Chapter Six The greasy aroma of fried chicken mingled with the buttery scent of mashed potatoes greeted Jasper as he entered the mess hall. His stomach rumbled in response. Up at dawn to finish reviewing his notes before class, he’d missed breakfast. He scanned the room. Was Evelyn here? He hadn’t seen her in the two days since the party because she’d been tapped to make a ferrying run. Had she been able to find return transportation on an airliner or been stuck taking the long way home on a train? Sunlight glinted on the raven-black hair of a woman with her back to him. Ah.
