and the white crop top. She rubbed the condensation off the mirror with her towel and checked herself out before exiting the bathroom. Out in the hall, it was fairly quiet. It is a short walk to the kitchen from the bathroom but Ava noticed Lana's room light was on.
"Alright, Ava! This is your chance to apologize!" she whispered as she pulled the towel off her head and threw it into the washing basket that stood between the bathroom door and Lana's room. "You got this!" she muttered. Ava sucked in a deep breath, then let it out slowly before lightly tapping on Lana's room door. "WHAT!" she heard Lana yell from the other side. "I-I-UH-I just want to talk. Can I come in, please?" Ava asked. Ava thought of a million situations in her head of what could happen once Lana opens the door. She thought of possible outcomes that would happen if Lana didn't open her door. Ava sucked in a deep breath, exhaling it through her nose as she waited.
One minute passed by, then two, then three. Ava's closed fist fell to her side as she waited patiently but she heard nothing. She didn't hear Lana's footsteps approach the door. So, she took that as a hint and began to walk away. Suddenly, the door burst open and Lana's hand quickly grabbed onto Ava's arm "Where are you going?" Lana questioned with a hint of sadness in her voice. "Uh, I was going to head to the kitchen" Ava replied whilst her gaze snapped to Lana's hand that was still wrapped around her arm. Lana looked at her hand that was gripped around Avery's arm before dropping her hand to her side. "Well are you coming in?" Lana asked as she opened her door wider for Ava to step in. Waving her in like a waiter would wave at you to enter their restaurant. Ava stood there hesitantly for a brief moment before reluctantly walking in.
As she stepped into Lana's room, she took everything in. From the grey coloured curtains to the red velvet makeshift king bed that sat in the middle of the room. To the left side of Lana's room had an ensuite bathroom and on the right-hand side was the walk-in wardrobe. Lana had the first pick of the rooms when they first moved in. So, of course, she got the biggest room in the house.
Ava's mouth gaped open whilst her eyes grew wide. "This is your ROOM?" Ava retorted as she made her way to Lana's red velvet king bed. Her hands slowly skimmed over Lana's bed, absorbing the feel of it. A smile started forming on her lips as she thought of something she wanted to do.
"Ava! Don't you dare!" Lana snapped by then it was too late. Ava took a run-up towards Lana's bed then she jumped, both feet off the ground and landed face down onto Lana's bed. Ava started laughing as she wrapped herself in Lana's blankets like a little kid who had just received candy for the first time. Lana stood there with her arms crossed before she gave up and joined her best friend on the bed. They both started laughing together, tickling each other like the good old days before they both laid there, staring at the ceiling, breathing heavily.
A few minutes later as their breathing settled. Lana pushed herself off the bed and walked toward her bathroom, closing the door midway. "Lana?" Ava called out but Lana did not say a word back. Suddenly, the bathroom door burst open and Lana walked out holding a white stick.
"What's that?" Ava questioned. Lana smirked. "Well, you know how I have been acting weird lately. Snapping at you and stuff. Well, I took a pregnancy test today. Actually, I took a few just to make sure and I-Uh, I am pregnant" she grinned. Then placed the pregnancy stick in Ava's hand for her to see. Ava clasped one hand over her mouth whilst she looked at the pregnancy test with the other. She couldn't believe her eyes. She let out a loud gasp. "Really? Your-Your pregnant!" she gasped, dropping the pregnancy stick and clutching her mouth with both hands. Lana smiled as tears begun to fill her eyes. "Yes!,' she nodded. I tried to tell you when I got home but when I saw you and Lachlan. I completely forgot what I was meant to say" she confirmed.
Ava gasped then let out a scream. "I CAN'T BELIEVE YOUR f*****g PREGNANT!" she yelled as she pulled Lana into a tight hug whilst jumping up and down. Tears of joy streaming down both their faces. Suddenly, the door burst open and in walks a groggy Lachlan. "What the hells going on? I could hear you screaming from the lounge room" he muttered while rubbing the sleep away from his eyes.
"Omg! Lana tell him!" Ava smiled. "Tell me what!" he replied. "I'm pregnant!" Lana beamed as she rubbed her stomach. Lachlan looked down at Lana's tummy then Lana's face and said "Congratulations, now shut the f**k up. I'm trying to sleep" he snapped, slamming the door shut after he exited. They both rolled their eyes and continued jumping for joy.
Lana and Avery stayed up for hours planning a baby shower. Lana was still early in her pregnancy but that didn't stop them both from planning for the babies future. They both talked about Lana's boyfriend and how he would take news and they also talked about moving to a bigger home before the baby is born. Suddenly, Lana bought up a job opportunity for Ava.
"Ava, look. I love you ok but I think it's time you stand on your own two feet,' she muttered. I'm about to become a mother and I can't always worry about you whilst I try to take care of my child. It's just not fair" she gleamed as she squeezed both her hands in Ava's. Ava nodded with a smile. 'She's right!' she thought to herself.
"So, in saying that. How about you work with us. Well not for us precisely, but my boss" she smiled, wiggling her eyebrows at Ava. Immediately Ava dropped her hands from out of Lana's hands. "WHAT!" she growled.
"My boss is looking for a nanny and since you-" she said before Ava interrupted, holding a hand up to silence her. "I don't f*****g think so! Do I have desperation written across my head, Lana! No!" she hissed. Lana begged Ava again. "Please Ava Please!" she begged, giving Ava puppy dog eyes.
Ava glared at Lana and shook her head. "No!" she retorted then crossed her arms across her chest. "Please!,' she begged. I will do anything. Anything!" she muttered but Ava wasn't letting out.
Lana's boss is a cold-hearted man, who also happens to be a billionaire, raising a kid on his own. His family possesses half of New York City and he additionally has an identical twin sibling named Henry.
Ava met Lana's boss Harlan, Well before Lana began working for him. She met Harlan at a club called Saints. Be that as it may, Ava saw him on many occasions after when Lana landed the position of being his P.A. She'd seen him around the bistro she once worked at, at that point at the gym centre one morning and again in the lift but it was as if they never met. Even when she said 'hi'.
"The answer is still no Lana! I refuse to work with your boss!' Ava roared. Even if he paid me six million dollars and a private jet. The answer is still no and that's final! OK!" she retorted before storming out of Lana's room.
Later that night, Ava topped her stomach off with butter chicken (Lachlan made) and chocolate cake before going to bed. As she laid in bed, she began reminiscing about Harlan. She pondered the time she encountered Harlan at the dance club, to the time he originally ignored her in the lift. She let out a disappointed groan.
Even though Ava urgently needed a job. There was no she could work for Harlan f*****g Braxton. The man the city calls "Mr Cold-Blooded Billionaire Daddy."
